Everytime my friend sold his Sx phone, he'd be happy to get $50 while I was getting $300-$400 for mine.

He used to say android was so much better and I was like I think resale value proves its not.

Maybe Android was better for him and he didn't care about the low resale value of his phones?

I hope Apple is aggressive with the trade-in offers. This is a great opportunity to grab a new portion of the market for life. Once consumers switch to Apple products, they rarely switch back.

This program will only attract a subset of Android users ... the ones that bought an Android device because they were clueless or by accident. The hardcore Android users will remain - and there are a lot who are patently anti-Apple.

I agree. I'm not really sure who this program is supposed to be targeted at in first place. If their trade values are anywhere close to those of the Apple Recycle Program, it's a complete joke and pure convenience for those who are too lazy to put up an ad on ebay or other market places. I've sold my iPhone 5 for $400 (Apple offered me generous $85 online) and my partners iPhone 5S for $550 (or $175 from Apple....) last month - and a 2010 27" iMac for $900 ($300 from Apple) (all mixed up Canadian and US dollars, but it's close enough to get the idea).

I'm sure I'm missing something as these programs are being continued and could be somewhat successful, maybe the $22666 Apple Watch customers are the target group of this whole thing :D ....

(And I don't have an issue with Apple's obscure evaluation formulas, I'm just curious about their processes that determine these amounts)

I would consider this offer only if there was a 5'' screen iPhone. 4.7 is too small and 5.5'' is too big. If it wasn't for the bulky touch ID then the bezels would have allowed a bigger screen and retained a small size.

On average the high end androids are 200-300 less. So if he sold it for that much less whats the problem? You both spent about the same money using a phone for a while.

1) Other than the Android engineers switching the product from Blackberry-like to iPhone-like

This is incorrect FUD spread by Apple lovers. Google had two phone development platforms at the time iPhone announced. Once was Blackberry-esque, the other had a full touch screen.

2) Even if Apple did incorporate every Android feature, every year, so what? HTC, Samsung, Sony all release Android-based phones. Amazon forked the entire OS! Android is open source.

You can still patent a feature even if your implementation of it is open source.

How so? I spent $99 for my 64GB i6. He spent the same for his Sx

Well this is good news for those on other platforms who want to switch.

Maybe they should switch to the 6S for the rumoured force touch. Another thing that's been available on android for years. Just saying.

Most of Apple's highly touted features made their debut on Android and Samsung devices first. We iOS users owe quite a lot to Google and Samsung.

Yeah, god knows Apple would never have been able to come up with copy-and-paste on their own! Thank goodness Samsung and Google are there to blaze the trail for us.

You didn't spend 99$ you spend 99$+ a monthly fee for x years.

You have to look at prices without fixed contracts and usually android/WM high end are around 2-400 cheaper. If the price difference stays the same, both phones depreciate at the same rate. Aka you paid the same amount to use the phone. The logic remains the same, an iphone is then not more expensive to use then another high end phone.

If you would have used it both for 4 years or until it failed (which is on avg around the same time ) then yes there probably would be some difference in price.

Funny, those things that "supposedly" came to Android first; most were already present on desktops, laptops and other mobile OS and even IOS jailbreaks (which had took them from those other sources) prior to hitting Android.

An example, widgets are not a new concept on the desktop, Macs had them in 2005, went into Android in 2009 through the fact they pilfered that little thing called Java which was already doing it.

When they are initially sold, the difference between say a S6 (or S5) and an Iphone of the same config is pretty slim. Though Samsung phones tend to slip in price during the year (unlike Iphones) which makes comparing them pretty hard.

If you buy a S6 when it comes out, there's a good chance you'll be hit with a bigger absolute depreciation when you sell it than an Iphone. If you buy it after 6+ month, the absolute depreciation of the Iphone versus Samsung will probably be close; but the ending value for the Samsung phone will be lower 2 year from release (because the Iphone didn't have its sales price slashed during the fist year of sale).

Your post a very shortsighted to be honest. Just because someone buys a cheap phone doesn't mean they can't afford a better and more pricer phone.

might be a shock to you , but for some people it's just a simple tool, they will not spend even more on premium appple device. They buy a cheap phone for a reason! Don't pretent these people will suddenly see the light and buy a very expansive iPhone.

I know people who bought Moto Gs for that reason. They just wanted a cheap reasonable smartphone which does the job and the moto g suits them fine.

If there were no decent cheap phones, chances are they'd just stick with 'dumb/feature' phones since they don't think the higher end devices are worth it (in some ways they'd prefer it as well e.g. a battery that last most of the week).

I own a Nexus 4 and it does a solid job for what I need it to do. It cost me $249 brand new from Google and i've had it more than 2 years. I see no need to trade in a phone that will probably be worth $50 so I can buy a $600 phone, not gonna happen. I use my smartphone for 3 primary reasons. Phone calls, Google maps and blocking spam calls. I usely keep my phone until the battery starts to show it's age which is around 3-4 years. I also have the money to spend but chose not to so there is no lure for me in the Apple offer.

I'm not anti apple

But have little use for an iphone. Not when one without a plan costs 700 or more euros. I don't need a plan.

I get a sim card free from my internet provider. It has limited monthly hours for the phone, but enough for me cause I don't use it for business, etc. Comes with 50mb a month of data. But I use the data mostly at home and that's unlimited and free.

Found a moto g 4g for 180 euros 'unlocked' on amazon.fr I think they are less now. Mine came with a 30 euro rebate, but I have yet to see that money from Motorola.

For my purposes it works fine. If Apple sold an iphone in similar price category I'd probably buy one. This motorola is my first android anything. It really works. Honest.

When I was in the US a few months back I bought a sim card, popped it into the moto g and it worked fine. Again, for what my needs are.

I use apple computers. Will maybe one day get an ipad. But at current prices, no chance I'll ever have an iphone unless I need to get a data/phone plan and the cost is minimal for the phone.

Just checked the apple store here in france. The iphone 6 with only 16gb of storage starts at 709 euros unlocked. A whopping 919 euros for a phone with 128gb. Sorry. Ain't never gonna happen. A phone for near a thousand bucks.

And lately, I'm thinking to buy a new 30 euro phone, one of the old folding style thingies to have something small and light to take with me when I go cycling. A phone. Just a phone. I don't need a computer with me 24/7...

Users would rather spend and have a laugh at Android users only paying $99 over 2 year contact, then pay the phone outright (which works out to be about the same anyway) and not owe anything on the phone ?

Strange bunch of people :D

Apple still has the best camera *according to Tim*, but any company would say "there the best"

So,,, i'll just leave it at that.

My wife gave me a voucher for a free iPhone 6 for my birthday...I have the 4S 64GB. I keep asking myself why I want to plunk down $400 for a new 128GB model (I need more than 64GB especially if I am going to keep it for many years) when as far as I am concerned, the only improvement is the camera. Sure, the newer iPhones are slightly larger but I'm not watching movies/youtube nor crying for screen real estate. I really use my iPhone for (in no particular order) a)phone b)email c)pix d)quick web surf and e)texting.

If I buy the 6 I would still have this awesome 4S that is worth nothing on the street and nothing via Apple. The 4S would instantly be diminished to an MP3 player (which is ok) because I would likely port all my mail and apps to the iPhone 6.

I'm also petrified of buying now (and locking in a 2year contract) and then 6 months from now Apple releasing the next iPhone with something really innovative (that I could/would use) and I'm SOL.

If Apple/retailers offer some kind of $100 off the 128GB model within the next few weeks, that would probably get me to buy...otherwise I think I'm going to wait until October.

For me, the big jump from the 4S is Touch ID. Having that on my iPhone 6 makes using 1Password much easier, which has really improved my login experience. Passwords use to be the bane of my internet existence, but now that I use 1Password it's no problem at all to use very secure passwords everywhere it matters, and that's only possible on iOS with Touch ID.

Mmm nope, pretty sure I got that right the first time.

Can you list some of them?

Well here's something to consider. Myself (and I know several others) don't take resale value into consideration when buying a phone. I buy the phone that will work best for me. Not based on what updates might happen to the OS - but what the phone does then and there at time of purchase. So OS updates are welcome, but not a requirement for me. And after 2 years of use, I have gotten my value out of the phone and if I am ready to get a new one, anything I get for my old phone is "gravy."

This is true of my Android and iOS devices.

Sir, please don't speak up for people you don't know. And now you suddenly changed your words? Before you just said people buy cheap phones because they couldn't afford a more premium phone. Now you say they buy cheap because they just see them as a simple tool. Yep, change the argument when you see you're not winning. All good. Thanks. :p

Apple is going to grab more marketshare by selling devices to people who cannot afford them?

Did you forget you wrote this? Now you're suddenly changing your defense to people buying cheap because they don't see a need for a premium phone?

They really don't need to do this. Companies that do this type of thing are typically playing catchup.

I got my iPhone 6 at Target and was able to get $80 for my Note II for trade-in to put towards it. This makes sense from a business perspective because if retailers are doing it, why isn't Apple? I would think Apple would get better margins if they're selling their phones in their retail stores as opposed to having other stores selling them.

Not taking OS updates and trade-in value into consideration is pretty myopic.

If I had to pay for the device in full, I would definitely have to reevaluate what phone I bought. However, give that phones are subsidized in the U.S., I'd be foolish not to spend a bit more and get the exact phone I want as the contract will cost the same whether I get a cheap Android or a top of the line iPhone/Android phone.

The Moto G definitely has a lot of bang for the buck, so you didn't go wrong there having to buy it outright.

May be... but Samsung's execution of said features was poor at best. If you argue that point, I know you never owned the original galaxy S (Samsung Fascinate on Verizon). That phone is the sole reason that I switched to Apple.

I like new technologies. But I don't like them when they don't work. I'll take the refinement on existing technologies that Apple adds over the poor execution of "new" technologies that Samsung produces.

I can get not caring about resale value, but it always surprises me when people say they don't consider possible updates.

You're not alone obviously, most people are clueless about these things, but for people in the know it's pretty surprising they pick their phones without caring if they'll be supported in a timely manner.
