In one simple move, Apple has masterfully de-fanged the hordes of astroturfers and keyboard warriors. It's no wonder they are as successful as they are.

One simple move. Apple acknowledge they are purposely slowing down iPhone and will charge you 25 dollars to solve problems. Loom at this extra profits.

Well... I am looking down my 2 years old Android phone, I am all happy

Of course it’s up to Apple to make that choice. That’s why Enginering is. Choosing. They choose a battery size that’s a trade off between longevity and weight and thickness. They choose a screen resolution that’s a trade off. They choose how many speakers to put in and how big to make them. They choose what buttons to put on the device. They choose a clock rate for the cpu.

They don't inform us of their choices when they advertise and tell us about these devices in their keynotes.

I don't remember Phil on stage saying hey, this bionic CPU is awesome, we hope you love it so much you use it all the time and have to keep charging it, and when you do, iOS will automatically make the CPU less awesome!

It makes no sense whatsoever.

you can also not downgrade to ios10. i have noticed my 6 is much slower since the upgrade.
I found Tim and the current apple is as hypercritical as they can get. I really want to tell him that he is a jerk in person.

But that is ********. My iPhone 6 plus is nearly brand new. Its battery is on 79 of 500 cycles. Still the performance is REALLY piss poor with the iOS 11 update. So Apple should stop the lies about "phones with old batteries". This is obviously them wanting me to buy a new iPhone.
No it’s not. You loaded your phone up with crap and misconfigured it. I have the diagnostic right here.

Warranty is not the only document regulating device replacements. There are laws like Lemon Law. Those apply beyond the warranty. And perhaps Apple should be forced to recall these lemon phones.
LOL! They aren't lemon phones. It's a standard battery doing standard things.

Agreed; My 6 has been working just fine...Not so much concerned about the battery. installed 11 os clean installed...Phone doesn't support basic functions; find a contact, create an email, create a text, select voicemail, dial a number. Completely crapped 11 OS. Apple is blaming battery? Never before have they done this. This is a complete SHAM and SCAM on lazy software coding to drive sales...We can't even trade our phones in now with any value...Apple has screwed the entire Apple EcoSystem...Lazy over compensated, overly policitical and don't have their focus on the ball. Steve is turning in his grave and would fire all of them. what does it matter that Apple has 200B in the bank if they screw over their customers?
Did you not read what Apple wrote? Initially they thought the slower performance was due to software upgrades and bugs. They’re saying they now believe batteries could also be a contributing factor. Before this letter people were complaining that Apple was engaged in planned obsolecense and wasn’t alerting them that their battery might need to be replaced. Now people are claiming Apple is falsely blaming the problem on the battery to drive battery sales. Make up your mind would ya?

They don’t tell you MOST of the choices they make. The way they handle battery management is not something they’ve ever talked about.

Are people not aware that batteries degrade overtime? Apple tries to implement a "fix" to INCREASE usage of your personal device and somehow people interpret it as Apple being devious.

What seems to be the chief complaint in most of these posts, is Apple's failure to be transparent on the issue(which i agree with). With all of what the iphone is capable of, we have to assume there is a considerable amount of strain on the battery.

I wonder how much of Apple's obsession with making things thinner coupled with increased features play into the batteries longevity.

you clearly have no idea what you are talking about!

I know someone with an iPhone 6 and after < 800 battery cycles the battery is now unusable. I shopped around for third-party battery replacement services and they cost as little as 15% the price that Apple charges over here in Brazil (yes, that's 85% less). Problem is you can't source an original battery from Apple, so you just run the risk of getting a bad quality unit that gets stuffed after a couple of months, or catches fire/explodes and kills you.

Given the price Apple used to charge for battery replacement, it makes little sense to perform a repair that amounts to slightly less than half the price you can sell the device for (again I'm talking about my local situation, have no idea how much you can sell a 6 in the US versus the $79 price).

So yeah, the reduction to $29 is very welcome but in my opinion should be a permanent move. If it eats into their margins, then why not allow third-party services to source the original parts and let them charge less for labor so the customer has a proper choice that doesn't endanger their equipment/health.

Additionally, and I know you can't really compare the two situations, but my late-2013 15" retina MacBook Pro has 1000+ cycles on its battery and it's holding up quite nicely. No throttling that I can notice, and while the battery obviously doesn't last as long as a new one, it lasts surprisingly long. Not bad for 4-year old technology (surely batteries should have evolved, not devolved, since then). I have to assume the battery on this MBP had certain technologies/build features that maybe meant a 5 or 10% reduction in battery density, which they didn't employ on the newer models because it would have meant a fraction of a mm extra thickness on the iPhone. Not sure about everyone but I would gladly accept the tradeoff.

You mean, until they got caught with their pants down?

They DO tell us about SPEED, SPEED and MORE SPEED, about how much FASTER their devices are as compared to their competition, only, they don't tell us by using these devices we will make them slower.

You are right and we make a purchase by deciding if we like the overall package of compromises. As consumers we were not party to the information that within a year Apple could slow down our devices. Our buying decisions may have been different if we did.

Let me fix that, not a big deal for you ;) big enough for apple to make some drastic actions to correct this....

This is more about brand perception more than anything else.

All other phone manufacturer's are probably having meetings on how to address the battery "issue" before someone can put their own spin on it and not go through what apple is going through.

Hey X brand you sell phones with battery's that aren't replaceable and only promise OS updates for up to 2 years. Why the 2 years? What happens after 2 years?

Still faster than the competition. They never promised you a clock rate.

And how do you prove you got a lemon battery in your phone?

NO! It has NEVER been a standard that as your battery degrades your performance degrades. This is NEW concept. That is a big part of why people are very steamed. The expectation has been that as your battery degrades, you ability to operate not plugged into the wall is LESS.
