Why should you get a free battery for out of warranty replacement? Batteries do degrade over time.
Would you say the same if iPhones started shutting down in one month? The same logic would apply. Yes battery degrades but apparently in some phone (those with skimped batteries) they degrade faster than in other devices. Having skimped on the battery size in a first place Apple should compensate now by providing free replacements.

I will take my 6s Plus too. It has 656 cycles with 79-81% life. I love this iPhone. It has been perfect.
You’ve treated it better than I have apparently. 531 cycles, <55% health 22 mos. old. Plaudits to you though; and I agree it is a great phone, mine has served me well. My new battery is on my doorstep, I’ll be replacing it myself, wish me luck everybody!

Totally unnecessary on Apple's part, but another example of their unique dedication to customer experience and customer satisfaction. Apple is an amazing company.
After reading the pages and pages of battery complaint threads it finally dawned on me that my original iPad Pro’s battery has been discharging “quickly.” :) (No performance issues.) When I checked my AppleCare coverage and saw it expires on January 10 (the 2 year mark) I decided to take my iPP to my local Apple service provider. It took all of 10 minutes for them to run the battery diagnostic and prepare it to ship off to Apple. I will get a replacement iPP. Personally, I think Apple’s customer service is superb.

Thanks to the negative media coverage, Apple have been forced to react.

Had this all never blown up, Apple would have never have offered this.

Don't mistake this for good customer service, this has forced Apple's hand.

May this be a lesson to Apple: be more transparent in the future, rather than denial.

Please quote me the example.

And we are talking about Apple. I love how Apple fans will drag other OEMs when there is a problem with Apple. Now all the sudden Apple is equal to Android OEMs. When the news is positive, Apple fan will trush Android. So much double standard

Google is your friend.

In one simple move, Apple has masterfully de-fanged the hordes of astroturfers and keyboard warriors. It's no wonder they are as successful as they are.

I respect this response by Apple but man did they mess up to begin with. Think about how many consumers bought a new iPhone when in reality a new battery would have been the right call for them instead, saving a ton of money in the process.
Class action lawsuits (about this exact matter) will surely go ahead so the customers may get compensated for this skrew-up.

Only solves part of the problem. For years Apple have sold phones to people who thought their old phone was dying and that they needed to get a new one, when really all they needed was a battery. I think they should address that issue.
No, this has only gone on for a few months when they added throttling.

Exactly, I bought the iPhone X for the same reason!

No there is maybe nothing wrong. But it is wrong to produce and market them, if they can’t be pushed by current battery tech for long time.

Why can't they be pushed by current battery tech? Is there any evidence of this besides Apple's official excuse?

When did they deny?

The upgrade to iOS11 on my 6S/128gb took by far the longest time that I've ever experienced (been iPhone user since iOS4) - I always thought it was strictly due to the amount of apps/storage (839 apps - I know, don't ask - 17gb capacity avail.) but obviously this power management "feature" definitely had something to do with it. Throughout the entire upgrade, the iPhone was unusable - would literally take seconds just to swipe from one home screen to next one.

I was very critical of Apple, but this is a step in the right direction and should be welcomed. Obviously it will depend on the criteria they set for the battery replacement. It will also be interesting to see the battery information they will show (after removing the ability of excellent apps like Battery Health to give you battery info). Lets hope they also give you the choice in iOS between speed and battery life. And as an interim measure (whilst aiming to improve battery quality in future models), please give us plus sized battery cases!

So this year Apple messed up a bit but went on to fix the problems
- iTunes - removed iOS App management, but then brought out 12.6.3.6
- Airport, seemed support was no more, but KRACK fix came (eventually)
- The battery and speed issue, now this press release

Like many people who complain, I want a company to make products I want to buy. Innovation and support will get me to buy more Apple products. Not supporting older products, poor build quality, poor software or intentionally slowing down devices will make me stick with what I have and look elsewhere for products and services.

So overall (even with iOS11, which is getting better), I am feeling happier with Apple.

No, source. But, my launch day iPhone 7+ is one year old. Ok, 15 months. Apple has released 11.2 OS, with throttles to protect iPhone 7s & 7+s. Thus, Apple feels that these phones could crashing due to chemically worn batteries in as little as 15 months.
Don’t know why they added the code for iPhone 7 but I’d need to see legitimate cases of 7 or 7+ users needing to replace their battery after a year.

booked a genius bar reservation tomorrow for the battery change, guess I'll just......cancel......it......

This whole issue was only ever a communication and perception issue because slowing the CPU a bit is always preferable to a sudden shutdown.

So this response from Apple is fantastic, although I suspect the 3rd party battery suppliers and installers might not agree! At $29 it makes no sense to go anywhere other than Apple for a new battery, at least while this offer lasts.

Added to that, they are going to improve transparency via the iOS update.

Moaners will still moan, haters will still hate but everyone else will win. Apple will need to spend a few dollars to subsidise the battery discount but dollars are something they have in abundance. Gotta keep the “customer sat” needle at 100%! :p

Incoming shills to defend daddy Apple.

Anyone who has used the latest iPod touch knows how skeevy and deceptive Apple is. They claim the battery lasts 9(?) hours but it’s closer to 3.

There is nothing to defend or admire here, especially since it’s just for “all of 2018”. Then it’s back to thier greedy ways.

I understand a company is based on money, but there are lines of respect toward the consumer/costumer that should not be crossed.

Android: "We don't support our products long enough to give our customers software updates"

Google will push out Android updates but its up to the phone manufacturer to offer upgrades. Its not "Android", as you imply "speaking".

In any case, WTF has this story got to do with Android, its about Apple offering discounted battery replacement cost.
