this move by Apple is actually pretty smart. Not because the perception is that they care for their customer, but dropping the battery replacement price will increase the quantity of batteries sold exponentially. I’m sure they have gone back to their battery suppliers and squeezed them for the best price possible based on projected forcasts. They will actually make money on this even though they dropped price to 29$. They also believe these same customers will buy the new iPhone next September. Yes that’s right, can you imagine that? Maybe not as many as they previously forecasted due to lawsuit but they will get the double dip from a lot of customers. They may even build their new iPhone promotional strategy to include a better trade in price for those who replaced the battery. Alot of options for them. Of course they will need this revenue to offset the billions they may have to fork over to settle the lawsuit.

Even with one of the biggest lawsuits in history pending, I’m sure Apple will be fine.

Apple will lose money with each battery replaced once you add the cost, labor, and overhead. Probably to a tune of $10 per battery. Making a profit off the shenanigans will only fortify the image that apple is a greedy company. Double dipping sounds great for a shareholder, but to main street, Apple is slowly becoming Microsoft.

And if they're losing money on it, then they already know it's not going to be a large amount. This is no different than the free bumpers for the iPhone 4. It gets hyped up online, but the actual demand for the "fix" is ultimately negligible in terms of cost for Apple...because it's not really a problem for the vast majority of customers.

I am with Piggie in this case. He used the phrasing "deeply investigated". No consumer should be expected to understand the technicality beyond a reasonable expectation.
Fair enough. I suppose events like this will make me be a choosier consumer; actually it all makes me want to be LESS of a consumer

And now the battery is available - Apple now says cheaper iPhone replacement battery available immediately - but -
Discounted replacement batteries for iPhones will be available now, Apple Inc. said Saturday, rather than beginning in late January, as initially announced two days ago.

A company spokeswoman cautioned that initial supplies of some replacement batteries may be limited.

how’s that for an admission of guilt

Some will call it customer service

A first step in the right direction anyways

Now back to the drawing boards

“We expected to need more time to be ready, but we are happy to offer our customers the lower pricing right away,”

More time for what ? Change the price on their system for the replacement ?

It PR bs , that is all. Nothing has changed , Apple has to do a test still which most units will pass anyway ..... most people don't realise this and think apple is taking action by offering battery replacement.... nope.

Actually no.

For a batter to be replaced, the handset must fail the battery test, many people complaining about this issue were rejected by Apple for a replacement , cause thier test said the battery did not need replacement .

So it's a genius move , PR wise saying they are reducing the cost, when in fact they control the approval mechanism ..... they might as well say free..... which they will not cause lots of people will turn up, to be rejected and that will highlight the fact they have to approve the change.

Had the customer been given the choice to make the replacement , this would be a nice gesture.

All Apple is doing right now is protecting thier sales of 8 and X, they want the customer to trust them.

The sad fact, they are not addressing the issue of the software , and are still not replacing batteries as their test seems to be designed to say batteries are over 80%..... cause under 80% and less than 500 cycles , they owe you a free battery .

This whole thing is a mess..... sorry but I do not trust their battery test from personal
Experience where my replacement 5S had about 40% more battery, and thier tests said my battery was fine

Tim COOK MUST GO. How many times do I have to say it?

I mean, I've been around a long time. Apple has impressed me as a Company so much that they have been my #1 company for customer experience since 2007. Tim Cook is like the wart on the nose of that experience, and NOW THIS! Inexcusable. And in the world of Corporate Business, this kind of betrayal and bone-headed move MUST have ONE solution— The man at the top resigns or is FIRED.

Now, get on with it Apple. Kick his degrading arse out.

Something tells me somehow their diagnostics will magically Show different results

Otherwise it would as well be suicide; pr wise

They need to change it and they know it

If they are smart , yeah, your phone that passed the test last week will return with "sir , your battery needs replacing, we have a great discount right now..... "

I will try it

Let’s all try it and post our experiences right here on MacRumors

.

LOL, I think you need to get a vote on the shareholder appointed board to do that, and convince your fellow members that he needs to go despite profit forecasts and actual results looking excellent.

That's because Apple's diagnostics can read the actual iOS device's processor clock frequency, etc. The benchmark apps in the App store most likely cannot, and are thus displaying inaccurate or bogus results.

CPUdasherX reports the CPU clock just fine. It would have been of apple’s best interest to pull from App Store if it was bogus.

That's just a silly argument. What do profits have to do with being a proper leader of anything? Can you think of a few "Highly profitable" organizations and people who are doing time because of their other actions? Even Hitler took Germany from begging for a potato to the world's biggest financial juggernaut at the time.

Try again, and starting your statement with that pathetic "Lol" gives you away immediately.

Time it takes to replace battery x * hourly rate of employee(minimum wage $11?) + cost of battery(not including shippIng and handling, storage fees) + cost of location/electricity/utilities/non related battery replacement costs = a lot more than $29 lol.

Or order the battery replacement kit for around $20(?), take 30 minutes or an hour+ out of your day to watch some YouTube videos or read fixits write up and attempt to do it yourself.

Or spend a couple hundred to a thousand more for the android equivalent to whatever iPhone you have an issue with and then... good luck getting this type of customer service when some strange behavior starts to happen with your “old” android.

HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Wow, so it is true. Performance degrades in lock-step in relation to battery life. This indicates a hardware problem that Apple is trying to bury fast! The battery replacement is just a cover-up to distract people from the real issue.

Bingo!

More time for what ? Change the price on their system for the replacement ?

Or to get their battery tester ready, since their test determine who gets batteries and who doesn't?
