iDisk has not been "slow" at all in more than 3 years.

If your connection is slow, is doesn't automatically get faster when using an Apple service.

iDisk is notoriously slow from outside the US. I notice you are not from outside the US, so it is possible you are unaware of this.

Not only iDisk is unbearably slow outside the US but the mail service as well. In my experience .mac mail was always considerably slower compared to gmail. And on many many many occasions I could forget about updating my web page or blog with iWeb when I was traveling. I really tried to like it but found it utterly useless for my needs. :(

MobileMe Login Changes

I'd like to point out there's been a slight change to the MobileMe login screen. Recently whenever I put in my login name, it adds @me.com to the end. This also suggests that there'll be a login for other domains (and apple ids) as well.

best news ever. if mobile me was free i'd be super happy. aint going to happen though!

I hope they will offer free services outside US, fingers crossed then..

I like the concept of MobileMe, I used the free trial once. I refuse to use this product though, until they fix it. In this day, it simply isn't acceptable to sending personal data over the internet unencrypted and in plain text. Just seems like a real bad idea. MobileMe encrypts your login to the service, but that's it. All the data syncing is completely out in the open.

If they wanted to implement this correctly, ALL traffic to/from this service should be encrypted. The day they do that, is the day they gain my subscription.

One such example: DropBox. Unlike the mobile me disk, you can sync with a mac, linux or windows PC. You can revert files, you can publicly share files, etc.

iDisk is nothing more than webdav and it works with Windows and Linux and you can share files even with non-MM people. The one thing Dropbox does have that is missing in iDisk is the revisions.

In many ways free mobileme makes alot of sense in the iOS vs Android war. From what people tell me you need a google account to activate your android handset that handles contacts and events and such for you straight off the bat. Making some minium features, contacts, email, events, ect. free gives apple a leg up over their competition. I'd also hope they have 2Gb storage for free but I'd hope they went for 10Gb free so I don't have to scrounge around for drop box referals.

Those who say that iDisk is unreliable outisde the US would the data centre improve this?

Just thought I would point out that my step dad went to get an iPad the other week. They set him up with a gmail email instore to activate his iPad as he didn't have a iTunes account already and his old email wouldn't work with the mail app. Makes more sense to put people on your own email line rather than an third party that you are already in competition with...

Oh and a shameless dropbox referal plug :p

I think it will going to be a good thing if they will allow some form of free synchronization of contacts and calendar entries between iOS and the MAC and I think the current infrastructure of MobileMe can provide this.

I currently pay for MobileMe and use all it's features.

Yet that said, I find it woefully overpriced. If not free, Apple could cut down the price by half, and still make a nice profit. At the current MSRP it leaves a bad impression and reinforces the fact that there is an Apple Tax Premium. Fanboys will deny it till their final breath, but it's very real. What a racket.

What are you talking about? If you pay full price it works out to $8.25 a month or so. If you get it discounted on eBay, if will end up costing you less than $5.00 a month.

Ya, that's really a ripoff! The greedy slime balls!

There seems to be a lot of misinformation out there. Mobile synch is indeed encrypted and not sent plain text. http://support.apple.com/kb/ts1629. If you scroll down that page you will see that it uses port 443 for sync and iDisk and so forth.

I think it would a good idea if Apple will implement this type of free service as in the long run they can attract potential power users who may want to try free service at first then may opt to sign for a much more enhanced paid version depending on their needs. You can implement some of the feature of the paid MobileMe services by using combination of free version of dropbox/zumodrive + goole mail, calendars and etc... and now you can edit google docs straight from your iPhone. I think cloud services will be much more important in the coming years as more and more people are frequently upgrading their gadget or moving into various platform. Having this type of services somehow augments Apple's ability to aid users in migrating their data on their new device whether it was a mac (migration assistant/time machine) or iOS (MobileMe).

I still say it is more important to be able to gather information from the people who are using a free service, than it is to get revenue from people who are using the service.

The information is far more important than the monies you'd get from charging subscriptions.

Less than that even. $3.58/mo on Amazon right now. .58 more than a loaf of wheat bread. Worth every cent to sync iCal and Contacts to all my computers and iDevices + find my iPhone/Instant wipe without wasting time cobbling a collection of 3rd party services together.

I don't like the idea of paying for what amounts to a monthly insurance premium for find my iPhone. It would be nice if Apple charged on a per use basis. I don't know how many people use Mobile Me with iPhones, but surely Apple could make more money if every single iPhone user could use the service at $5.00 an instance when they need it.

Give away Mobile Me for free with limited storage, then charge for tiered storage solutions and Find My iPhone. I would fully assume the free version would include ads - and I find that to be 100% acceptable.

If the only thing you are going to use is "find your phone", then it probably isn't worth it.

Totally agree - lots of people want the Find my Phone and Remote wipe and don't need other services (already have them elsewhere). So the current full tarrif for mobile me not only stops iphone users from signing up but also can be the the deal breaker when considering whether to switch to Apple.

Yeah but at $5/ month your nearly paying the amazon or ebay price. So why not just get the whole suite?

What a stupid thing to say. It has been slow over the 2 years i've used it and has never improved at all. My internet is far from slow. The problem is on Apples end

I have no use for MobileMe, maybe not even for free.

DropBox for work files - the 2GB free is more than enough and dead simple to use.
Sync contacts and calendar when i connect my iPhone to the iMac is OK for me.
I cannot use the @me.com for business - any of the @gmail, @hotmail, @me etc. looks flakey in this specific context.

I still have no way to sync the emails I send from my iPhone to my iMac (no exchange server).
After 20 minutes at the Apple store looking for a real solution I was offered the free MobileMe trial and declined.

I would consider free MobileMe to have the find my phone and the remote wipe capability.

I won't be surprised if the only 'free' thing they offered was mail, I would be surprised if they offered 'find my iphone' for free because that would be a nice little entice for people to pay the extra cash, although i'm always surprised by what apple offer when they announce things, so what do i know

I can believe they might offer Find-a-phone feature for free, although I know some people that bought Mobile Me just for that feature.

Could free MobileMe only be available in iAd countries?

Apple may look to that as a revenue model. iAd supported MobileMe. iAd is coming to Japan and Europe soon.

I completely agree. It's the slowest cloud storage product I've ever used. It's unusable compared to Dropbox or Amazon's S3 service with JungleDisk.

The Mac press (including Macworld magazine) have lambasted it for years.
