I tried logging into mobileme just for fun with my AppleID. While it didn't let me log in, it did show that my account was expired. I have never used mobile me in my life. When I put in a totally hogwash Username that no one would ever choose, it said something to the effect of please put in a real username. Could it be just because Apple hasn't activated those services yet but has put all of the AppleIDs on? Maybe, maybe not. You be the judge.

I'd say sign up now for the 60d trial so you can reserve a good username before a flood of users sign up! I think it holds your username for you even if the trial expires and you dont renew

That is a good idea.
I just went to sing up and Apple wants me to enter all my address and credit card info.
I am too lazy to bother entering the info.
I get spoiled by easy to use apps like DropBox.

I've been using mobile me for free for the last two years via the free 60 day trials. Just can't seem to decide if I want to subscribe I guess
I think this is probably what Apple is trying to crack down on with the new alerts and limits on "free" accounts. I would be surprised if they started offering any part of MobileMe for free.

You are clueless to that value of MobileMe. Absolutely clueless.

Do you not think if there was a better option that could accomplish all of what it does, for less money, that people would use that instead?

Oh, and GMAIL!?!?! Give me a ****** break!

Sorry I don't like having my account hacked once a week and my contacts spammed. Push email? Push contacts? Push Calendars? Bookmarks? Notes? Dock Items?

What are those?

(And yet you pay for MobileMe. What a joke)

LMAO you call me clueless?

Never had any major downtime on gmail (gmails tiny amonut of downtime it has had overall is nothing in comparison to the complete ballsup Me had when it launched!) - been using it since day one. Always works for me and very snappy too. Care to share your pearls of wisdom as to why Gmail is so bad? Oh thats right...Steve doesnt like Google

My accounts never been hacked, and I dont get spam thanks to Google fantastic spam filter (there is no spam filter as reliable simply because of the mass-reporting system that ensures spam gets canned.

Oh also:
Push email - Gmail does that
Push contacts - does that too
Push calendars - yup...got it covered
Sync Bookmarks: There's an app for that

iDisk: Slow, tiny amount of storage
Me Mail (on iphone): Slow to retrieve & send
Calendar: Wouldnt load half the time
Gallery: Never really used as tbh its not something I would personally have a use for
Bookmarks: I use Xmarks - free

Until you've tried MobileMe outside the US you cant comment on its reliability. From the UK, its 100% pure crap. I'm on a 100mbps fibre connection in a low-usage area. Its not an issue on my end.

I used MobileMe for a year. You used gmail for a second (if you even bothered to sign up). Now, stop being a dick and backup your arguments. Till then, zip it.

More to come ?

Free later for what we have now ? Sure!
What else?

Why buy an Xserve if we can get the same services via a pay-per-service on clouded Xserves nested in North Carolina !

2 more cents ?

I am sure those of you in Europe do have issues. And I assume this is because there are no server farms storing your information on that side of the Atlantic. If I had to pull from a server in the UK every time I got an email, it would take forever on my end as well (probably longer). Anyway, I use both (mainly because I was one of the first people to get a Gmail account), but I have found that my MobileMe account works better on my iTouch than Gmail. I don't know why, it just does. I also use dropbox instead of iDisk because it just works better. I almost never have sync conflicts, which makes it worth the extra small fee per month. I think Apple should just buy dropbox and dump their iDisk.

My mate uses Googles services on his 3GS and I use MobileMe on my 3GS.

Mine works. Everyday. No Hassle. His doesn't.

The £35 I pay for it is worth every penny.

If you don't think it is, then that is your priority.

Mac Pro - MacBook Pro - iPhone sync'ed, Perfectly. Bookmarks, preferences, contacts, calendars. Lovely.

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 4_1 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/532.9 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/4.0.5 Mobile/8B117 Safari/6531.22.7)

Well as a loyal user of MobileMe I would hope that either I get a future discount or nothing is free. The moaners over the years could have paid for it and although I am being selfish, I don't think they should be rewarded for all their carping and keeping their ccs in their wallets!

Did your mate by any chance use the 'Google Mail' button on his iPhone when setting gmail up? Its got a huge flaw. Even google's own support site tells you not to use it.

Either way - mine works fine. Gmail on my iPhone is much faster than mobile me ever was. In fairness, it was about a year ago that I was using Me, so sure- speeds could have improved - but the general consensus from this thread is that overall, its still much slower. Your mate probably just has an incorrect setup, or is on a crappy 3g provider (lets face it, most of the UK ones are! :p)

Bye Bye MobileMe

MobileMe is an expensive rip off and I have canceled my renewal. I also only paid for it because of the FindMyiPhone and Wipe options but have found that paying $140+ per year for two iPhones is totally stupid.

With my Gmail account now able to live sync my contacts and calendars for Free and the ability to wipe my iPhone using my College Exchange, the only thing I am losing is FindMyiPhone.

As others have posted, I also do not have any problems with Gmail. All actions are instant using Gmail Exchange and are far far easier to use and manage through my Google Account then anything the far to expensive MobileMe offers. The Gmail filters are exceptional and keep my two accounts 99% free of garbage.

I have also researched and you can get a whooping 50 accounts for free using Google Apps or you can pay only $50 a year for the added remote wipe. This is far far less then anything Apple has offered. I will admit that if Apple wakes up and offers tiered pricing for a very reasonable amount, like $25 a year for FindMyiPhone and Wipe capabilities + $10 per each additional phone...then this is something I would pay for. In the meantime, it is an extremely overpriced, over-hyped, never used function.

Spot on. Someone buy this guy a beer :)

What kind of flaw?

Google has a different setup on its website for those who want to use Gmail through Exchange. Otherwise default configuration always worked fine for me, it even allows you to sync your notes.

I have always been a PC user until a few months ago. I bought a Mac Mini and have been using it 90% of the time now. I have had the 3G, 3GS and now, the iPhone 4. I plan on getting whatever new iPhone comes out next year. Why? Because it just works. Smooth, simple and unobtrusive.

I recently signed up for a free MobileMe trial because I liked the iDisk feature and all the syncing capabilities. I also signed up for Dropbox to give that a trial go as well.

So far - both have been simple. I really like how Apple keeps the interface neat and clean. Simplistic. Where as other applications such as Gmail and Google docs - it's a mess. I do use Gmail. I have not played with MobileMe mail yet though. I have use the calendar and like it a lot. Contacts is great too. I am not sure I will use Gallery though as I have Flickr.

I also just bought a MobileMe subscription from Amazon for $42.42. A whopping $3.50 a month. I pay $6.99 to GoDaddy for web hosting that I use maybe twice a year? Lol. So at $3.50 a month, it's pretty nice. Even if I don't use all the features.

Dropbox is nice too. I like the notifications and the ease of use. I won't buy it for $99 a year though. I prefer NOT to have my entire life in the hands of a startup right now. Even so, there are clauses in ALL online data storage sites that state they are not responsible for data loss.

All in all I am still in the testing phase right now. I will keep MobileMe because like all Apple products, it will change and get better - for the most part :)

Lastly, some people just don't like paying for things and think that FREE is always better. Not always the case. You can also never convince a person like that either. Gmail is a great service but it's messy and I still don't fully trust them. There have been too many issues and they're not in it for their customers, they're in it to make a profit. As for Gmail contact syncing? NO WAY! Gmail has the WORST contact system I have ever seen.

For those syncing iCal with Google calendars, aren't there limitations regarding multiple calendars? My understanding is that you can only sync one calendar with Google Calendar.

Likewise with Contacts, the fields in Address book do not correspond perfectly to the fields in Google contacts so there can be missing information in Google contacts.

I like mobileme because it guarantees that everything in my contacts and calendars is exactly the same, including categories and colors, on my iphone, macbook air, and imac.

I subscribe to MM simply for syncing calendars and address books across 2 iphones, a macbook, a macbook pro, an iPad, and 2 different accounts on an iMac. There are two humans in the loop here who already have their own gmail accounts, etc.

There is always someone jumping up to say that you can do this for free with some other service- typically Google.

I've tried. It isn't there yet. Syncing across this many devices has to be nothing less than perfect or you risk all sorts of data integrity issues.

The fact that these devices handle this and MM is the facilitator is a big selling point. It would be an even bigger selling point if the sync was free. Sort of a reward for staying in the Apple ecosystem with every phone, laptop, tablet and computer you own :)

+1, I think you were posted this as I was posting, but I couldn't agree more. I've got an address book that has been electronically managed since I bought my first PDA- a handspring visor circa 2000. It is important to me to not muck it up.

Syncing calendars is perfect for busy families. I wouldn't need it just for staying in sync with my desktop either.

$5 seems reasonable, better than $100 per year(I'm talking about MSRP) for things that are available for free on other sites... Hope at least email and Find My iPhone becomes free if it does.

I think it would be cool if we get iPhone to iPhone messaging built right in. I get it we have Whatsapp and what not. But a native app would be awesome!

My Google Apps system works so well for syncing up family calendars over push!

If Apple is going to tout MobileMe, they need to make their syncing better. I've used it for 15 months. The first 9 months worked absolutely flawless for all my machines, but the last 6 months have been nothing but headaches and flaws that even the Mobile Me techs could not correct. Been very disappointed in it lately and even had to take my PC out of the system because it was messing up the entire system with no remedy provided by the MM Help.

There's a major feature of MobileMe that is noticeably absent from the other free services: support. If you have a problem with MobileMe, you can contact Apple. Google will simply refer you to their support forums. This may not be an issue for the kind of people that post of MacRumors, but for the average user, this can be huge.
