I have been using these services since the free iTool's - the paid .Mac version and now the Me.com paid version... There has been steady improvement along the way... All of us have been very patient with Apple as they implement and play catch-up with others. These services are essential tools for business users and if Apple wants to play with the big boys then...

Having said all of that, I think :apple: Apple :apple: owe's me for all the testing thru the years... :D

I completely agree. It's the slowest cloud storage product I've ever used. It's unusable compared to Dropbox or Amazon's S3 service with JungleDisk.

The Mac press (including Macworld magazine) have lambasted it for years.

I am paid user of MobileMe and I find sad that iDisk is terrible in comparison to free DropBox. Not only it is unusably slow outside US but the fact that you can't (sym)link it to the folder makes it useless. Apple should simply buy DropBox.

Free "Find my iPhone" and over the air synching of calendars/contacts between my Mac and iPhone is at least I'm expecting from Apple these days (not to be better than others, but just to stay competitive).

Apple's Flim-Flam

This is probably all about the new apple multi-email address/calendars service. For existing MobileMe users, you can register up to (my guess is) 3 accounts for free, more if you want to pay.

I've been using MobileMe for the last 3 years. With a MacbookPro, 2 iPhones and now 2 iPads in the family it's great for keeping calendar, address book and bookmarks in sync. I use Dropbox over iDisk though.

Question about the amazon renewals: if I get one and renew now, does it extend a year from now, or from when my current one expires (mine currently expires in Feb 2011)?

Thanks,

Rick

Blah, blah, blah......I heard this before. I will believe it when it becomes reality. This is likely another setup for disappointment.

To me, it's very simple. When you buy an Apple device such as a phone or anything >$199 or $299 you automatically qualify for MobileMe service for 2-3 years. Something to that effect.....simple and inclusive.....

from when you current one expires. That's from my past experience.

The biggest thing I use Mobileme for is syncing my calendars/contacts. Sure, I can do that when I connect my phone but since I hardly do that cause I just plug it into the wall to charge it (since that doesn't require my computer to be on), it's nice to have my stuff synced without me having to actively remember to sync the two devices.

Find my phone is nice but really only works just if you lost your phone and you don't know where (the one time I used it I already suspected it was at a restaurant and all it did was confirm it was there and that no one had walked off with it yet. Which I confirmed by calling anyways so it just gave me a quicker way of checking. ANd yes, I got very lucky). Though I will admit it does give me a small sense of security, but I think it's more placebo than anything honestly.

I don't use the extra email (already have more than I need honestly). Don't really use the idisk feature much (cept as an extra place to backup my finance software, nice but I wouldn't pay for that), don't use the gallery *shrug*.

100% CPU usage
The last update unceremoniously wiped out Outlook's calendar completely. Gone! Many others experienced this.
You have no idea what you're talking about.

Do the following experiences have any credibility?

1.6.4 upgrade wiped out calender in Outlook

High CPU usage because of a bug in com.apple.dotmacsyncclient.exe

VERY high CPU usage for dotmacsync client

There are many other threads with different subject titles that deal with the calendar change, loss of sync, the switch to multiple calendars in Outlook, etc. Apple has NO SOLUTION to the 100% CPU problem after multiple product revs.

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 4_1 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/532.9 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/4.0.5 Mobile/8B117 Safari/6531.22.7)

Even my desktop with its i7 processor spins up to 100% when it syncs.

The way Apple puts a way lower priority over it's PC software is shameful, PC users make up the majority of it's iDevice users.

The only thing that makes me believe that this is untrue is the fact that is says "on this iPod touch." Whilst it is the only type of iPod that has access to this type of thing but I don't see them saying it like that. "On this iPod" seems like something they would say.

Rick, not sure about amazon, but Google (Gmail, Google Calendar and contacts) is free, does the same thing, all synced with my iPhone, works great. Google chrome keeps my bookmarks synced with all my computers, mac and pc alike. It's a very good quality solution.

iDisk is notoriously slow from outside the US. I notice you are not from outside the US, so it is possible you are unaware of this.

Not only iDisk is unbearably slow outside the US but the mail service as well. In my experience .mac mail was always considerably slower compared to gmail. And on many many many occasions I could forget about updating my web page or blog with iWeb when I was traveling. I really tried to like it but found it utterly useless for my needs. :(

Exactly. Apple have had more than enough time to improve it but many users are still frustrated with the service.

That'd be great if Apple did this. Find My iPhone should really be available to everyone.

Free email, sure.
People are crazy if they think Apple will make Find My iPhone available for free.

^ This.

I think the Find My iPhone is great, but I remember the years of switching between cell phones on the same carrier (Nokia to Samsung Blackjack to Motorola Razr to Motorola Q, etc.) and always losing at least *some* if not *all* contacts. It was so bad, the only way to be absolutely certain was to keep a physical hand-written/typed list and update the new phone manually. Time consuming Pain in the A$$!!!

The very fact that I can sync my calendars to iTunes AND keep all my iDevices synced and current in the cloud is cheap insurance to me. The other features are all just gravy! I don't use iDisk or mail, but I do use Gallery some and calendar syncing, etc.

FWIW

I'd say sign up now for the 60d trial so you can reserve a good username before a flood of users sign up! I think it holds your username for you even if the trial expires and you dont renew

thanks good idea, i took your advice!

I like Find my Phone too. My wife and I use it a lot when one of us is out and about.

I wonder how many people have been "found out" by Find my iPhone. I suspect there are quite a few couples where one partner doesn't know about it.
