I’m so confused by the title and the content of this article. It makes it sound like third-party apps are not going to be in the Apple TV anymore.
No where does it say that. It says the Apple provided apps for renting and purchasing TV shows is being removed because the features are mostly integrated in the Apple TV app. This has been the plan for years but it is surprising it took this long to finish the integration.

The :apple:TV app is such a mess. I have no idea where to look

What's the bigger mess is that Apple doesn't seem to notice!

Really dumb how they sabotaged their own Apple TV product in several ways with perfect timing to ruin things.

1. Made it so you can no longer use the remote control to tilt and steer driving games.

2. Made it so you'd have to duct tape a freaking air tag to the remote to use "Find My" ( I guess they fixed that recently)

3. Did not take a look at what Netflix was doing.

4. Made a few cool shows and then practically forgot about them.

5. Sold me my Bugs Bunny Looney Tunes videos and then changed the content according to Wokeness ( at least I think they did that to me). Beware if you buy content - it might get edited out and you paid for something else!

6 - I can probably go on and on.

The movie and TV show sections from the iTunes Store app on iPhones and iPads will also be eliminated.
So this basically means purchasing movie and TV show content on iTunes Store is no longer an option. I just don’t see any option in Apple TV app that I can purchase any content.

Omg for real? This is horrible news to me. I didn’t buy the other “updated” content they pushed over.

Time to go back to DVD and BD while it lasts. At least they cannot change the content pressed on physical media remotely.

then they better overhaul the amount of details the tv app gives otherwise people are gonna be really pissed. for example, currently in the tv app there’s no way to know what version of a movie you have. even if you own the HD version it still shows that you own the 4k version. the only way to find out what you actually own is the itunes app.

TV is the worst thing Apple makes. It's glitchy, inconsistent, confusing, and just doesn't work most of the time I try it. Old units, new units, doesn't matter, they're all irritating to use.

My $40 Roku has been utterly flawless, still allows me to AirPlay (and Android friends can cast), and oh yeah it's $40.

The only app that I haven't been able to get to work right on said Roku is, surprise surprise, the Apple TV app. No sound when attempting to play movies. Never been able to get it to work.
That's bizarre. Apple TV's app works great for me, on my three generations of AppleTV, my Apple Devices, and my LG TV.

When you own a show, they automatically upgrade it for free to the best version. For example, when Babylon 5 came out in HD, the versions I purchased before was upgraded without me doing anything.

We cut cable back in 2010 and started with a Roku box. Since then, we've used several different devices from Roku, Chromecast, Amazon Fire Stick, and Apple TV. Currently have Apple TV (2nd gen) in the living room, Fire Stick in the bedroom, and Roku stick in the basement.

Honestly, my $40 Roku stick does everything that I need, at 1/3rd the cost. 4K video, HDR, Dolby Vision. And I'd say the overall user experience is just as good if not better. Apple TV does have nicer looking menus.

But I am at loss to define what exceptional value I received for paying the Apple premium. Integration with HomePods sucks ass, it continually breaks and I have to reset it every 4-8 weeks. All of the streaming apps that I have with ATV I have with Roku. Roku is smaller and cheaper so I can easily take it on trips and if anything happens with it, no big deal. Well, it doesn't have an Ethernet connection, but I have no buffering with it on Wifi so it's a moot point. No Dolby Atmos (need to get Roku Ultra for that) but it still sounds better with my old Yamaha soundbar and subwoofer than the Apple TV with two HomePod Minis.

So, when the time comes to replace or upgrade that Apple TV - which should not be an issue for a few years at least - Apple better give me a compelling reason to buy another one of their boxes.

It's way slower and I hate seeing ads for Apple's crappy TV shows and movies. (sorry just imo... and not all of them.. but most) ... What was once something clean, simple and quick (what Apple was all about before) now becomes a mess. It's a shame.

I thought the poor success ratio of using my appletv was bc it’s an older model. I just house sat for a friend with the newest model and it wasnt any better. Apple has been talking about having “finally solved” the TV since Steve Jobs was still alive, and its still a broken wreck much of the time, and costs 10x the competition. Why.

Does this change also consolidate it on the phone? The phone often can't figure out if it wants iTunes or Apple TV, especially when redeeming codes.

AppleTV has been on AndroidTV for a very long time, but not on Android phones/Windows. Android phones and Windows computers can go to the tv.apple.com site and watch shows, but not any purchased items. Windows at least has iTunes, but it is sluggish and doesn't offer 4k resolution.

I bought 2 (maybe 3?) Apple TV 4s (one with the "new" remote, another with the even "newer" remote -- RIP Jony Ivie's designs).

Well, much as I tried, I just could not get used to the New Hodge-Podge "Every App for Itself" home screen(s) of Apple TV 4 and 4+ and 4++ etc. I had a new Sony TV (with Google TV) and access to every channel, including Apple TV+ -- so I unplugged all my Apple TV4s from various TVs, and reinstalled the much-more stable-looking Apple TV 3 layout. Like a breath fresh air. Welcome home, my friend!

Yes, Apple TV3 is down to 8-10 channels (even PBS left), but -- surprise! -- Apple made their TV+ channel available! So, between the Sony TV and a Roku and the Apple TV3, who needed Apple's newer contraptions anymore? -- Especially if they are going to make it "most difficult" to find, locate, and play your legally purchased movies, songs, TV series, et al (Apple TV4's treatment of Music was downright shabby, not to mention ugly) -- all to push you into the direction of their "Streaming Services" where nothing is saved; you don't own anything; and if you want to hear that music again, you must keep subscribing! (Obviously Apple stole this concept from Adobe!)

My best friend found out I had 2-3 Apple TV4s boxed up, and he so wanted 2 for his setup, I just gave them to him. He doesn't mind the choose-your-own-adventure setup of Apple TV4, but just what until he tries to adapt to this rumoured update!

This is the nail in the coffin for the ‘iTunes Store’ branding. Now, it will be the ‘Apple TV Store’ & ‘Apple Music Store’ etc.

As long as I can still purchase movies, I’m fine with it.
Agree. While you can purchase movies/TV shows via the TV app, it’s actually more expensive and doesn’t include up to date pricing and all of the content. I still have to go to the iTunes Store to get cheaper/promotional prices.

Sounds awful. I already deny the Apple TV app access to my viewing habits because i don't want to share that with Apple and have Apple curate and serve up what they harvest from standalone apps. I liked being able to go to the Movie and TV Show apps without having to deal with the barrage of Apple TV promotions.

Ready for a rewrite but so help me gosh if they require us to funnel in before fixing this whole “PLEASE WATCH OUR SHOWS! HERE THEY ARE AGAIN IN CASE YOU DIDN’T SEE THEM! HEY DO YOU LIKE SOCCER YET?!” situation, I am going to be put in a bad mood just before I get milked again so it might taste off.

Really? Wow.

I highly suggest the app CheapCharts, you build a wishlist and you get alerted when your item is on sale and/or the lowest ever price. Very useful.

They did not truly “solve” the TV even back in Steve Jobs era. If anything, that’s a marketing stunt rather than actual accomplishment at eliminating the need for multiple subscriptions and various plans. Look at what happened today should give you a good idea how “solved” that is.

I am totally confused by this statement:

As if the TV app wasn't confusing enough as it is. Which standalone apps are they referring? This article is written as if everybody is a psychic. There's just one TV app... a standalone app. Which other ones are there?
Hardly confusing, they’re referring to the iTunes apps which are these two apps on the Apple TV and the iTunes Store app on iOS.
