Not everyone knows the extent that they are being tracked. I still find people who don’t understand why they visit a site, then see an add from that site when visiting another site. They seem to think it’s a coincidence.
I have more issues with the fact that I say something in conversation, having not looked it up ever or in a very long time and all of a sudden facebook post an ad on my timeline for said object. How does that happen?

My argument was that people don't know the extent to which they are being tracked, nothing about Apple collecting or not collecting data.
We don't know to what extent Apple does with out data. They certainly don't come out and tell anyone exactly what they do with all the data they collect from iOS, iPadOS and macOS. Again not saying Apple is doing anything bad with the data but we have no idea.

Yea newspapers don't need to track because their ads can't be blocked. If Facebook and Google could only use conventional ads with no tracking they would not make any money whatsoever. Then everyone would lose the free apps they so desperately love.
How would they not make money? Newspapers sell these ads. They make money. Your argument is weak.

Or apps that track you location within 3ft accurate 24/7. Apps that record every keystroke. Or read everything on your copy/paste board.
Nor do lots of people understand how extremely detailed this information is and that it goes far beyond the surveillance capabilities of most governments.
and anonymised data is a farce, most of the time, because of the detail and unique identifiers.

Yea like I said. You are using Facebook which is a free service. You have not paid one penny to Facebook for anything they provide to you. So of course absolutely Facebook should be able to track you and try to monetize that any way they can within legal guidelines.

Have you ever heard of an Ad blocker? Really we are almost in 2021. I haven't seen a single ad on my computer in probably a decade. Every single person I know uses Ad blockers. Companies can make pennies off of ads nowadays. A huge corporation like Facebook or Google could not survive one day off conventional ads. And like I previously said. Newspapers sell ads on PAPER. You can't use an ad blocker on a piece of paper.

Selling an ad is one. Tracking your movements, every single transaction online, tracking every call, analysing every single picture you take, identifying the people in those pictures is something I’ve never seen in a piece of paper.

Wow dude. Seriously. That is scary. I hope you're being sarcastic and I missed the tone. We should all just trust Apple because Tim Cook says so and because they make sexy phones. Wow!
Yes. Because I do not believe Apple would recover from the repercussions of being two-faced in this regard. That is not to say every process they have within their huge infrastructure is perfect and some things can't be improved.

But I believe Tim Cook, when he says Apple sells you the product and you are not the product.

(even if I didn't believe, it wouldn't change anything)

Stop whining about ad blockers. They don’t stop the data collection.

You don't get it and can't even follow the conversation. The conversation is about why can't companies like Facebook not use data collection and only use ads to make money. Duh everyone blocks ads so they can't make any money. The only way they can make money is by tracking and data collection.

Ever heard of Cambridge analytica? They didn’t make any money on data. And Facebook wasn’t paid for the data? Facebook makes a lot of money on data collection and processing.

Yes of course they do and rightly so. They provide a service which people obviously love to use and don't want to pay for it. Just like Apple makes hardware that people love and Apple is worth $2T because of it. Apple isn't the only company that should be allowed to make money. And the entire Facebook thing is easy to solve. Don't want to be tracked, don't use Facebook. Easy

Really? Apple is been caught being two faced how many times over the years? They trumpet all day about human rights. Then when China tells them to do something which goes against human rights, Apple complies in a second because they don't want to lose any of the Chinese market. Apple is all about transparency supposedly. They were caught not being transparent about batteries and confusing people into buying brand new $1000 phones when all they needed was a $69 battery. They had to comply when they get tons of bad press. What about when people were committing suicide in factories that make iPhones. Apple had to go and pay to put up nets all around the factory so when people tried to jump out to their death they wouldn't hit the ground. Apple has been caught doing lots of things, but that doesn't matter to their staunchest supporters.
Sad but true

I don’t use Facebook, insta, Google et al.
yet they still trace me, collect my data. Why do they earn money on my data when I don’t use their services?

I've never used Facebook or had an account ever and Facebook doesn't track me. I have a tracking program on my computer which shows everything that has tried to track me and blocked. I never see anything to do with Facebook on there. I don't ever go to the Facebook website or use the app so maybe that is why.

I can’t believe that is true. And you don’t need any account, facebooks uses your device id to trace you. What tracker program do you use?

It’s damnear impossible to not be traced.
That Facebook thumb on every page? ever heard of pixel trackers? Those are the simple things. And it doesn’t have to be Facebook itself, there are many companies using facebooks tools to do the tracking.
if you don’t use any cookie, chapeau, but you won’t visit many websites as they won’t display a thing if you don’t allow a minimum of cookies.
And it’s not just the websites, apps can do way more.

Anytime anyone wants to disparage Google think of this. Google actually took on China. They lost the entire Chinese search engine market because of it. Last I heard they were 1 or 2 % of the search engine market in China because of it. Think about how many billions of dollars Google lost standing up to China. Apple would NEVER EVER EVER in a million years lose one penny by standing up to China. They saw what happened to Google and they made a financial decision to get in bed with China and follow everything China tells them to do so do they don't lose any market share over there. Facts are facts. Don't know how you can spin that any other way. Apple bows down to everything China tells them to do. Only two entities that can make Apple bend over are Netflix and China. Apple loves to throw their weight around other companies but they can't to China or Netflix.

That is a completely different discussion.
what tracker program do you use, how do you know you are not tracked on your phone?

I use three levels of ad blocking/tracking prevention on my home network. Some ads are blocked at the router level on my Synology router. I use Adguard Home DNS service which blocks all ads and tracking services. Then I use the standalone Adguard Mac app which adds even more add blocking and tracking prevention. I loathe Facebook not because of data collection but a general loathing of all social media and what it has done to society. I would never use Facebook or go to their website. I also never see the like buttons anywhere as all the software I use removes all those buttons from all websites. And whenever I am not home, I use Synology VPN to VPN back to my home network so my phone is protected by ad/tracking prevention on my home network.

I was going to quote someone, but then realized I had been misreading what was wrote.

My thoughts on the tracking -

The bigger issue is this: The companies who collect your data to make money took it too far. What we use to have via TV/Radio/Print for advertising were no personal data was collected, to system were advertising is now heavily based on an over abundant data collection mindset. I have no personal issue with Google/Facebook/etc collecting minimum info to process ads. What I don't understand is this: Why are they collecting the information and then selling it? Why can't they just build a system, where minimum information is collected, they offer a platform for business to then buy categories to market to. Just as years ago, if you wanted to reach a target audience, you bought ad space in the median that sold to that target audience.

Example: I am a middle aged white guy. Company Underpants buys ad space from FB/Google that targets categories I am in. I would then get ads about Company Underpants. Company Underpants doesn't need any of my personal information - EVER!!! FB/Google/etc keep what data I gave them private, which makes me a very happy end-user, and makes them a much better company.

They had no choice but to take it to this level with the invention and rise of ad blockers. Now ad blockers are so prevalent they come preinstalled in a lot of instances. If companies were forced to rely on old antiquated methodologies of advertising they would go bankrupt and would have to turn all their free services into paid services which obviously people would have a problem with. It's basically a trade off. Not saying its a good or preferred trade off but a trade off nonetheless. If we want free services like Facebook or Gmail or Youtube to continue to be free then we have to live with targeted advertising. Or they could just stop targeting users and start charging for everything. Trade Offs

I agree. So why can’t facebook sell ads without knowing everything about my life?

Sorry to disappoint you, your phone has no protection against trackers, cookies, location services, etc. A vpn only will hide your IP address to some extend, but your unique device id will still identify you.

about ad blockers. They BLOCK adds. That’s it. You don’t get them shown in your browser, with luck they are not loaded.
Blocking every tracking with adguard is limited because cookies are still allowed in your browser. Try blocking every cookie and visit some website. The result is abysmal. Lots of sites will simply refuse you, and sites that do show something look horrible. Cookies have a useful function.

We do share a loathing of the “social media” however. I wouldn’t mind if they where declared criminal. Worldwide.
