What! Why not hold back 13.0 and just release 13.1? There is no point in releasing 13.0 if it already has known issues that are fixed.
Why not hold 13.1 and just wait for 13.2 and release that when it's ready?

Because 13.1 is the real iOS 13. The one being released with the new phones on the 19th is a buggy stopgap because new phones always have to ship with a new OS, even if it’s not ready. Hopefully i(Pad)OS 13.1 on the 30th will bring some actual stability.

Because 13.1 is just the original iOS 13.
That could be said about a lot of x.1 releases, while it didn't prevent x.0 being released.

I want to buy the new Watch Series 5, but that will require iOS13 on my phone, and I’m waiting until at least 13.1 before I update from iOS12, so I guess the watch will have to wait a month...

tvOS 13 as it sits today is still a floating dumpster fire. At least if you would normally pair a pair of HomePods to it, use Netflix, or would expect to only see one copy of your user account in Control Center.

Also, any mention of a release date for Catalina? Did I miss that during the keynote today?

I'm sure that will be more than 11 days after 13.1.

There is nothing wrong with pushing back a release date a bit if it means your product will more reliable. We are talking less than two weeks here. Obviously I can't speak for everyone, but I'd rather wait a bit to even have a marginally more stable product.

What I really want to know is the timing of the OS update (whether you call it iOS or audioOS I don't care) for HomePods, ...

I wouldn't be surprised if it is called HomeOS as the HomePod is supposed to be a smart hub of some sort.

How about the iOS 13 GM?
It should be now, or there’s going to be a nightmare to release apps on time.
Xcode 11 is still in Beta.
And what about macOS Catalina? Not a word was said about it.

A new beta may come out either later today or tomorrow (based on the frequency of previous releases).

Apple seems to be running behind on software this year. First the 13.1 feature fork before the official 13 release, then the delay on the new computational photo mode announced today, and now the staggered release for iPad OS. Fine with me - whatever it takes to get it stable

Apple has been late on soft- and hardware for years.
I'd say since Tim Cook took over, but then people will be bitching at me again. So I better don't.

Oops ;)

Apparently never. We were supposed to know that beta 8 was the GM 3 weeks ago, somehow. What a joke.
Except that there is a GM that was released today and it's not the same build as 13.0 beta 8.
Yes, it will, and I called it back during beta 2. It was already evident at that time.
To be fair, you also called it that 13.0 won't be released and it will be 13.1 instead.

Developers and public beta testers who have already upgraded to iOS 13.1 on a main may want to downgrade to iOS 13 to be able to restore their new iPhones from an iCloud backup on launch day.

How do you downgrade from 13.1 to 13.0 so that you can restore from an iCloud backup?

Has a .1 ever come 11 days later?

Has a .1 ever come 11 days later?
Probably not. Not sure that says too much one way or another, and can even imply in some sense that 13.1 might not be as stable as it could be if more time was spent on it like in previous years.

If a person is on 13.1 right now, is it better to downgrade to 13 (and if so, how do you do that?) before getting a new phone or is it better to just wait for a new phone, enroll it in the pb 13 and upgrade it to 13.1, then restore from a back up? This is such a cluster@#$%

So we a.l agree it makes sense to ask for 13.1? It’s only 2 weeks later.

Which turned out be right for iPad.
And although I was wrong about that for iPhone, you can tell that it is being done begrudgingly. Instead of releasing 13.0 proudly for all early in the week, they are waiting until the day before the new iPhones ship, and pushing it out of pure necessity. Then fast tracking 13.1 to be released an unprecedented 11 days later.

I was wrong about one point, and I was wrong because I gave Apple the benefit of the doubt that they wouldn't do something this stupid. I was wrong.

There was no necessity to ship 13.0 on older iPhones. They’re not shipping watchOS 6.0 on older Watch series either.
