I really hope Apple don't sign the final death warrant for their pro market with this Mac Pro refresh. What with Final Cut Pro X, a seriously cut down Lion Server and no XServe, i think this may be the final nail in the coffin for the Apple Pro market :(

Sorry, man, but I don't know what else Apple could do to make it any clearer:

Apple does not care about the pro market.

Have you tried 128GB on current Mac Pros? No reason it shouldn't work, just don't think anyone has bothered to test and report. If they use LGA 2011 then it should be at least 128GB per CPU.

Well, we have an older Mac Pro with DDR2 slots... But we could in theory buy the current version and upgrade all slots to 16 GBs, true. That would be quite expensive though. It would probably be cheaper to simply have a Mac Pro option with 16 (dare I even ask for 32) slots. Plus, for what we do 128 GBs might soon turn out to not be enough. So, more upgradability in the future would be nice.

Ah, I was actually thinking of 32GB+2x16GB per CPU. OWC said they couldn't get 4x16GB DIMMs per CPU working, but 3x16GB does work. I doubt the next Mac Pros will have any more memory slots per CPU sadly, so the only solution will be to use larger DIMMs.

Cutting the cost to compete with what? iMac's?

Apple is not going to make an entry level tower. Consumer CPU's have no place in the Mac Pro line.

While I agree, I still wish Apple would build a headless desktop with consumer quad core desktop chips. Like a Mac Pro Mini or Mac Prosumer or xMac. I don't care but I doubt that will happen. My next computer will most likely end up being a hackintosh *shrugs*

Since they are distributing digitally, and since GM is available, they could have started selling Lion starting July 2nd.

The only reason they wait is for developers to test Lion. Nothing else.

Not really. The 2-3 week lag between GM and availability used to be about sending it off to manufacturing. There was also work done during this time to prepare for the launch in stores, finalize marketing plans/etc.

Because this is the first major release that Apple is having to coordinate between manufacturing, the App store, physical stores, etc... I'd be very surprised that they would suddenly give up that 2 week lag. I'm not sure I'd want to give up that 2 week prep period, since it can be used to sync up releases that may not come in on the same day.

14th?

if Lion was going to be released this week, on the 14th, I would think that the Lion page on apple.com would have been updated by now with this information instead of still saying "coming in July"

i7 processors are the same price as Xeon versions, same specifications except ECC memory support.

The much higher clock rate and better architecture are certainly an advantage for many workflows, but not when you can use all the processor power available. Memory performance and capacity is also much better on such a Westmere system.

How come the memory performance is better on an older architecture? Don't get me wrong I'm not trying to start an argument :) I use a 12 core MP, but was seriously considering getting these new(er) ones..

Would it? They released FCPX without preannouncing the date.

Great news if it's true! I can't wait to see what Apple has in mind for the MBA refresh. If it can run SC2 at a decent clip, I am so in!!

well I would consider that a little different than a release of a new version of OS X. FCPX also didn't have previews and demos at Apple keynote events and pages of information on apple.com building up to the release. Also with past major releases of OS X the actual release date is usually announced and updated on apple.com a couple of weeks before release.

If they move the Mac Pro to the i7 it is the end of the Pro line at Apple.

Not if they only move the low end MP (4/6 core) to i7. That machine already doesn't fit any "pro" definition by any stretch of the imagination.

i7 for single chip and xeon just for the high end 8/12 core makes perfect sense, they should have gone with that config years ago.

Apple is not going to make an entry level tower.

Heck, they do already, it's called the MP quad. Of course some chumps have been suckered into thinking it's a "pro" machine by the "pro" price tag.

But FCPX did have a demo at a keynote. As I recall the audience went wild (in a good way) before they went wild after release (in a bad way).

Quite unlikely - Apple's lineup is all ATI/Intel HD now except for the very old designs with Core 2 / 320M integrated graphics.

Fermi is great, but you'll not be seeing it with Apple OSX.

They've gone back and forth over the years. It looks like they pretty much stake out who they will throw money at for a period of time (1-2 generations) and then let them fight each other again the next time around. Apple is out for the best bang for the buck that meets their needs.

Quadro 4000 is Fermi based and has been available for Mac Pro's for almost a year now.
