Apple to Unveil Next Generation iPhone on September 10

What are you talking about? The beta I have is quiet stable(apart from safari crashes).

Also keep in mind the beta we have is probably well over 2-3 weeks old compared to internally

maybe on the iPhone (which i agree on) but DEF. not ready to go live on the iPad AT ALL. beta 5 is actually a step backwards from the 4th beta on my iPad 3

That's off contract.

still not cheap if they want to grab some of the asian markets. nexus 4 is cheap not this and for the western world its kinda uninteresting as you can get the "high end" device for 1€ already on contract

If they do an official announcement for this event in the next week I will probably wait and see if the iMac will come out with it.

The 8 GB 5C will be $329 to $349; 16 GB $429 to $449.

You think they'll make an 8GB 5C?

Everything so far looks like the 5C will be very similar to the existing 5, but with a different shell. The lowest capacity 5 is 16GB. Even the old 4Ss being sold now are 16GB... you have to step down to the iPhone 4 to get an 8GB model.

Best week ever

New iPhone, cheaper iPhone generation, iOS7, AND GRAND THEFT AUTO 5?????? Praise the lord!

$300 still isn't low enough to attract low price seeking buyers and those who are willing to buy expensive phones are already mostly on contract so the appeal of the Nexus 4 is greatly diminished. AFAIK it's a lukewarm seller just like all other Nexus devices despite its relatively low price and the hype on the internet.

The real "cheap" phones are the ones in the $50-$200 range. Have we forgotten what the best selling individual Samsung smartphone model between June 2010 and July 2012 in North America was? It was the Prevail, a $50-150 smartphone that no self-respecting geeks paid any attention to. That's a market Apple will have trouble addressing and not really one addressed by this new iPhone model.

Makes sense for the Chinese market

This move makes a lot of sense in the Chinese market. First, the mainland is still on 3G and high volumes of data are absurdly expensive. When I say high volumes, I mean anything over 1G per month. Second, many people are still using the iPhones on China mobile, and therefore don't even have 3G yet. Third, to the extent that people do have 3G service on their iPhones, it is because they are using one phone on China Mobile and another on China Unicom. All of this is due to a reluctance to give up a cherished old number tied to China Mobile (numbers can't be transferred between networks). In other words, there has been little reason for most people to move to the iPhone 5. Given the LTE is set to arrive only next year, what would you buy? A final point: the colour options also make a lot of sense in the Chinese market. The Apple aesthetic is not entirely portable to Chinese device culture. There are certainly who "get it," but many, many more who prefer colour, flourishes, and "mods." The 5C could be a very smart move for many reasons.

The original 8 GB iPhone was $399 after Apple dropped the price on it (it was originally $599).

Even with inflation, that would make the iPhone 5C more expensive*, and while you would expect it to have higher end components now, the cost of starting manufacturing for the original iPhone and sourcing components in lower quantities would have been higher back in 2007, I assume. Perhaps they were willing to settle with lower margins back then?

EDIT: *Assuming $490 is correct.

Absolutely, 32 64 128 please. It's time, Apple!

Looking like a September 20th release to me. Can't wait! I'm long overduez.

Apple doesn't have to go after the ultra-cheap market... do they?

Samsung sells $650 flagships and $50 budget smartphones.

But I don't see why Apple needs to go down that road.

Why is everyone assuming that these will be a cheaper version of the iPhone instead of an outright replacement? After all the original iPhone was aluminium then the 3G and 3GS that followed were plastic-bodied. That design was slightly thicker than the original too.
Apple's design ethic in iOS 7 is too different from the glossiness, chamfered edges and chrome lines of the iPhone 5 for it to make sense releasing them as one package. But this move would certainly help Apple to cut costs if nothing else.
From what I've seen I think I'll like this design when it's finally out (provided the screen is black on the white-backed model).
