30" and 24" 16:10? All Apple has to do is make the screen take up the chin, correct?

I can't imagine they are going to go all the way up to 30". Is that really how big it would be just by changing over to 16:10?

I wouldn't be surprised to see a 24" model. If they are trying to reduce costs by standardizing the size of things, all I know is 24" is one of the most popular screen sizes on the market today.

Like the above poster, I, too, would love to see a cheaper entry level model, but unless they make it out of plastic I don't really see it happening at an attractive enough price to make it a good upsell over a mini.

Personally I think that if there is an update this week it is going to be an improvement of the guts without a design refresh.

I just bought a 27" i7Q iMac and love it but... this puppy is going back to apple online if they announce a new iMac this week. I have until March 3rd until the 14 days are up. This is a beautiful machine and much more than I need but this release sounds like it could be a major upgrade...game changer. (if they follow the same rumored MacBook Pro specs.) I already got stuck with a G5 PPC 30 days before Intels were announced.

I sure hope so! I'm going to be switching my setup to an iMac and MacBook Air once they're updated.

I can't wait until my money comes in cause I want a new imac so effing bad!!!!
I tossed out my dear flower power imac like 6 months ago. Didn't want to but it was time. Never a virus. EVER!! Eat that pc!
And my 17 inch g4 can't handle the new stuff. Hell it can't even use snow leopard. I still have it though, in the closet. Damn, that screen is awesome and the stainless steel neck. Oh man I wish I could upgrade that beast!!!!
The new 27 inch imac is a monster!!!! Too big, GORGEOUS AS HELL, but to big. The 21.5 inch is a mother***** of a machine. All that sweet aluminum turns me on. LOL! I have to get that but I'm going to wait to see what's up.

They can keep the dimensions the same with the current one if all they do is make the screen take up the entire front of the machine.

There's a big difference from July-August to March when speaking of daily use needs. Your smiley face didn't soften the blow. :)

they should come back at 16:10, and it would be a shame to reduce the screen size: those new displays are gorgeous!! I think a combined refresh is in line with the long promised launch of LightPeak, and also a boost in the adoption of SSDs, if your internal HD is a crappy 5400rpm it would anyway take ages to move files, even with lightpeak...

I never said it was? The chin isn't just for show. It houses components. They can keep using the same components now if all they do is make the screen take up the chin. The iMac will stay the same dimensions.

Every iMac ive ever taken apart, the entire depth of the chin has been exploited for the speakers. If they made an imac with no chin they would have to either take a hit to the sound quality or come up with a trick design that elongated the housings of the speakers (thus making them take up more sq-inch of area). probably wouldn't be too cramped on the 27. while most of us may see this as a mute point, i do think apple takes the sound quality on these machines fairly seriously. there is some serious engineering in those little speakers, definitely not an afterthought.

Why would they use the same components in an upgraded iMac?

because all imacs have the same components, and all computers for that matter. upgrading the power of the components doesnt inherently change the shape or size of the boards they sit on. if anything, things are usually getting smaller and easier to package rather than the other direction

Again, the machine can stay the same dimensions. And the cinema display speakers aren't much worse than the iMacs.

Who in their right mind uses the internal speakers? I mean, they sound like crap.

I LOVE the current design of the iMac's. I hope they do not change it at all. Of course every new product seems to be more beautiful then the last. (I think my 13" Air is a piece of art.)

Just give us mainstream priced desktop for under $900 and I'll be in line when the store opens. What's a standard screen panel size under the 21.5 they could adopt?

Amen to that.

As for going back to a 16:10 screen, I strongly doubt that will happen. Apple is in the process of moving ALL of their desktops and notebooks to 16:9. Like it or not, that's where the industry is headed.

I would have agreed with this if the new 13" MBA was 16:9 but it isn't. The only reason the 11.6" is 16:9 is to fit the full size keyboard.

2011 will be a great year! Looking forward to:

• iPhone 5
• iPad 2
• iOS 5
• Xcode 4
• OSX Lion
• New iMac and/or new MBP's

:apple:

Plus white iphone
Retina displays for everybody
Classic ipod revived ?

and the rumor that Verizon will get the iphone.

WOW! What a company.

As somebody wrote in another thread.

The classics signs of a company going downhill!

Let me guess, tomorrow "rumor" has it that the new Mac Mini will be released soon. Followed by a surprise Mac Pro! While we're at it, why not throw in a special post production Xserve refresh and a Powerbook G5. Rumor says they'll be released next Tuesday.

.......Really people. Really.

Thanks Dad

I am so curious, I can' wait. :D

I am waiting for the iMac you can lay flat with a slight angle, i.e. the back bracket holder is adjustable

That would give us a huge book type display with on screen typing or keyboard optional.

They did file that patent application.

Personally im hoping for a 24" 16:10 screen, Sandy Bridge and discrete Nvidia GPUs in an i5 cpu flavouring iMac,

Just starting new job, and may/june ill be upgrading from using my MBP as my main system to actually having a working home office, and an iMac is just what i want, but i have an irrational "thing" against ATI graphics that i really cant explain, so hopefully Nvidia + Intels "arrangement: will see a sandybridge + Nivida GPU iMac announced shortly ..

Ahhh i can dream

The moment the new iMacs are available I'm putting an order on. My 4 and a half year old iMac (lowest spec 17") is starting to show its age. Treating myself to whatever the highest end stock model will be. It should be a nice leap :D.

Though I'm also very tempted to just build a PC thanks to Apple's recent dickish policies.
