Wait for Lion

Is it worth waiting until Apple releases Lion? I have had issues when I upgrade operating systems. First from Panther to Tiger, and then from Tiger to Leopard.

[...]You can be with the family (if you have one) in the same room quietly doing your thing ,
instead of isolating yourself in front of the desktop in another room.
(I know same, but at least you are all in the same room:)
Ahahahah that made my day :D
This is so sad -but, alas! so true!- :p

If you have problems you should just do a fresh install of Lion instead of upgrading.

You pay at least 25 percent more in the Apple Store, if you compare the Apple Store prices with "street prices". Apple RAM (8 GB) for my MBP 17" costs > 500,- Euros in the Apple Store. The same RAM (Samsung) costs only 90,- Euros if you buy it in a online PC Store.
Apple RAM has always been priced higher than "street" prices. This is true in the USA too. The Macs themselves, though, really can't be compared due to Apple's strict discount policy.

Worthy graphics upgrade please :D
I have a feeling we WILL see a GPU update when the iMacs are next refreshed. However, one continuing problem for Apple is heat dissipation. The high-end GPUs today are better than the previous generation in this regard, yes... but still are not ideal for Apple to use. Therefore, I am expecting an update to the next-gen ATI GPUs (6xxx series) but not the highest-end cards - too much heat for the poor iMac to handle.

I just always order the highest spec machine on the Apple Online Store that can't be user upgraded (like the cpu) and then go to OWC and order the RAM for much cheaper and a HDD/SSD if need be.

Are they upgrading the iMac's internals as well as changing the screen sizes??!

That is my big question, I know you're never supposed to wait for tech you "need" but I cannot wait for this!!

3D screens coming. Not that I am hoping for that. I have no desire to watch 3D movies. But entertainment is a big part of Apple products now. An imac can be the entertainment system of a room.

Any update to the iMac will be internal in nature. This design just came out in October 2009 and if you follow Apple, their Mac redesign cycle is approximately 2 years and 4 months. That would make an iMac redesign unlikely until at least early 2012...sorry guys. This update will just be spec bumps in processor and disk space.

An introduction of a different screen size is possible, but 21.5" or 27" is a pretty nice lineup in my eyes.

You know HDD and RAM aren't user upgradeable without voiding your Apple Care right? Such a PITA.

RAM is user-upgradeable. There is even an instruction on the Apple's website for it. Updating the HDD may void the Apple Care as you must take the computer apart to access it... Still, if you build the old HDD back prior to sending in the computer, they will never know :)

Interesting thread.

I'm a newbie to all things mac having previously only ever used..........pc's and intend to get an imac this year.

Coming from the dark side i'm used to buying a new pc with the latest gfx card, the latest soundcard and all the other whizz-bang stuff pretty much as standard.

Looking at apple, it seems that the choices are far more limited when it comes to upgrading hardware such as gfx card and i assume it's because of restrictions within the space allocated to the hardware but also to ensure there are no conflicts when it comes to software - something which all pc users are more than aware of.

What i'd like to see as someone who is intending to buy his first apple product is an upgrade to the gfx card. The screen size is fine; the ram is fine and easily upgradeable but the gfx are more than a year old and hardly top end though i'm sure as is the apple way more than up to the task for anything it needs to do.

Can we realistically expect an upgrade to the gfx ?

here's hoping!;)

RAM not upgradeable without voiding AC???
Since when? Since tomorrow? ;)
Of course the RAM is upgradeable...

(If you install bad RAM and your motherboard get fried, that might no be cover by your AC but that surely doesn't void your AC)

Do the iMacs use mobile forms of the processors? If not, they aren't coming out for at least another month or two. Intel hasn't started shipping corrected desktop chipsets for sandyBridge yet. Can't make the computer without the parts...

To MBP or iMac? (Or both?)

I'm just guessing of course but I was thinking perhaps the imac may get it eventually. Then again it is a little gimmicky to add the cost for watching a movie from time to time. Perhaps having the ability to stream 3D movies through appletv is more realistic?

Since there were "smaller-cheaper" rumors a while back, there is a possibility we see a smaller-cheaper iMac. I've always thought a 17" would be good. Drop some of the infrastructure--no display port, less USB/FW. Bulky computers are yesterday. Give us higher def on smaller screens!
