Apple to 'Vigorously' Defend Itself in Nokia Lawsuit

Is that a fact eh Goona?

I bet most of the population of 3rd world countries are more concerned with feeding themselves than a pathetic phone, you insensitive little ****.

You need to go to a 3rd world country and see how many people have mobile phones even though they don't have money for food!

I didn't say "Nokia had different terms for Apple", I said "Apple claims...". So far we only have "Nokia claims..." and "Apple claims...".

You on the other hand do actually claim that terms for Apple were the same. So how do you know that? Any basis for that apart from pure conjecture? Even Nokia hasn't made this claim in public, so I have no idea where you get it from. :(

that is the basis of the essential patents that are taken as part of telecom standards: they have to be licensed in fair terms. a company can't be held as hostage and prevented from entering the markets by extracting unfair amounts of royalties. furthermore, there are so many cases of licensing cases in the industry that the ball park of what are fair terms is pretty much settled. nokia alone has contracts with 40 companies. so they pretty much know what the fair terms are, it just doesn't make any sense to sue apple in hope for getting extraordinary terms, they won't get such terms in court.

Hmm . . I have to ask though. Doesn't Apple have a patent on the iphone design and layout of OS etc.. Why is it that they aren't getting paid big from all these biters.

Because no company has copied the iPhone UI enough to warrant royalty payments?

Fear not - there is no conspiracy against Apple :)

When it comes to IP in standards based high volume industry such as telecommunications license terms are very much set in stone even before the said standard is accepted by the industry. If you get greedy its no go and you can flush your wishes of getting your "standard" accepted down the toilet.

I've never (even here) seen so many uninformed posts, though a few have it right. It is not a question of whether NOK has some valid patents. It is not a question of aapl's right to use the technology. It is a question of what are fair, non-discriminatory terms.

And as far as NOK being so big because of it's revenue, revenue doesn't mean squat if you're not making much money on all that revenue. Just ask General Motors.

Shhhhhhhhhh, don't let the Nokia fanboys hear this.

I can't understand what level of fanboyishness would ever make someone use the 3rd world as a dig at a faceless corporation in defence of another faceless corporation, when neither of them give a **** what you think of them anyway.

How many 3rd world countries have you visited?

Looking at your posts I can see you're passionate about Apple and the iPhone but FFS, please think before you post.

Now imagine you live in a really poor third world country, and your village has a mobile phone, which lets you find out which of the two markets nearby has food and at which price, instead of walking twenty miles to find out. There are people who actually use mobile phones for useful communication instead of an excuse for shouting loudly in public.

I understand that Gnasher but to use some of the most impoverished people as a dig at a faceless corporation is simply sick in my book.

How did I have a dig at Nokia or anybody, you can stop being in arms fanboy! I've been to many 3rd world countries where they use cheap 20 dollar Nokia phones, sue me for stating this!

Yeah I had a dig at your precious Nokia, sue me!

Yep, I'm a massive Nokia fan.

The truth is I'm a paid Nokia Shill, born and bred in Finland unleashed onto the internet to right the wrongs that Apple have committed upon my beloved company, willing to defend them till the death....

BTW, you still haven't answered this:

Again please stop dodging the question, do you have a link/proof of that statistic?

Is that because you can't answer it and like to fabricate things?

A little over $5 billion of that is actual cash. ;)

Better stay away from the stock market, or get some help with financial statements. Below are cash rankings as of mid March of 2009, before aapl's fiscal 2Q, 3Q and 4Q updates. Aapl now has $34B cash.

"Here are the top 15 companies (along with their quotes, charts, and total cash positions) that have hoarded the most cash, in that order. Financials were excluded for obvious reasons (and that includes GE):

Exxon Mobil - (XOM), Chart, Total Cash: $32.007 Billion
Cisco Systems - (CSCO), Chart, Total Cash: $29.531 Billion
Apple - (AAPL), Chart, Total Cash: $25.647 Billion
Berkshire Hathaway - (BRK.A), Chart, Total Cash: $25.539 Billion
Pfizer Inc - (PFE), Chart, Total Cash: $23.731 Billion
Toyota Motor - (TM), Chart, Total Cash: $23.151 Billion
Microsoft - (MSFT), Chart, Total Cash: $20.298 Billion
Google - (GOOG), Chart, Total Cash: $15.846 Billion
Royal Dutch Shell - (RDS.A), Chart, Total Cash: $15.188 Billion
Wyeth - (WYE), Chart, Total Cash: $14.54 Billion
IBM - (IBM), Chart, Total Cash: $12.907 Billion
Johnson & Johnson - (JNJ), Chart, Total Cash: $12.809 Billion
Intel - (INTC), Chart, Total Cash: $11.843 Billion
Hewlett Packard - (HPQ), Chart, Total Cash: $11.255 Billion
Oracle - (ORCL), Chart, Total Cash: $10.646 Billion"

I definitely don't hate Apple. I've been Mac user since day one but this doesn't make a mindless fanboy accepting everything they do. I believe Apple dropped the ball on this one so they need to pay up. Its simple as that.

Same with me. Without Apple I wouldn't have a career however, I am not a blind follower especially because Apple as of lately has really changed into everything they were against.

Actually, the Engadget article isn't that bad, except that Engadget isn't objective and here's a client list of Fairfield (probably used as a paid expert witness by NOK in earlier cases):

"Some Major Clients:

American Express
Asahi Glass Company
Boeing
Chemtura
Delphi
Dow Chemical
Hughes Research
Japan Patent Office
Nokia
Rohm and Haas
University of Pennsylvania
Pitney Bowes
Rockwell Science Center
Rutgers University
Shell
Siemens
Telcordia
Texas Instruments"

And anyone who's still arguing that NOK is being greedy, or that aapl isn't playing by the rules, really either can't read or just doesn't get it.

True, they're perceived as Apple fanboys; hence the highly rated comment on the site about engadget (finally) having a fair article on the subject of Apple.

What's funny, did you look/read it?

Citing Engadget as an objective source is funny. However, I read it and I said it's a worthwhile read even if mildly slanted. Bottom line: it's a lawsuit between two large tech companies on very complicated issues. It's far from black and white. Consequently, the entire thread has been a waste.

In the investment community Engadget is hardly considered to be "fanboys." Just the opposite. And except for one or two, the highly rated comments
about it being a fair article were along the lines of the following:

"Shyam D @ Oct 29th 2009 11:53AM
I have one request for Nilay.
Please print out this Post in size 200 font, and post it up in Engadget headquarters as an example of how to write a good article."

"mail @ Oct 29th 2009 12:01PM
Actual investigative reporting! I thought this died years ago. Thank you Nilay for actually informing us about the issues instead of simply quoting people's opinions and then throwing some speculation of your own in on top of that. Keep up the great work."

No one is paying for anything. The other 40 companies have just entered cross-licensing agreements, allowing Nokia to develop products containing the "intellectual property" owned by those other companies. Nokia is looking for such a cross-licensing agreement with Apple so they can go and "violate" all the obvious stuff that Apple has patented recently for the iPhone.
