I wonder if Apple did this on purpose to thwart those of us that make our own DVD/Bluray rips? They seem to be taking their sweet time to fix it or they ignoring it all together.

This also happens to stuff sold via iTunes, so I have stopped buying stuff there completely and switched to Hulu/Netflix instead.

Are there any posts or threads on the Apple discussion forums about this issue? Out of all the people out there that have Apple TVs, even on this forum, I only see about 15-20 people complaining in here about the issue. I know there are a lot more people on this forum alone that have Apple TVs.

Are we really the monitory and just have bad luck, or are there many more people with the issue?

Apple has introduced a number of issues playing video files lately.

Agreed. I do not dispute that Apple occasionally steps in it.

The files I have on my ATV that stutter and stop were encoded with ffmpeg (lavf).

An interesting observation. I have had no problem with my handbrake encodes, nor purchased movies from the iTunes Store.

I also have this issue after the last upgrade I finally applied last week. The curious thing is that the Netflix app needs to buffer every 30 seconds or so, but apps like PBS stream just fine. I haven't had time to try any video from my iTunes shared library.

It's looking like there was a network protocol change in the update that corrupted some streaming services for certain protocols.

Thanks Apple!!

All mine are handbrake encodes and I have had the ATV seize for over 10 minutes trying to 'buffer'. A 'restart' sometimes fixes it for the duration of the content, but then it's back again.

I'm running a gigabit wired network with no routers or other 'stuff' between any of the units and the Mac Pro repository. Getting very discouraged.

I actually responded to another thread (a zombie) and was directed to this one.

So, no one has a surefire 'fix' yet?

Now that you mention it, Sky News doesn't buffer either. Is it compressed differently than the local content? Is this some kind of 'flag' issue? Although if iTunes content does it too, probably not...

Does this issue occur on the newest version of the Apple TV3? I've got a launch day Apple TV3 and am willing to replace it with a new one if the studdering issue is not present on the newest version.

Both models stutter. The difference is that you can't backdate the newer version to the unaffected version of software.

I've been having nothing but great luck with the latest 6.3 update. Not sure why it fixed my issues and not others.

Can anyone else confirm that 6.3 fixes the issue? I'm still on 5.3 having downgraded and would love to get back up to date but so much of my library doesn't work with 6+ I just daren't.

It is not a universal problem. Sooner or later you are just going to have to try it. :)

On what exact launch date did you get yours? If it was in March, 2012, then hang on to it because you can at least revert to previous software!

I'm not having any audio sync issues but I have noticed that if I AirPlay a video to my AppleTV since the update it will last about 5 minutes, stop and return to the main menu.

If I select the video from the Computers section there are no issues.

Happens with all encoded resolutions, iTunes-purchased or not. If I push content to the AppleTV it stops, if I use the AppleTV to pull content from my machine it works. Really strange.

I noticed Hulu would sometimes lose lip sync, but this was usually when the kids have been playing their stuff all day.

In fact the first thing I do in the evening once they're asleep and my wife and I want to put something on... is to restart the ATV box.

I'm thinking I may just try 6.3 and see how it goes. I have 5.x downloaded so as long as Apple is still signing it I should be able to revert back fast enough. I really want the new updates.

let us know, would like to update as well.

After trying the latest update and things just getting worse and worse, I finally decided to dig out a micro USB cable and rollback to 5.3. It works flawlessly now and for the first time in months I was able to watch a movie without any issues. To my surprise, all of the latest apps were present and everything works as it always did.

I'm not sure who these people are who were posting that the latest update resolved issues, it does not (or at least the issues this thread was started about were not only unresolved but were made even worse by each update).

If you have the ability to restore 5.3 I highly encourage you to do so and don't update.

I am one of those people that the latest update resolved all the issues I had, which were the same as you described in the OP. Guess I am just lucky, just because it doesn't work for you, doesn't mean it won't for us.

Glad you were able to get your problems fixed as well though.

I just hope Apple doesn't break it again with their next update.

Normally we stream Netflix on our ATV & it's reliable & good quality. But last night we decided to stream Boardwalk Empire from iTunes & gave up tonight due to buffering issues. We actually ordered the DVD from Amazon to complete the now very expensive season 4. Internet is 100meg, wifi solid, & Netflix & everything else is fine. We won't stream anything else from iTunes until Apple has fix.

I had the same with "The Returned" when it was 'show-of-the-week' over at iTunes. The picture got all juddery and started stuttering during movement.

Don't give up though, just go into the settings and switch to 720p. Everything will be fine then.

I also echo everyone's frustration on the buffering issue! Brutal! Weird thing too is I'm on update 6.1 with no option for upgrade to 6.2 or 6.3 like some here have. The ATV3 states I'm up to date with the 6.1 lol could it be because I haven't updated my iTunes lately? regardless from what I'm reading the 5.3 is the solution for now so How do I find out if my ATV3 can rollback ? Thx
