Apple TV 6.2 is out. Anyone brave enough to update and check if the issue has been resolved? I would volunteer but unless I know 100% that Apple is still signing version 5.3 I'm not going to bother.

Found a file that buffers like clockwork. Updating the Apple TV literally as I write this, will report back as soon as it's done and I've played the file again.

Ugh. Not fixed. Could even argue that it's more pronounced, but that could well be in my head. Regardless, they still haven't sorted it out.

Can't even get the download to start yet here in San Diego and nearly 6:00pm (have been trying all day). I know it's a busy day for Apple's servers with all three platforms being updated today (iPhone/iPad/Macs/AppleTV) but geez...

The judder is even worse? Oh my...

Probably not actually worse. I was just already at a point in the episode where there was a lot of panning so it was very apparent a bit quicker than usual.

I know remuxing again hasn't worked for everyone but it's definitely fixed things for me. Not wild about having to remux everything, but at least I have a solution. Having to dodge updating the Apple TV all the time was getting on my nerves.

The bad thing is that the judder happens to some stuff bought on the iTunes store as well, even on something quite new and popular.

I still can't believe it's taking them absolute ages to sort this out. If this was the case with one's own material then so be it, but if they're selling shows on iTunes which also end up with judder then this should have been sorted ages ago...

Here's a boring "me too" comment.

My ATV 3 connected via Ethernet is acting up completely after the latest update. iTunes content doesn't start to play, or buffers like crazy with frame drops and everything.

I've restored the firmware using the menu option (not USB) but it did not help at all.

What I do not understand is that sometimes a TV show will fill the buffer but it will not start playing. There's this spinner on the left side of the progress bar that just spins while the file is buffered.

And I'm talking about iTunes TV shows, not some transcoded content from somewhere on the internet.

It's really a shame because I use my Apple TV a lot.

It cannot be a network issue and it cannot be an iTunes issue at least between Mac computers.

Home sharing works from my old MacPro to my MacBookPro which is also connected to my TV using an HDMI adapter.

So, iTunes sharing works, but ATV file streaming is somehow broken beyond belief.

Was 6.0 free of this judder issue or do I need to revert back to an even earlier version?

How do you restore the firmware to the previous version? The option I'm seeing will restore everything whilst simultaneously upgrading the software to the newest available version.

I did not say that I downgraded. I just restored the device to its factory settings hoping that it would somehow clean itself up.

Sometimes log files, temporary downloads and other content simply renders any device unusable.

Even your iPhone accumulates useless old files over time.

But, as I already mentioned, it did not help at all. I suspect a change in firmware that is causing that issue. Maybe Apple wanted to reduce overall network traffic by buffering less data.

Speaking of downgrading, is there an easy way to revert to the previous version of the software?

I just restored my two ATVs to 5.3 by downloading the firmware and restoring it via iTunes after connecting the ATVs to my Mac via USB. That worked fine but they do now keep asking to upgrade so I'll need to make sure none of my well meaning family do the updates. 5.3 does solve the judder problem though.

I don't think Apple is still signing 6.0 but they are signing 5.3 so I downgraded to that. I can't remember if 6.0 juddered but I know 5.3 didn't as I'm running that now.

I downgraded both my ATV2 and ATV3 to 5.3 today (9th July 2014) because 6.2 is still lousy and it worked fine. They are both now judder free and I won't upgrade again until someone confirms that the issue is gone because I have so many files that are affected.

Can everything be done via iTunes (getting the 5.3 release and flashing your ATV with that) or do you first need to download 5.3 from some 3rd party/unauthorised site?

This, if it can be easily done, I might just go that route so I can use the ATV 3 in a bedroom or something atleast.

Went with a Roku 3 and using Plex, so much better and smoother for my main living room setup.

But would still like to make this ATV3 usable.

6.2 seems to have cured the streaming issues and slow loading issues I experienced with 6.1.1

I have 2 movies which I know the exact point where they start to judder and they play fine throughout now.

Girlfriend and kid just watched a 2 hour long movie via Apple TV 1080p streaming from my MBP, and it was completely stutter free. No audio sync issues either, which would usually happen halfway through the movie.

Seems 6.2 might of actually fixed my issues as well.

Will watch a couple more throughout the week and report back.

My ATV2 was running 6.2 and I had the juddering issues. Thanks to the great posts on here I have now downgraded to 5.3 and its running smooth as silk now :D

Hopefully it will get sorted one day with an update, but there is nothing in 6.2 that I will miss so its all good.

Could you post a few tips on how to do the upgrade: https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/1751871/

I for one would be keen to revert back to 5.3.

I am still having the slow image in version 6.2 :(

I wonder if Apple did this on purpose to thwart those of us that make our own DVD/Bluray rips? They seem to be taking their sweet time to fix it or they ignoring it all together.

Well at least my new LG smartTV have PLEX client and this solution actually works perfect all the m4v movies looks great and i dont have to remux anything

If that was their goal, I am sure they could have done a better job of it. :)

A.

Apple has introduced a number of issues playing video files lately. On Mavericks I can't play the .MOV files my ReplayXD helmet cam produces any more. They don't even quicklook, whereas they played perfectly on Mountain Lion and on Mavericks I have to use VLC to watch them now, or Quicktime 7 but Quicktime X can't.

The files I have on my ATV that stutter and stop were encoded with ffmpeg (lavf). They play fine on my iPhone, iPad, Macs and PCs, but cause the ATV to choke on anything newer than 5.3. Everything I've done in Handbrake plays just fine but I don't want to have to reconvert all the ffmpeg encodes so I'm sticking with 5.3 until it is fixed.
