Still got my Apple TV G3 but I just don't see the point now we have smart TVs.

The Samsung UI I’ve experienced works like trash.

My Sony TV is an Android TV but it seems I need to use the Apple TV to get accurate color reproduction with the color calibration available. It also lets my two full sized HomePods be a stereo speaker pair. The length of support for OS updates also makes these very viable options that seem to outpace the support length for the built-in OS.

I only use the built-in OS for the guide menu when watching OTA antenna TV.

My TCL Roku TV does not have an Apple TV attached. That’s the only device I feel is worth it both for privacy settings and for ease of use.

(LG WebOS TVs may be fine as well)

There may not be a point for you, but as you can see - the world doesn’t revolve around you as our experience our subjective and each person has a unique use case.

Can anyone tell me what the benefit of a "faster" Apple TV is? The existing 4K one is already very fast and I don't know anyone who games on an Apple TV

$130 for the cheapest model and $20 more for the $150 model gets you:

128 vs 64 GB
Ethernet port
Thread networking.

Let's be honest, this is kind of a dick move on Apple's part. Why not just release the $150 model for $130, or better yet $100? I think a lot more people would be interested in the device if they did that.

My lg oled has all the streaming apps so don’t ever use my Apple TV
Same here. We plugged in the AppleTV HD when we upgraded the TV but have hardly used it.

I *know* that the Apple TV box is better for my privacy than the built-in app, but the convenience of having everything set up in the TV is too hard to ignore.

Today, $149 gets you a 64GB AppleTV. Friday, $149 gets you a 128GB AppleTV.

to compete with PS5 / Xbox X

Why bother? It's not like Sony or MS is going to port to it if it's beefier and the lock-in on those platforms makes Apple's look like a joke. 3rd parties aren't going to port to it from those platforms either, the market of people who game on it is simply way different. Nintendo doesn't try to compete with them and has carved out a great niche for themselves, and I don't see why Apple wouldn't do the same.

What I'd really like is some way to automatically move games from the iPad to the ATV and vice versa in realtime. So I could be at home on the iPad and then start it on the ATV and pick up my gaming controller and go. Not casting, moving the game over to the other platform so I can hand the iPad to the kids. It would also be nice to easily send the game to the ATV so a friend can use the ATV and game controler while I play as second player on the iPad. This would give us Switch-like functionality with existing hardware.

Was watching the first embedded video review. Got very excited when he said an update was coming to add QMS VRR to get rid of the black screen when frame rates switch. This got me very excited, as I've hoped for this for a couple years. Very bummed when he said his LG OLED doesn't support QMS and I also have an LG OLED. Even more bummed that he said he isn't sure LG will even update older TV's software to add QMS.

Not sure if I'm missing something in my LG OLED, but I find it's way worse for content aggregation; on my Apple TV, I have all the services linked to the TV app then when I open it, I can pick any show and continue whereas on LG I have to go into each streaming service's app.

I don’t know about anyone else, but my “smart TV” will never be connected to the internet. I don’t need to be served ads and have my viewing activity reported by my TV to its manufacturer.
The only reason I have it connected is for software updates, not sure if there's a way to get them without connecting the tv to the internet

Wait apple dropped the price 50 bucks, doubled the storage and performance…and you’re calling them dicks?

Correct. At best it's shameless upselling. At worst what I can see happening quite a bit is someone buys the $130 model because they think it's on sale or something, assumes it has at least an ethernet port and ends up having to return it to the store. Just a lot of strange choices there.

How do you feel about the series S and series X?

What’s the deal with the HDR10 “feature” on this new box? My Apple TV 4K uses Dolby vision on my tv, which I believe to be a better or at least equivalent to HDR10+. Similarly I use Dolby atmos on my receiver over DTS audio. But why hold that for only the new hardware vs just updating the software for the Apple TV 4K?

It seems Apple is more and more using software locks to distinguish hardware, new iPads for example.

I think jailbreaking needs to make a comeback. Hackintosh on iPads if Apple won’t support it themselves.

Two things that don't look at all alike, that have clear physically visible differences, and clearly different hardware advantages are much different than nickel and diming someone over nearly identical products. PS5's two models have clear differences as well. What is your point?

That you’re not making a good point.

Basically suggesting because someone doesn’t do any research before buying a product. They are being scammed into a lesser model because “they think it’s on sale?” Even tho the msrp would show that it wasn’t on sale.

Apple sells the same shape MacBook with various tiers. Same with all their devices. So I don’t understand your underlying angle

Regardless if it's only a $20 difference what the hell is the point of the one other than to upsell you to the other? It's ridiculous.

Am I the only one that's never lost their Apple TV remote? I've had one since the first generation and can't say it's ever been lost. Always right where I put it.

Considering this upgrade only because the battery in my remote went to crap after just over a year. Now it wants to be charged nearly weekly, while the older version I gave to the girlfriend still lasts for months despite being years older. My TV does support HDR10+, so I suppose that's nice, though I'm not sure how much content actually uses it.

I ordered the 128GB version and it has not shipped yet. While this device may seem like a disappointment if you already have an Apple TV 4K, to those without one (me!) this seems like a solid upgrade from my current non-Apple device.

I’m not sure what else Apple can do to a streaming device such as this. It’s not a great experience for many apps, and it would be a completely different kind of device if it were to handle AAA gaming. I think the beefier processor is for connecting Apple’s rumored upcoming VR goggles as well as just consuming off-the-shelf available chips. Otherwise, a snappier user experience and a better casual gaming experience is a fine upgrade, IMO. (I’ll just be happy to have a device where the audio doesn’t lose sync every other day)
First thing when I get it will be to add Kodi to it.

It surely has the potential to be a console rival. On paper it is faster than the original Xbox One. It just needs the games.
