Same here. We plugged in the AppleTV HD when we upgraded the TV but have hardly used it.

I *know* that the Apple TV box is better for my privacy than the built-in app, but the convenience of having everything set up in the TV is too hard to ignore.
The one thing our FireTV destroys on is Alexa vs Siri. If I hold the speech on the Amazon Remote and ask to watch she actually plays it right off with NO BS. Why does Apple always ruin superior hardware with a crappy voice assistant???

Smaller, faster (yes especially with games), cheaper. It is a very nice upgrade from older (not 4K) version and a big bonus for future owners.

I wanted to buy one last year, I’m looking forward to this one.

Well, it’s $129 after all, to compete with PS5 / Xbox X at least two things would have to happen: a hardware push with an ”ultra” Apple TV version for gaming with say an M2 Pro chip with active cooling (and perhaps ray tracing hardware acceleration) at the PS5 price point; and a content (financial) push to bring IP and AAA titles from studios similar to the one they’ve done to build the Apple TV+ streaming service.

The Switch has hardware similar to an 2016 iPhone and is a success due to content. But Apple has refused to pay / finance ports and hasn’t launch or acquire first party studios either, so, no wonder it’s not competing.
Yeah, I think it’s silly for a reviewer to compare a $149 device to game consoles that cost 2-3x more and wonder why it’s not the same. Besides, Apple is more selling this as a set top box that also games as opposed to a game console that also streams. If it was primarily intended to be a game console, it would ship with a game controller and not a remote. You can get a remote for Xbox and PS, but those ship with controllers by default.
At this point I’m positive that Apple has no desire to compete with consoles. However, if you have Arcade and younger kids, it maybe be perfect for plopping them down in front of the TV for game time while preparing dinner. I myself am not any kind of gamer at all but enjoy the occasional Arcade game. Apple doesn’t seem to have any desire to really compete on AAA gaming, and that’s fine.
Yeah, it really has potential but they aren’t pushing it hard enough. Arcade does have some fun titles that my kids enjoy, but it would be nice if they had a bit more original content. Oceanhorn was a really good example of what Arcade can offer, but there aren’t many titles like that. Apple could use its money to start a Nintendo-like gaming environment and not worry about PS/Xbox tier power. It won’t happen until they make a box that can really handle the content though. I’m really surprised they haven’t pursued the gaming market more. It’s big business and doesn’t seem to wain under tough economic times.

The Samsung UI I’ve experienced works like trash.

My Sony TV is an Android TV but it seems I need to use the Apple TV to get accurate color reproduction with the color calibration available. It also lets my two full sized HomePods be a stereo speaker pair. The length of support for OS updates also makes these very viable options that seem to outpace the support length for the built-in OS.

I only use the built-in OS for the guide menu when watching OTA antenna TV.

My TCL Roku TV does not have an Apple TV attached. That’s the only device I feel is worth it both for privacy settings and for ease of use.

(LG WebOS TVs may be fine as well)

There may not be a point for you, but as you can see - the world doesn’t revolve around you as our experience our subjective and each person has a unique use case.
I agree. I have been resisting buying an Apple TV because my Sony A9 has Android TV built-in and lets me access all the apps I want (+ side load anything, so I can e.g. watch Hulu from the UK via a VPN that I find on the Play Store)... But Android TV is ridden with ads. The home screen is comically bad, it keeps advertising for shows on apps I don't even have installed. The interface renders at 1080p. And it never received any updates, of course, so no Google TV for me, I am stuck with Android TV 9 (it's a 2020 TV). So I might just throw 129 bucks at the problem one day.

The only reason I have it connected is for software updates, not sure if there's a way to get them without connecting the tv to the internet
I updated my LG CX OLED using a thumb drive. It did have to be formatted as NTFS in order to work though, which was weird. Luckily for me, my iMac runs Windows via bootcamp, so I was able to format it correctly.

Why not put an M1 or M2 in there and compete more heavily with Sony and Microsoft on gaming? Also, am I the only person who feels that the iPad and/or the Mac could benefit from an Apple TV app that is essentially the TVOS interface? And users would be able to control it either with the keyboard/mouse or gamepad?

This is very tempting. Great price, I have an amazon Fire TV that's fine, but the UI is a lot cleaner and the ATV operates a lot smoother than any other streaming box I've used.

I use my AppleTV as my media hub. Great simple and streamlined user interface, that I can use for ALL my streaming needs. It integrates into my system seamlessly, and the remote is simple yet has everything I need. And no, I’ve NEVER lost any remotes, and I think I’ve had just about all the AppleTV versions.

System setup: Receiver, ISF calibrated TV, bookshelf speakers and sub

To power on the system and I tell Siri to turn the TV on (or use the power button on the ATV remote). System powers on and I’m greeted with the AppleTV Home Screen. Done. To power off, I tell Siri to turn off the TV (or use the ATV remote). Can’t be any simpler than that.

I just don‘t get people using subpar junk out there. Just get the AppleTV and be done with it.

Because even with an M1 or M2 the Apple TV couldn’t compete with a Playstation or XBox. Those devices cost hundreds of dollars for a reason. They have top-of-line graphics cards, lots more memory and lots more storage. They’re essentially modern computers with a single purpose: gaming. Apple has no graphics capability that can even come close to competing with those machines for gaming. Apple would have to become a console maker and sell a $1,000 device to compete in a mature market and convince game developers to develop for Apple on top of all the other platforms. In other words, it’s not just a matter of slapping an M1 in the Apple TV and, voila, it’s an XBox competitor.

I am very happy with my ATV 4K 21. I love the simple, straight forward interface that has only the apps i need to watch whatever I want. The Google TV home page on my Sony TV is a pure mess. Looks like crap. Scrolling through all the crap on the screen is not smooth. Ads all over the place. Hard to navigate and find things especially in Google settings, which are located in different places neither of which is intuitive to find.

As for audio pass through, I don't mind how it is now as it plays Dolby Atmos and Dolby Surround without any issues and both sound great on my HT system. 4K HDR, whether Dolby Vision or plain HDR look fantastic as well. The only downside is that some streamers don't pass Dolby Vision thru the Apple TV, like Amazon or Fox Sports. But the HDR from Amazon looks very good and if I really really want to watch Amazon DV, I just use the Amazon app on my Sony TV. But some apps on the ATV are much better than the counterpart on the Google TV internal app, like ESPN. The ATV ESPN app allows the multi screen option which is not available on the Google TV app. So, all in all, I am very happy with the ATV 4K.
My lg oled has all the streaming apps so don’t ever use my Apple TV
Looking to sell it?

My Hisense tv uses Android TV and I totally agree with you.

That is the single most thing that would make me buy Apple TV without even blinking. Apple does not want you to use it to play ATMOS or DTS-X rips you have stored on your private NAS. Apple wants you to pay extra for those movies again and watch it through them.

Sorry for being a noob here, why is the non audio passthrough a problem for NAS? Is it the same if you use something like Plex?

Two words: Matter support.
That really doesn't "matter" until devices come with it too, and only then if Apple properly supported it and the device manufacturer properly supported it. With Apple track record of bleeping up every piece of software they touch, I not going to get excited about it until it truly works....

Today, $149 gets you a 64GB AppleTV. Friday, $149 gets you a 128GB AppleTV.
Yep. I just bought a Fire TV Cube 3rd gen for $99 on sale. It has a USB port that allows external memory which means it can store way more than 64GB if you need to. And it works with all the apps, unlike my ATV 4K 2017 running tvOS 16.1 which screws up with several apps. I'm afraid Apple has lost its touch.

Mostly interested to see if this solves the gapless playback issue on Dolby Atmos tracks on Apple Music (e.g. second half of Abbey Road album, most classical music where one track blends seamlessly/continuously into another with no pause). Also would be interested if this finally supports high-resolution audio on Apple Music. It was surprising that my old iPhone 12 could support high res lossless but the 2021 ATV4K couldn't.
