I love my Apple TV. Compared to my "smart" TV, it runs smoothly, gets updates for years, and has no ads. But I wouldn't buy another one. I only use my TV to stream my series and movies, maybe a few times a month. For the price and the frequency I use it, it's not worth it. Especially when you have a $300 TV. A streaming box for $129 is too expensive compared to the TV prices. On the other hand, if it also supported gaming, it would be worth it.
Like yourself, I only use the Apple TV for streaming things.

Recently I got new router as I was concerned that I couldn’t (easily) turn off WiFi & Bluetooth - the tv needs this to connect to the soundbar.

I nuked the internet connection at router level so everything can place nice together (work) without going online.

I’m astounded at the amount of times this tv (& soundbar) is trying to phone home, like we’re talking 4 times a minute, every minute, every day.

There’s no reason for it to do so, I don’t use any of the apps on the tv.

This alone is the reason to get an Apple TV combined with when u get a new tv, plug, play & you’re off.

As far as a camera goes, I’d like to see a first-party WiFi/Bluetooth option now that they’re designing their own Networking chip.

How about 4K 120Hz support?

120 is pretty much the perfect refresh rate.

24, 30, and 60 all divide evenly into 120, allowing you to watch pretty much any content with no judder, without having to switch refresh rates.
Even better: 240Hz with BFI.

You can pick up a 1080p 55" TCL LCD TV for under 300 bucks nowadays. Who is gonna buy an overpriced, one button TV from Apple?
We have a higher end 65" Sony 4K TV with Android TV and a complete app suite and plugging in an Apple TV box was a huge upgrade for us. The UI was so much smoother through the Apple TV and the streaming apps were much less buggy. Hulu would routinely freeze or stutter on the Sony's native app but never gave us any issues on the Apple TV.

Plenty of people will look at the built in OS of most smart TVs and say that it's good enough. Those people are not who the Apple TV is marketed towards.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: Apple TV needs an overhaul with multiple 8k HDMI in and one out with inputs becoming apps allowing it to sidestep the TV interface and “features” or lack thereof. Heck, sidestep the speakers even and make it a soundbar, they can cross it, HomePod, and the iPod Hi-Fi and call it “HomePod Hi-Fi. The Ultimate Smart Home Hub. Now showing on the big screen.” Or something silly like that.

If it has some quality AI upscaling that makes a noticeable difference and audio passthrough, it will be an instant buy for me.
