Because of the rising costs of streaming TV I am forced to factor in the price of the streaming box. TBF $129 or $149 over 5 years or so is not that much. It still hurts a lot more up front than the $49 I paid for a Chromecast 4K 3 years ago, still going strong despite it being discontinued.

I have the 1st generation AppleTV 4K and it’s still working fast enough for me even being 8 years old. I would like to buy a newer version and hold onto that one as long as I did with this one. My bedroom TV isn’t a smart tv, so streaming my with the AppleTV has taken the place of our new smart tv that we haven’t set up yet.

The power cord will be the only thing in the box:

"Many of our customers already own an Apple TV 4K and we feel this is the best way for them to purchase a new power cord while preserving the environment"
But for those who don't, Apple will sell you a 'premium' Apple certified power cord made from vegan plastic for the low low price of $150. We think you are going to need it......!

Better Siri - With a faster chip that supports Apple Intelligence, the next-generation Apple TV will support the LLM version of Siri that Apple plans to debut next year. Siri will be more like Claude or ChatGPT, which could lead to better Apple TV recommendations, the option to use voice commands to do more than before, better support for questions about actors and music in movies and shows, and much more.
Hopefully Apple will fix one of the main current issues with LLMs, which is that they often don't bother to check the latest information online about things you ask them about, but instead they sometimes still refer to their fixed database which can be a year or more old unless you explicitly ask them to. "I can't find anything about that actor or that TV show through 2024."

Dedicated hardware will always perform better then whatever they are trying to shoehorn into your TV, imo
And just as important in my book, the TVs throughout the house can all have the same navigation experience, despite being different brands/models of TVs (because different rooms have different TV needs). And even easy to take on the road to a vacation rental to have the same experience I am used to on a totally foreign to me TV.

Will be a small update with just a chip upgrade most probably whenever it comes. Think the price also will remain the same.

I think if Apple doesn’t announce it this Tuesday or Wednesday, or next week’s, they won’t release it this year :/. They've never announced an Apple TV this late before.

Even Google got rid of the Chromecast because every TV has this functionality built-in now, I would bet this product line is done, Not sure what the point of another generation would be
I’ve literally bought the Google TV Streamer, which is a direct successor to Chromecast, last week for my father-in-law’s birthday.

I know they wont but having the ATV in different colours would be interesting. It's a lifestyle product.

Too many black boxes which look harsh in the living room.
There are mounts you can stick to the back of your TV to hold ATV. I like mine, hides the box for a minimal view.
How about support for multiple remotes and Find My in the remotes?
The remotes have Find My technology, but it’s tucked away in Control Center.

" Apple could release the new ‌Apple TV‌ model before the end of the year in November or December, but at this point it's also possible we won't be seeing it until early 2026."

Did you tell your Mark Gurman about this? That he has to change his prediction for the twelve time?

What I want is the ability to toggle a VPN.

The folks who complain about a lack of vision will be the first to complain about a price hike. Folks who complain about price hikes will be the first to complain about falling margins if they have a 401k or mutual fund that holds AAPL.

that's contradicting, if there were a camera - it would be a significant re-design.
Having said that, imho a camera wold be an unnecessary and for me unwanted "feature".
There is no significant value to adding a camera on a setup box it will be a cool feature to begin with and then the affects will wear off for the general consumer

I think multiscreen sports streams from different apps is desirable. That might take some more horsepower and RAM.

It would be nice if they could crack a whip on the sub-standard apps. I feel like Youtube, Peacock and Prime among others are substandard.

contrast that with the NBA app which albeit still has its share of bugs/crashes but at least it uses what appears to be the same streaming functionality as Apple's ATV app. And thus it is a joy to get around in it.

Not sure what else I would need. The remote isn't perfect. Not in love with it. Miss the edge tapping of the old remote. I did a YTTV trial, not that I would sign up for it long term or anything, but I realized without being able to edge tap on the new remote you can't skip ahead or go back 10 seconds at a time quick enough. And it kills that functionality.
Would you like to now why these apps are substandard on Apple TV because it’s to do with investment from the company due to the amount that actually use the app on that platform

I wish Apple would make the top end Apple TV into a proper console, with an included controller and a game development and licensing effort at least equivalent to what the put into AppleTV+ content.

They have all this performance and synergy across the lineup, and yet it’s still better to look elsewhere for the best gaming experience. Tim Cook keeps looking for a new avenue of growth but can’t see the obvious path right front of his face.

I know people will point out that Apple’s never really done games, but we’re not in the power pc era where Macs trailed in performance, or the Intel era where bootcamp was a thing.

We’re in the Apple silicon era where Apple has made tremendous strides in performance and power efficiency to the point where they are leaders in the field.

We’re also in an era where Xbox is floundering and is ripe for displacement. Lastly (I hate this part, but) games are going to a services model, which is perfectly aligned with Apple’s priorities.

Microsoft has screwed things up so much that my gaming PC runs Linux. How has Apple done so little that an open source OS is a better option?

Hopefully Valve steps into the void Apple refuses to fill.
It’s not worth the investment for apple to get into the games industry as they will not want the overheads that go along with it
The apple chips are not made for dedicated games that’s why they look impressive on paper and general performance

Everyone got the new 2025 Apple TV leak wrong and so all the sites are rehashing speculative "could still launch" posts for content.
