The update failed for me. AppleTV states I have to connect it to iTunes. I did, and after downloading the firmware in iTunes it states the Apple TV could not be restored due to unknown error (9).

Great!! What now??

update: apparently, you need to connect the power cable while restoring. That worked.

My Apple TV was working fine and when I updated it crashed. Now the light is rapidly blinking and the USB to iTunes is displayed on the screen

Same problem here with the update. Need to borrow a USB cable from somewhere...

The Menu and Play button together trick didn't work either. The white light flashed rapidly but returned to the "plug me into iTunes" screen.

Ya, this happened to me. I used a Kindle cable (just micro-usb) to connect to my Mac and iTunes. It did the restore just fine, but didn't upgrade to the new AppleTV version. So after the restore I tried the upgrade again, cuz I'm crazy like that. But it worked fine the second time and all is well.

I haven't performed the upgrade yet...

Is there any word on the inclusion of the CW Network on the Apple TV? This was announced in mid-May but hasn't appeared yet. I'm in a over-the-air challenged area, and the CW Network is only broadcast on a secondary channel of the local NBC affiliate. It's not available from my satellite provider.

My family loves our Apple TV. I am really surprised how much we use it every day. I would have loved a UI facelift that was more consistent with iOS 7 but I think the interface is just fine. I prefer the Netflix interface on Apple TV to any other interface (include the web version of Netflix) I have tried.

Things I would like to see added to the Apple TV software:
* Amazon Prime Instant Watch
* A discount movie rental section (unless it is movie of the week you have to hunt to find deals)
* Lower prices on movie rentals (knock off about $1 on SD and HD movies and I'll probably never go back to RedBox)
* Introduce a TV episode rental scheme that is reasonable. I don't want to own them, I just want to watch them. "Owning" a movie or a TV episode on a heavily locked down DRM distribution system is kind of an oxymoron.

Updating my ATV 3 is taking a very long time. It's probably been 20 minutes and its finally restarting after step two.

The AppleTV would have to be already running a jailbreakable version of iOS. So no, you wouldn't be able to deliver a jailbreakable ipsw to the AppleTV with it.

Instead you would use the miniUSB socket to break the iOS version on it. If it is running the most current previous version or if you have already upgraded to today's 6.0 software, then no.

Bummer, but thank you for taking the time to explain.

Edit: I mostly asked becasue I don't own an AppleTV3 yet (just the origional Silver Apple TV 1) but if
I could wrangle JailBreak onto an Apple TV I'd buy several.

Thanks again

I'm with you on all of this. We've cancelled DISH network and just use AppleTV now, and are very happy with that choice. I'd love to see all of your wishes implemented, especially the last one. This should become the future of tv.

How to you get the new feature to work? I'm in my purchases items on the iTunes Store on my iPhone but when I select a movie it just downloads to the phone

I really do like the addition of itunes radio. I really like it so far and the quality streaming is solid.

I still think Spotify is the leader though and will keep my subscription for a while longer.

Hopefully they improved the caching performance... I hate renting a movie from iTunes and then being informed that it will be 3h:30m before I can start watching it... even with it set to 720p on a 25M connection. Fortunately I have no such issues with Netflix, Amazon, etc.

This sounds like an issue with you not being able to find the closest CDN to your physical location. If you are using third party DNS, try switching back to your ISP provided DNS servers.

After trying to connect my non-jailbroken ATV2 via micro-usb to my macbook pro and my imac via itunes, it doesn't come up as a device at all. Just got off the phone with tech support and they say my ATV2 is now indeed a brick and I have to go to an Apple store. #$%$$%$ This was working fine before the update.

never had it happen
I've had it happen a couple times — and I have a pretty fast connection usually but maybe it was running a little slow at the time. Whatever the issue was, it was telling me like 3 or 4 hours before I could play the movie.

My theory is that if your connection is a little slow, iTunes will force you to download/cache a bunch more of the file so it will play reliably — so as to head off the buffering issues you get with Netflix or Amazon if your connection gets congested. I could be wrong about this.

Anyway, that put me off iTunes movie rentals for a while (I just switched over to my old Roku and did Amazon instead). But I've since rented a few movies and bought some season passes from iTunes again and haven't had an issue.

Great update! Question on iTunes Radio...how do I like/dislike the current song on the list? No idea how...

Blargh. I left it updating when I went to the shop, and came back to a blinking light and a need to restore it through iTunes... I'm supposed to be watching Senna on Netflix...

My update broke also. First time this has happened to me. Wonder if this update is broken?

Did your restore work? I am trying mine now.

You're getting a free update and still complaining? And your complaint has to do with content purchased from third parties? What, is Apple your personal slave?

No it actually appears to be the other way around. We're apple's slaves. It appears we have to buy content ONLY from Apple, in order to use the device properly.

never had it happen

Never had that issue. When I do have an issue with streaming it usually takes a simple reboot of the cable modem. Not usually an Apple TV issue but rather a network issue. Just my experience YMMV.

When I had a 12Mbps uverse connection it was always within 30 seconds or so. Now I have a 30Mbps cable connection and it takes less than 15 seconds. Where are you located? You're sure you don't have any channel interference? Because that just doesn't make much sense. And Amazon isn't on AppleTV.

You have something wrong, then, and should contact apple for a solution. No problems like that with my AppleTV @ 20MB/s.

I've also just noticed this too. Within the past several day's it takes a while for movies to stream. I wonder if it has anything to do with the release of iOS 7 and the massive hit Apple's servers must be under?

never seen that and im on a crappy att uverse 10 m connection

Wow, I've never had such an issue. I have 20Mbp Comcast line.

I have several other OTT-capable devices: Tivo Premiere, PS3, ChromeCast, Roku, etc. It "could" be a connection problem, at least between me and whatever server the iTunes content comes from, but I have no problems with Netflix content on the ATV or with content streamed to any other devices.

The one thing that I haven't tried (since I hate triggering the GDMF 24-hour must-watch window if I can't watch it on my tv) is watching said rented movie on my iMac or Air to see if I get the same issue.

It is strange since the progress bar on the bottom of the screen appears to show that ~20% of the movie is cached, but it still tells me it is going to be 3+ hours before I can begin watching.

And it has worked fine in the past with this same network setup (Moto SB DOCSIS 3.0 modem, Netgear WNDR3700 Router) but it has occurred the last few times that I've tried to rent something from iTunes... so I assumed something got mucked up after a software update that would sort itself out.

Not a big deal since it is pretty rare that I rent movies from iTunes and I just watch what I do rent the next evening.

LOL, why would they let you stream content off their servers you didn't buy from them.

Sounded silly at first, but then I thought..
How cool would it be to have an iTunes Match for movies and tv shows. An extra $25 a year (just like iTunes Music Match service) to have all of my movies and tv shows in the cloud.

I understand about streaming from their servers....but isn't that the point of spending $80 on this device? To be able to stream your media? Why does everything have to be bought through iTunes.

----------

LOL, Apple has never cared about that, and they never will.

Lol sucks for me then. 80% of my library is acquired from elsewhere.

----------

You can still AirPlay music and movies stored locally on your iOS device to your AppleTV.

:) Good
