Would the CEO talk on the Apple TV and talk it up (a $1 billion business on it own) if it wasn't leading somewhere soon?

Most of us will be disappointed in whatever Apple releases as the next version because many Macrumours fans believe it to be a magic box full of potential. However, Apples hands are tied due to content restrictions and cable companies.

I'd like to see the Apple TV have a 32GB SSD and a router combined - I'd like it to be able to run iOS games and a UI overhaul. At WWDC I'd like the company to open up the Apple TV to developers. I can't think it there would be huge amounts of apps worth downloading like on the iPhone and iPad but I do think some developers could make some extraordinary apps.

The WWE channel is very much a sign of things to come in the future.

Clearly "content is king" remains the mantra for all of broadcasting.

There are definitely some good ideas there, but I can't shake off the idea that the ATV is so popular because it's cheap and readily available - those features you list aren't cheap additions, they'd likely raise the price significantly.

It's no accident the current ATV is that cheap because it's essentially a dumb terminal with few hardware features rather than a headless "smart" device (despite it does run iOS).

It's a hobby because much like a "beta" tag - it means that they don't have to update the hardware/software massively like people expect on computers and phones these days.

2014/2015 - From what I've heard in the industry is when Apple is going to open up the platform to (at least) channels like Roku has. I don't think anyone knows whether this will be a simple approval process and/or if it will be a pay to play deal with Apple. I am sure, regardless, if you are selling anything via your channel, Apple would want a cut (subscription fees).

I've heard mixed about apps coming to Apple TV - but it really shouldn't surprise anyone when/if it does.

AppleTV is not throttled!

"In a little known, but public fact, anyone who is on Comcast and using Apple TV to stream Netflix wasn’t having quality problems. The reason for this is that Netflix is using Level 3 and Limelight to stream their content specifically to the Apple TV device........."

Sounds like BS. As I understand, the problem is with passing data from Level 3 to Comcast. It's not like AppleTV boxes are connected directly to Level 3 network.

I'm trying to figure out of I should sell my ATV v2 before this new one comes out… but if I do, I'll have to buy the current one in the meantime or try to go without for who knows how long, lol. Actual first world problems.

2nd generation Apple TV's are going for close to $200 on Ebay right now. Sell it now and don't look back. Buy a refurb 3rd generation from Apple, then hold onto your profits until something new comes out.

App and 3rd party controller support would blow Apple TV adoption wide open.

Movies, check! Music, check! Apps and Games...

Huh? 5 million is not half of 1 billion. Or was that meant to say 500 million?

re-read.. 5 million units vs 10 million units.

----------

Enough already!!! Just release it!! I'm tired of getting c*ck-teased with these headlines, only to find it being another speculation or quote from an analyst!
I know...first world problems.

I'm no doctor but I recommend you find a girl....stat

I'd like to see it be a little more "open" before purchasing.

official support for Plex. More wide open acceptance of formats.

Tying me into iTunes for my content doesn't fly for me. I ended up going Roku, though I'm not overly impressed by it, it at least has support for standard DLNA and Plex on top of it's own channels.

But If i could have an AppleTV, I would preffer it, Especially for Airplay.

I for one, do not want to seee Apple make a TV set.
Tv's generally are not something people buy every year. An Apple TV would likely be a silly product with relatively low sales. Especially when people are paying thousands for TV's.
However, A $99 addon box to make Any TV an apple TV is great. you can upgrade it without replacing your TV.

No one cares you can't use it for Plex or some third party system. Apple TV is for Apple-ecosystem - iTunes and iCloud. They don't want you to restore it with a Plex system.

They release these killer stats and the stock goes down? Have they even advertised the Apple TV? I see commercials for chrome cast and Google Play and they can't match Apple. How is the stock market not minipulated again?

5 million apple tv units. $1 billion worth.

Let's make it more clear.

5 million units sold in 2012. 2013 doubles that to 10 million units sold, which equals to a billion dollar revenue for Apple.

10m times 100$ equals 1 billion dollars. Simple math.

Do you honestly think anyone on Wall Street is going to be impressed with that $1 billion business? C'mon. That would move Apple's overall needle about .01%. As soon as they announced that lackluster figure, Apple share price immediately went limp. I doubt even a $10 billion business would move Apple's share price up appreciably. We not talking about an unlimited growth potential company like Google. Every venture that Apple will ever do in the future has already been priced into the stock. I'm not going to buy an AppleTV until it has approved PLEX support although I might consider it if it plays off-the-shelf iOS games. So far, everything Apple does is only succeeding in driving the share price down further. And things never go well for Apple stock when Tim Cook starts with his "Apple will soon yada yada..." speech.

You must sooooo hate it when someone says something positive about Apple.

Nobody on Wall Street cares about this incarnation of AppleTV. It's profit margins are probably close to zero. The real news here is that there is no news about new AppleTV which has been factored into the current APPL price.

AppleTV sales below expectations

And... their stock is down! So this is bad news?!

Of course it's bad news. The analysts were expecting at least twice that amount from AppleTV. For $99, Wall Street expects at least one AppleTV in every house in the U.S. Apple didn't even get close. You're really not paying close attention to street expectations of Apple. Besides, AppleTV is not innovative enough.

most video providers use CDN's
netflix has been playing games for years with cutting their CDN contracts and signing cut rate contracts with level 3 and cogent and then crying network neutrality
