This is the reason I haven’t watched CODA. La Famille Belier was a wonderful movie I have seen (maybe 3-4 times) in Australia. I mostly refuse to watch English (USA) Remakes that commercialise (and often butcher) an idea stolen. I'll always watch the original where I can, and stick to it.
How many people outside of Australia have heard of this? What proof do you have that CODA was stolen from this?

Filmmakers must stop selling their movies to distributors/streaming services!!!

Let the audience seek them out for themselves as God intended!!!!!

If a film doesn’t have distribution, how will audiences be able to seek them out? Do you really think all of our favorite films would have still gotten made if they didn’t have distribution deals?

It's sarcasm lol
it was to a response about how this is not really Apple original because they just paid for the rights

I was responding to another user post — how do you know what their intention was?

Doesn’t every film distributor pay for film rights and slap their name on the film — “[Distributor] Presents…” — how is this any different?

Amazing, amazing film. I loved it and I loved seeing a streaming service besides Netflix accomplish this first.

I have to ask.. how is something an “Apple Original Film” if it was created entirely without Apple’s input? Semantics I guess, but still.
How is a direct copy of a French movie an amazing film? Must be all those nights translating a dairy into a fishing business, and transferring the scene to North America. The script kiddies had no work to do at all once the translator had finished. Apart from that a full on, direct copy.

It isn’t a bad copy, it has a lot of the same heart as La Famille Belair, but original it most definitely isn’t, and I really don’t think it deserved a nomination. In fact most of this year’s movies didn’t.

Is this remake better than the original - or just the same movie with the name Apple+ added to it?

I know! Have people forgotten their chapters and verses?

"Thou shalt not stream thy movies."

Apple has never been about making the most. They focus on making the best. And that applies to their services and the amount of content on it.

Apple TV+ has a relatively limited content library. Why? Because Apple either produces or opts to buy rights to content that in its view, amplifies important topics.

They could quite easily snap up a whole lot of content if they so chose to do so. But they pick content through a different lens than other streaming platforms.

“I hope that this film and Apple’s powerful support will help kick down some doors standing in the way of inclusion and representation and pave a path for more stories that center characters from the Deaf and Disabled community. The world has waited too long for these stories to be told. Now is the time. No more excuses.” - Sian Heder, director of CODA

And it’s fair to say, that with such a limited content library, Apple has been able to amplify and market a smaller range of must see content than would be possible on other streaming services.

And this particular movie? It shines a spotlight on a disabled community that is often overlooked. So I think we should welcome that rather than debating over fanboism.
The academy awards literally stated that they would never ever have movies that come from streaming platform win the best picture award, if it wasn’t for COVID half the movies wouldn’t be there. Apple just got lucky, the rules have definitely changed and are here to stay, 3 years ago streaming and academy wouldn’t be in the same sentence

I guess quite a few. It was in the world wide release of the French Film Festival ( which is a festival that travels the world), the number of awards…

Proof? The director (Sian Heder) stated at the Sundance Film Awards that she spoke the director of the ORIGINAL movie (Philippe Rousselet) who owned the rights of the movie. Rousselet sought her out to do a remake. Considering France is the birthplace of cinema, you might realise they make some pretty amazing movies and many of them better than some of the commercial rubbish that comes from Hollywood

I believe that the key is that the Streamers give these movies also a limited cinema release, to make them eligible.

I refuse to watch this copycat as an “Original”.

Because I don't want to destroy the magic of the original songs and the atmosphere of the movie in my mind..

Not directly, but if Apple continues to buy award winning movies and shows, ATv will become the service known for having award winning movies and shows. If they do that for a few years, it won't matter how many cookie-cutter shows Netflix or Hulu can grind out.
That is impressive to a very small slice of people. I think Criterion collection has a streaming service so most the people who care would probably migrate to a service catering to that interest.

Both Netflix and Amazon have had shows nominated.

None of these streaming services ever directly create any shows or movies. You understand that right? Streaming services hire show runners and producers who hire the creative teams. Some streaming services have more input than others on production details but it’s not like Netflix or HBO or Apple execs are sitting down to write, direct and edit these shows and movies. They are simply platforms but the platform that makes the best choices in talent and IP is the winner at the end of the day so this is a big win for Apple.
Apple bought the right to distribute this AFTER it was shown at a film festival. That is what people are referring to. They saw a movie and bought it and it won. No creative choices were made on their part.

I have no idea what that even means what you said, which doesn’t make much sense.

But from my understanding, the Oscars allegedly had record-breaking numbers in terms of audience viewings. So there’s that.

I didn’t even know it was going on til I heard on news someone got punched. Lol.

What will get people curious enough to make sense of apples garbage app will be sports streaming. Bonus if they also ever start buying content worth watching.

I'll have to watch the original soon. I hadn't seen the original available yet on the streaming services though when I looked.

No. Apple did not finance this movie. They bought distribution rights after it was already financed and completed.

Interestingly, Apple bought worldwide distribution rights, after other companies had already bought international distribution rights. How does that work?
dunno how this thing is going worldwide, but here in italy it’s not included in tv+. you have to buy coda for 10€ and no rent.
Ah, I guess that is how that works. Apple's "worldwide" distribution rights aren't actually worldwide.

Great for Apple, more exposure for their Apple TV+ service. They have some really good shows, movies, and documentaries. Reading some of the comments are funny, some award worthy in their own right. Hate has become a virtue for some, especially in cases where your relevance is non existent.

Pff. Apple just bought the streaming rights, they didn't produce anything. It's like buying an Oscar. Give credit to the actual producers, director, cast and the rest... not Apple.

I wonder how Bezos feels about this. Bezos paid $8.5 billion for MGM to be acquired by Prime Video, yet Apple buys a single movie for $25 million and gets to be the first streaming service to have a movie win an Oscar.

You don't keep subscribers with a single movie, or a few movies. You keep subscribers by offering an ever extensive catalogue of content so that the majority of people can find something they enjoy every time they run the app.

With 54 shows and 18 movies in total, you can basically see everything you want on Apple TV+ within your free period.

Even though I never see La Famille Belier film and I don't want to since they use hearing actors to play Deaf characters. CODA already far far better than French film since they use REAL Deaf actors for Deaf characters and can see REAL sign language (not hearing people only learn sign for their lines and normally looks unnatural).

Plus there always be remake of films everywhere. I don't care this is remake from French film and I enjoyed CODA film.
