Apple TV+ Price Increase Announced

This made me switch to Apple One. I should have before. I had to have a long conversation with ChatGPT about whether it was the right thing to do, and it clearly is.

I tried Apple TV+ a couple of times when it was a free trial just to see if they made any positive changes. They haven't so I dropped it. Their programming is boring, predictable, and too socially progressive for my taste.
They can raise the rates as high as they want because I don't like it even when its free.

Even their "Apple TV" platform is getting stale. They make "wonderful" enhancements according to Tim Cook, and I challenge anyone to actually point out what they are. Ahh, Eww..."Liquid Glass" on Apple TV menu.....couldn't care less. Change the remote and maybe I'll buy another one or make the device a usb stick like your competitors. Nope....black box that looks and acts the same way it did 7-10 yrs ago. (kind of like the iPhone).

I think that Apple's goal here is to encourage people to switch to the "one" bundle.

I just did a few weeks ago because I had a premonition that this would happen sooner or later. Running the old numbers, Apple clearly makes the bundle more attractive if you want at least three of the services plus family sharing.

I get Apple TV+ for free from T-Mobile. We watch a few things offered by Apple but it’s not our go-to channel or streaming service. I suspect that if T-Mobile didn’t offer it as a perk, I’d cancel it. But then, I feel the same way about Netflix and a number of other streaming services. My wife feels otherwise.

Apple One? Don’t want it and don’t need it.

I would like to see a subscription model where the price actually goes down at certain intervals as a reward for long time loyal customers. As long as you continue your subscription then you stay at the lowest price. If you unsubscribed then you start back at the higher price.

I'm sure there's reasons against this but all I see is prices going up for the same thing I'm already getting.

Cell companies are doing that now with the "PriceLocks"

Everybody is jacking up the price. Looks like I have some tough decisions to make. Peacock I'm looking at you.

My 55+ plan also includes Netflix (with ads) and I'm enjoying the freedom to leave good shows unmatched on ATV+ and Netflix until a future date. Until I switched to this plan, I would subscribe to one service for a month about once year, and burn through the shows.

P.s. Netflix with ads is not as bad as I was expecting. There are few of them, often very short, and not every show has all the ad breaks.

Oh Apple TV....

Counterpoint: $12.99 for a month, once or twice a year, is a pretty good value if you like a few shows that they offer.

It's probably just me, but I only tolerate ADs when the movies/tv content is free (like on PlutoTV or Tubi).

...and sports, as that's unavoidable.

But even with Sports, whenever my schedule permits, I record and get behind live by an hour or so and skip all the AD breaks and I'm usually caught up to "live" right about at the end of the game.

As it is, we now have to tolerate incessant gambling ADs during the game ... and even subtly coming out of the mouths of the announcers. It's awful.

Exactly. But the intrusiveness varies by service. I received a free month of Prime and paid the couple bucks extra to get the very obnoxious lengthy ad breaks removed while I enjoyed the shows on my list.

I really like ATV+ shows, so would never ever tolerate ad breaks during their shows like Slow Horses, for example.

I’ve begun weening myself away from streaming altogether. I don’t think that streaming is necessarily a bad deal, but I have real trouble wading through the piles of garbage trying o find treasure. There’s so, so much bad TV being made right now that it’s nearly impossible to find something worth watching. It’s also making more sense at times to just buy a TV show on blu-ray (when it’s available), or buy a season on digital streaming, rather than subscribe to an expensive streaming service just to watch one show.

I understand the concept of inflation but +30% ?
Severance got 27 Emmy nods this year. Every above the line cast/crew member is likely asking for more money behind the scenes.

The problem with AppleTV+ is that there isn't a lot of audience crossover between shows with the exception of sci-fi fans. Though with the success of shows like Severence, The Expanse and others recently, I think the average TV viewer is more of a SciFi fan than they care to admit.

Apple today raised the monthly price of its Apple TV+ streaming service to $12.99 in the U.S., according to 9to5Mac's Benjamin Mayo.

Apple TV+ cost just $4.99 per month in the U.S. when it launched in 2019, but the price has now increased three times. The price went up to $6.99 per month in 2022, and then to $9.99 per month in 2023, and now the service costs $12.99 per month. The latest price increase applies to select other countries too.

An annual subscription to Apple TV+ will continue to cost $99 in the U.S., and Apple One bundle prices are not changing, the report said.

The new price is effective immediately for new Apple TV+ subscribers, but various free trial options remain available. For existing subscribers, the price increase will take effect 30 days after their next renewal date, the report said.

In a statement shared with 9to5Mac, Apple attempted to justify the price increase by noting that it has continued to expand its library of original content, and it touted the value of its Apple One plans with multiple Apple services.

Many other streaming services like Disney+ and Netflix have raised prices in recent years.

Well, I stopped my subscription two months ago and I switched to a more affordable streaming service.
