Sometimes if feels like this in iOS too.
They found the bevels and emboss sliders.
Yep .. and instead of just screwing around with it for fun, and then deleting the files because they were gaudy and unattractive, as many of us did in our youth, they're rolling out the look ecosystem wide for a multi trillion dollar company.

So now Apple TV refers to:
- A streaming service
- A streaming device
- A streaming app
Funny, I've had a couple of Apple TV boxes and subscribe to Apple TV. I never noticed a + next to the name until now. Did it ever mean anything?

I agree this is just terrible, they could call it retro but yes this is just like I would have produced in the late nineties
Explain to me why you would make your STB and streaming service the same name?
Seriously, just put the streaming guts to a separate app and give us back the Videos app. I only want to use it for watching local video files I uploaded to the device on an airplane; I don’t want to be bombarded with ads for the streaming service.

I would say that would be the "series" of devices. You would have the (Apple) HomeTV, the HomePod and the HomePad. From there they can expand, like for example HomeMesh for a new gen of AirPorts.
100% -- takes me right back to screwing around in PS in the very early years.
This reminds me of that time Hewlett Packard Enterprise did an extensive project to figure out their new logo and rebrand, and all they came up with was a green box and connecting the two Ts in Hewlett. When it was presented to me, it was explained that the connecting of the letters was to symbolize them connecting with their clients. I’m surprised I wasn’t mistaken for a slot machine with the way my eyes rolled.
Now they did it again in June by changing it to HPE, and said things like “This shows we are a partner that unlocks your ambition – as a leader, a doer, a visionary or a changemaker,” and that is shows “We’re in this together and we want to do everything we can to make us both successful.” 🙄

Disney+ rebranded to just Disney, etc.
And we just got Liquid Glass, but now Apple TV is being represented by a permanent Rainbow Glass?

The + signifies the subscription-based streaming service, and this was adopted by many companies. Disney, and many more.
The only thing that never worked for me is that it's strange to have the word "Home" used in business settings.

This would make sense. Adding it to a soundbar actually would make it a relevant product. Right now Apple TV is only for people with (now quite old) old TVs that don't have smart features, and Apple fanatics that care a lot about the interface and Apple ecosystem.
