"now on Apple TV" but not like the box you bought ages ago, the streaming service and you need to open the Apple TV app to subscribe to Apple TV on your Apple TV because otherwise you only have access to content on your Apple TV that isn't actually an Apple TV show

I think the new box will be called:

Apple Theater
Apple HomeTheater
Apple tvPod
Apple HomePod TV
Nah! More like Apple TV Pod pro max and Apple TV Pod pro

There will also be the Apple TV Air. The Air will be a USB-C stick that you will have to plug in your TV with the Apple HDMI to USB-C dongle (sold separately). The Dongle won't be HDMI 2.1 so it won't support Dolby Vision and HDR 10. For these, you will need a pro unit. The Pro will have the same form factor as the actual Apple TV and will support Dolby Vision and HDR 10+. It will also have a new screen saver that will take advantage of the formidable advancements of the A17 chip. The Pro Max will be about the same as the Pro but it will be thicker and will have more storage but it will be useless to know how much since the OS never tells you how much you have left anyway. It will also support 8k video at 30p only when an iPhone 17 pro or pro max or later is connected to it via the new usb-c to Apple TV Pod connector to watch the videos you have filmed with the Apple camera App.

Now take that John Proser!

This would make sense. Adding it to a soundbar actually would make it a relevant product. Right now Apple TV is only for people with (now quite old) old TVs that don't have smart features, and Apple fanatics that care a lot about the interface and Apple ecosystem.
I disagree. The Apple TV is one of the few streaming devices, including the built in smart tv interfaces, that doesn’t slow down and lag frequently. I’d rather set up my tv as a dumb tv and use an Apple TV than use manufacturer interfaces. This doesn’t even address the data with which your tv phones home (ever read the privacy policy of your smart tv?).
An Apple TV will have a place for a while to come I imagine.

So, going in line with the new Apple TV hardware being a home device, Apple could redefine their whole home line.
HomePod - Speaker for music.
HomePod mini - small speaker for music
HomePod Pro - The New Apple TV with all internal updates and camera, including your ultimate Home Hub. (connect HomePods for front speakers and HomePod minis for surround sound)
HomePod Touch - all in one home device with screen to control your home from any room (includes, build-in speaker)
HomePod Greet - doorbell
HomePod Sight - security cameras (interior and exterior)
HomePod Dial - Thermostat

What’s with all the duplo and rainbow colors Tim? Not everyone wants rainbows displayed around their house just because you do. Orange iPhone pros? Why not keep products with professional colors and spend the money on relevant software updates. A little better microphone in my beloved iPhone air would be another good use of the extra money.

These are digital icons for apps and services, not items that will be "displayed around (the) house." At least as far as the story noted. Apple could start branding their set top box this way, but that doesn't seem likely.

If you don't like colorful devices, don't buy them. They still make non-orange iPhones.

And if you just don't like rainbows, that's another matter. 🌈

I don't think it will confuse more than today, those who know the difference will likely understand from context what is referred to, and those who don't will not anyways.

But I would believe that future "Apple TV"-devices could be rebranded as many others also think. The current device has a pretty powerful chip to be just a simple set-top streaming device, and it would make sense that it will be rebranded to show it will do more to encourage the development of more apps and more importantly games. The "Apple TV"-device has also been used as a hub device for Apple Home integration. So a more generic "console"-device will maybe be the result eventually.

There are no dedicated music devices anymore from Apple, but the app is called Music, and streaming service Apple Music, and on the Apple devices the app is also only called TV (eg. not Apple TV).

I think that TV as a term is also connected too much to the idea of scheduled broadcasting, but the Apple TV trademark is ubiquitous now, so it won't make sense for it to go away. Although people do buy "TV"'s to watch on demand streaming, so there is also the actual display device as well.

If we get an Apple Entertainment console or Apple Hub or Apple Home, who knows.

Didn't it get more confusing now though?
There's a paid subscription called Apple TV which you can access via an app called Apple TV, but maybe you'll have to buy a hardware box called Apple TV if your television doesn't offer it in its OS.

(Side note, Tim Cook insisting on calling every single product or service Apple XYZ makes the "i" branding of the Jobs 2-era seem downright acceptable.)

At least they don't call it all Apple Watch.

Tim Apple must be betting on that rainbow logo making everyone forget about his sycophancy to the hateful orange menace in the white house. In reality his fans will probably just call Apple woke 😂

You mean that plausibly-deniable shimmer? Hadn't actually noticed until you mentioned it.

Explain to me why you would make your STB and streaming service the same name?

Maybe they're about to rebrand the box? Maybe as part of the hardware refresh some of us have been waiting for? But at least we know they've given up on partnering for an actual line of Apple TVs.
For now.
Though if they make the rumored homepod-with-screens big enough...

Typical exciting Apple update. Remove a “+” and call it vibrant….oh and the price increase will be following soon. 🥴

No, right now the aTV is for people who never want their smart tv to touch the internet, ever, and people who have a smart tv where the smarts suck (most of them).

And most people would prefer it not replace their sound system.

Can Apple coordinate with the government and sanctions any nations with piracy sites? It's incredibly demoralizing to see thieves have access to quality Apple TV programming, without helping pay for it.

I can't tell if that's a serious suggestion but it's funny either way.

It wasn't just technology that cause the proliferation of piracy, it was seeing the western world go from largely being run by corporations to almost entirely - everything in sight bought up and squeezed for profit no matter what the cost to society. So maybe Apple's "content" is good enough to pay for but, being one of the largest corporations in the history of the world, they are part of the overall problem and, in my opinion, absolutely deserve to have their **** stolen at ever turn.

At least with iBranding, it was easy to turn up in a search engine. Searching for help on photos isn't nearly as useful as searching for help with iPhotos.

I’d be happy if all streaming services (and tech in general) just dropped the +. Streaming services aren’t a plus or extra any more, they’re just the norm.
