Maybe I'm getting old, but it occurred to me that my original Mac Plus screen (512x384) wouldn't be able to display these icons in their entirety.

I feel like very few people use Automator?

I'm not trying to start a fight, but I've only used it a few times for the kind of tasks it's designed for, and otherwise I just find it's easier to just do whatever it is I'd be asking it to do.

That said, I also feel like it's used less than Exposé had been or Front Row, two great tools Apple decided weren't useful enough :( .. and I did know a lot of people who used exposé, at least...

I've used it here and there. Lots of cool things you can do with it. Coupled with AppleScript it can be a very powerful tool.

Some ideas http://mac.appstorm.net/how-to/applescript/10-awesome-uses-for-automator-explained/

So why would they bother including this stuff in a Lion update with Mountain Lion just around the corner? Unless maybe they plan on shipping a Retina display Mac before Mountain Lion actually ships.

they'll get rid of the super drive and replace it with a bigger battery to take care of the retina graphics

I agree. Something is coming out before Mountain Lion or this is pointless.

I remember when I first got a Mac that I thought Automator was a game.
As cool as it is and I've used it a lot, I still wish it was a game!
Something to do with robots and pipes.

Big whup. I don't see THAT much of a difference between the two bots. The detail should be a big jump, not just a slight one.

Are you blind...? Darker arms and pipe, a different style of 'eye', less glossy overall. It doesn't look like a Powermac G4 anymore.

When they changed the iTunes icon, I believe there were a lot of complaints that it was TOO drastic a change...

What about Dev Tools?

So, does this mean we'll also be seeing an update to Icon Composer in the near future, or at the very least, with the 10.8 Dev Kit? Currently, IC's maximum supported resolution is 512 x 512.

Granted everyone is discussing an icon design here.. think of how great it could have been if Microsoft had designed it for their new Metro interface in Windows 8!

/sarcasm

I threw together a quick idea of what it would look like in metro for giggles...

what if for whatever reason u want/need to downgrade to Lion on your new retina supported mac book. would kinda make sense having retina ready icons for those scenarios

Aye Aye Aye!!

I "SEE" the differences, but to me, the new image doesn't look much aesthically better than the older one. In other words, "Big whup."

I don't think Apple makes plans for you needing to downgrade operating systems. Not saying you're wrong, just seems a bit unlikely that Apple is putting work into this for a "just in case this guy doesn't like Mountain Lion" situation.

What it looks like and how aesthetically pleasing it is is really secondary to the fact that is now a retina icon....

If Apple can buy a retina iPad display, they should be near to a 13" macbook air retina display. The next step, a 15" retina display.

I think they simply reduced the reflection amount is all. Makes it look cleaner IMO. Next they should change the Screen Sharing icon so it doesn't look like two Windows screens.

Seriously? It has a completely different type of material / reflection altogether (sharper reflections, more defined environment light source). It's even a different model than the previous. I like the new.

The current version (which ships with XCode 4.3) already supports 1024x1024. There's a button for it at the bottom of the window.

Wee Haw about Automator's icon. It's one of the most pointless looking icons in OS X. An assembly line icon showing an automated sequence would have made more sense.

If you were looking at it on a retina display you should see the big difference (and if the image shown had not been shown downgraded to suit a non-Retina screen)
