I feel like very few people use Automator?

I'm not trying to start a fight, but I've only used it a few times for the kind of tasks it's designed for, and otherwise I just find it's easier to just do whatever it is I'd be asking it to do.

That said, I also feel like it's used less than Exposé had been or Front Row, two great tools Apple decided weren't useful enough :( .. and I did know a lot of people who used exposé, at least...

I like the concept of automator, and there's been a few times when it really has been quick and helpful, but I always feel like I end up having to add in a bunch of my own Applescript and by the time I've done that, I may as well have scripted the other tasks too. I'm not necessarily faulting Apple, I wish move vendors (including apple) would add more automator actions from their apps, and make them flexible with options, good variable handling, etc...

Well at least we might get a new mac before Mountain Lion, I don't see why Apple would put those resources in Lion updates if the hardware supporting it only arrives once MLion is the standard.

Unless of course they release a HiDPI Thunder Bolt Display (that would annoy the heck out of the Mac Pro crowd since their machine of choice still hasn't been refreshed for TB).

perhaps its just me, but the original automator icon looks far better rendered in terms of shadowing and reflection detail

Agreed. Also, the new one's geometry has less detail (e.g., the head bumps) and looks kinda oddly balanced... Lacks polish.

I'll believe that when all icons are updated. Doing a few here and there suggests to me though they envisage having Retina Macs in the future, we are not there yet.

As someone looking to do a little more gaming after my next upgrade, I'm hopeful these higher resolution screens scale down nicely when they're at half-resolution (and I'm sure they more or less will).

I'd probably play more games on my current machine if it weren't for performance issues, and that operating outside of native resolution always looks really ugly to me.

Ah, good! Now I can finally use application icons in my custom wallpaper and other graphics without stretching them too much!

Is it possible to include retina icons in Apple's Icon Maker (or whatever the tool that comes with Xcode is called...)?

I know this is petty but seeing the new automator icon: I like the old one better! The new one reminds me of the icons you see in those fake antivirus banner ads that tell you your computer has a virus. XD

That, and white+chrome is sexy. White+black not so much :\

Automator has not only seen new HiDPI icons appear in OS X 10.7.4, but the icon itself has also undergone some tweaking.
Oh thank freaking god they got to this! Finally, a good night's sleep will be at hand. That ugly automator icon was at the top of my list.

Seriously Apple? Maybe one of the iOS coders can go to the cupertino basement and give that 2 person OSX team a hand with other things?

So the icons will be higher res than my old computer's entire screen.

Overkill 9000.

Finally...they 've ruined the eyesight of a generation with the untreated glass and its reflections as well as the ever increasingly smaller font on each increasing screen size.

The question though remains, retina or not, are we ever going to able to have a minimum of customization in the os's text like windows has had since time immemorial by now?

Not to say something important here but I heard from a trusted source I-M that some Apple exec said Retina display is too lite for our macs.

Am I the only one who thinks a retina MBP (or infact any computer) would be a really bad idea? It's great for the iPhone and iPad where people are designing for a device that they know all about, and it's also different because the screens are both fairly small in comparison to the average computer screen, but a laptop with a super hi-res screen would just be a baaaaaad idea. Designing for one would be hell, every single application would have to be redesigned or the application would take up much less space in the screen, making usability an issue. As well as this, designing (web design, graphic design) etc. which are all popular with mac users would be much more difficult as it would not be clear what the actual thing would look like on a normal screen! I think it's gonna happen eventually and we will see a retina display on a MBP or something (like with the iPad, a hi-res icon was found of the bookmark thing on iBooks) but I definitely think it's a bad idea. Just saying ^_^

"Apple Tweaking More Icons", or "Apple Re-arranging the Deck Chairs"?

Seriously - wouldn't more Apple OSX users be happier if Active Directory support went from "sometimes works" to "mostly works"? Or if CIFS support improved to "mostly works"?

Or, should Apple OSX users read the tea leaves and look for another platform?

If it's not an Itoy, Apple doesn't seem to care anymore.

Retina Macs are not a bad idea. Like when the iPhone 4 was released, apps were pixel doubled until developers tweaked it to enable the higher resolution. It still looked just as fine as before, just not as detailed until it was updated.
