I guess I should have stuck with my first prediction of A16 and 6 GB after all. However, the AI people had me convinced it was gonna get A17 and 8 GB.

Anyhow, it's nice to see there has no price increase here in Canada, yet it has gotten a base storage upgrade to 128 GB. I'm in. I'll take the (presumably) 50% increase in RAM and 100% increase in storage at the same price. Perfect to replace my kid's 2 GB / 64 GB iPad Air 2.

So I did well to buy the Air M1 Cellular for 600 euros six months ago… This start from 579, cellular version (in Italy), what is the point to buy it?
Well with the M1 you get Apple Intelligence. A P3 wide color. And… that’s all I can think of.

Plenty powerful for a $350 base iPad. It's a lot of performance for the people using it for consumption. Yes, it won't do the AI stuff (but aren't there many commenters here complaining about AI?), but that's not what this is for. It's a basic device for people who just use it mostly for reading, consuming media, and things like that.

Also, the cost is inflation adjusted $240 (2010 dollars), to compare to the original $500 iPad. That's just to point out how much machine you get for the price.
Exactly, I have the iPad 9 and it’s perfect for what I use it for. Mostly at night reading and watching TV. It’s perfect.

As the least expensive iPad, one should not be expecting much more than the minor chip upgrade and doubling of base memory. It will come with the latest operating system with all of its foibles. If you want all the options, then pay almost six times more for a M4 11" iPad Pro.........

11” screen, Supports the Apple Pencil, No Apple Intelligence. I see no downside.
Abysmal screen with no HDR support, non-laminated, no wide color gamut. That's a major downside. They could AT LEAST laminate the display, give it 90hz, and give it HDR 500 support, but they throw the same old (and I do mean old) screen at this thing. Frustrating!

The A16 doesn’t support it. It’s A17 Pro and up. Probably low on RAM too. But it’s still a much better buy than the previous gen with the 64GB starting storage. The previous chip was starting to age, that was from the iPhone 12. It’s getting dropped from software support any time now too. A boring but needed refresh.
The A16 would most likely support Apple Intelligence if bumped to 8GB of RAM. The Neural Engine in the A16 is more powerful than the ones in the M1 and M2, which are identical to the A14 and A15's Neural Engines, respectively. RAM is the limiting factor here.

Apple Intelligence is so garbage that the bean counters at Apple were like "yeah we wasted money in the 16e giving them 8GB RAM for free, let's not make that mistake again, coming up on 3 year old chip and 6gb it is"

I assume that this doesn't support Stage Manager and External monitors?
Apple requires iPad Air or iPad Pro for Stage Manager.

The good news is that Apple doesn't generally provide OS security support based on chip generation. It provides OS security support based mainly on date of release, meaning that an A16 iPad will likely get just as long OS security support as an M3 iPad Air.

I wonder if part of the logic for not having it be capable of Apple Intelligence is to reduce the amount of users/devices that need to use it and thus the infrastructure that Apple needs to have in order to support all of it.

Good update, it fixes the biggest issue with the previous iPad, namely storage. I like that they upped the ceiling on storage too for those that have big(ish) photo libraries they want to store on the iPad but don’t need anything fancy. It’s not the iPad for me but that’s totally fine, I’m sure it’ll sell well like the base iPads typically do.

No, the logic is most iPad users don't need 8 GB RAM or A17, so they may as well just cheap out on the base model. But frankly, it's not even cheaping out, since they they doubled the storage and likely increased the RAM by 50%. Arguably, that is MUCH more important than AI per se.

As mentioned, 6 GB A16 was actually my original prediction before all the AI hoopla, but then the AI pundits incorrectly convinced me otherwise.

im genuinely surprised here.

To bring out a new model of anything now that *doesnt* support Apple Intelligence?

I mean, taking away the arguments of whether AI is useful or not....

Of all of Apple's current models - the base iPad is by design the only thing apple makes that isn't compatible?
