They have to pay the movie stars somehow. If a designer needs three of these, that's nearly $20K. $3K just for monitor stands. I would guess pros will be looking elsewhere for monitors and stands.

How can there be a cheap version of what is essentially an ultra high-end 6K display that’s squarely catering to video professionals who need to edit in 4K?

The “cheap” versions are the iMac 5K and the iMac Pro.

I have a feeling they will release a new line of premium displays aimed at the consumer market.

Can’t wait to place my pre order.

Does anyone know if apple released a date?

I'd wait for some review before sinking significant cash into an order.

Have you seen how much work apple put in to the stand alone?

That stand is gorgeous.
Won’t be surprised if some customers purchase it to use with other displays.
I doubt that magnetic mount is going to work with other displays:

Effortlessly attaches and detaches for quick and easy transportation. The puck-shaped magnetic connector is designed to attach to the back of the display and locks the Pro Stand and the display together. To detach, simply unlock the slider and tilt the display far back to release the magnets, then lift the display off the Pro Stand.“

Stunning Display. But for sure not cheap. Not sure yet if it is worth the price. Nevertheless they might come out with a smaller and cheaper one so kudos to the development and work they put into it. You gotta start somewhere.

If you mean the Mac Pro then no, because no one was allowed to touch it or see it working.

I’m taking about the xdr monitor with the stand.

Might pick up a Mac Pro next year or the year after won’t really have much use for it this year.

way too expensive

the one thing i hope comes from this is the same thing that happened last time.
similar to last time the old apple cinema displays pushed display manufacturers to ramp up production of 27" 1440p and 30" 1600p

this created binned rejects that eventually led to cheap korean monitors.
my hope is in 12+ months these lead to cheap 32's that come close to this spec at a fraction of the cost

I'm honestly glad that Apple is back in the display business. Apple provides a budget-friendly LG display for the low-end, and now a no-compromise display for the high-end.

My guess is that they will make the display and stand available for a single, slightly lower price when it ships. By introducing the new monitor the way they did, they established value for each component. I heard the groans from the crowd too, so I'm not saying that the introduction was widely well received. I'm still a little shocked that the display appears to be unstable all by itself… that it's an incomplete product without the accompanying stand. That's almost the antithesis of everything Steve Jobs.

If you can’t afford it, you’re not the target market. Those who use them as tools to make money—the target market—will be satisfied.

That target market has mostly disappeared. Three things have happened since Apple started serving the pro market:

1) The shareholder value revolution rages on. Companies are less willing to let their employees spend money, because that robs some rich SOB a deck wax or some damned thing. These people have switched to Windows, because it's cheaper, or they've been "outsourced" to a firm that uses Windows.

2) Apple took so long to get around to the pro market in this decade, and then released an inappropriate machine, and then didn't update it for years. Those people have moved to Windows. They also took so long to update their mainstream machines that those people, possible upgraders to the pro machines, have also moved to Windows. That would include me. See my sig.

3) Windows has improved.

Apple's pro market has dried up, and they'll use poor sales of these expensive machines as reason to not update them.

I wouldn't be surprised if Adobe abandons the Mac market when Apple moves to ARM in their consumer machines.

Oh, were you talking about just the stand? Like I said, it’s quite expensive.

My original comment was about the monitor. But even with the stand, the price is more than reasonable—if you’re a pro who needs/wants what it offers. As I said, if you can’t afford it, or you think this monitor/stand is overpriced at $5,999, you’re not the target market.

Strange way to introduce the price.

Surely it would've been better to say the price is $5,999 with the option to purchase without the stand for $4,999.

Anyway, considering that Apple were comparing their display to those of costing $40,000 I guess $6k would be considered a bargain for the professionals this display is aimed at...

This is Apple new innovation. This is really sad. Apple engineers could have spent time for other stuff, instead of making a stand for the monitor very few people would buy.

Amazing display but Apple is really out of their minds pricewise.
I am still using my 30" ACD. I bought two for $3k back when they launched. Now I would have to spend $10k. What a joke and a shame. They won't sell many. Pro's are not that stupid.

These are not for people who they they are pros, but for movie and music studios. No one else needs what this product delivers. Did you watch the presentation and note that they next closest monitor is $43,000 and cannot do what the Apple monitor can do? The people who need this monitor were already willing to take it to the extreme. This is a money saver.

I have no problem with 5000UD 6K Ultra Pro screen. Where I have a problem is lack of 2000 2500USD very good Apple sreen with thunderbolt support.
I still have 20 inch and 23 inch ACD. They are OK after all these years but I have issues with connecting them to USB C Macs...
Apple made this monitor because there is nothing on the market that meets their needs or that can capitalize on the power of the new Mac Pro. I too am disappointed they no longer sell an equivalent to the 27" Thunderbolt monitor, but I understand why...plenty of available monitors including the hideous LG monitors. I don't see why LG does not attempt or at least partner with Apple to create a monitor that looks similar to the Thunderbolt Display.

LG, HP, Dell, etc. They all make "4k" displays <$800 such as LG 27UK850-W or HP Z27.

You're right. There are alternatives. From what I understand though none work well with standard keyboard controls (volume and brightness) available with Apple monitors. I know it is not a major thing, though it is quite convenient.

I suggest you go back and re-read what I wrote. I'm not griping about the price. I only stated that for what they're charging it should include the stand.

"I only stated that for what they're charging it should include the stand," is pretty much "griping about the price."

I can recommend the Dell UltraSharp UP3218K as an alternative.

It's also 32" and actually 8K unlike this blurry old 6K display that will make people point and laugh at you. And yes, of course it's IPS. Covering 100% of the Adobe RGB color space and 98% of DCI-P3. Yours for ~$3,500. Monitor stand included. The only downside seems to be that it bears the mark of the devil.

$200 for the VESA connector and $999 for the monitor stand? The crowd at WWDC are already Apple devotees. Did you hear the groan? I know Apple want to ignore that groan but amply that by a million in the real world and Apple may realise they're really taking the piss.

Not even in the same league. It's like recommending a VW Beetle to someone who wants to race in Formula 1. Assuming the Apple displays performs according to specs, except for resolution, it's nowhere near the new XDR. It's not even close. That doesn't mean the Dell isn't a good monitor for hobbyists, youtubers, etc. The XDR is aimed at reference professionals, those that currently pay over $30k for a monitor with worse specs than the XDR (again, if it delivers). People have to understand, if you're not a mastering facility, broadcast studio, etc. working on multi million dollar productions year after year, the XDR is not aimed at you. You're better off with some LG, Dell, etc. because you don't need the level of performance (accuracy).

  1. Are you planing to get the new Mac Pro and just need an affordable monitor to use with it?
  2. Does it have to come from Apple, Inc.?
Aren't there other monitors out there that will suit your needs? Even if Apple made one for THE REST OF US, it would probably come with an Apple tax. I don't mind paying it for a machine that will run the OS, but if I could get a decent monitor (when an external monitor is required) for less from somewhere else) I certainly would.

If I get the Mac Pro which low end is no longer in the reasonable or affordable computing power for small businesses or a monster Mac Mini with external drive storage, I would still need a monitor. I would be willing to pay some extra for superior build quality like an equivalent to an up to date Cinema Display or hell even a 5k iMac type display. The monitor choices outside look terrible, let’s face it, and the performance/affordability isn’t great either.

Well, I’m a pro and the price is absurd.
I fear no one will buy it because it is so far beyond the spec needs of mere mortals plus Apple has abused the trust of Pros for so long. And will Tim Cook commit to it or will he use low sales in the short term as justification to cancel it. If Apple were wise, they’d publicly commit to at least 10 years on this model plus offer a roadmap of part upgrades.
