That would be great for professionals as well; especially those dealing with motion & animation. 60hz is nonetheless more than reasonable at that resolution without modern I/O like HDMI 2.1

Why they should have had Thunderbolt 3 *and* HDMI 2.1
Are there any video cards that could drive a 6K monitor at refresh rates over 60Hz using HDMI 2.1? Would video pros who care about accuracy/reference color want or accept lossy compression? Are they OK with chroma subsampling? Would refresh rates higher than 60Hz drive a $5K monitor to $10-15K, or higher? What percentage of the 6K customers care about >60Hz?

It’s more complicated than just saying they should have a HDMI 2.1 port.

You said the price is absurd, I asked compared to what?

Agree. It's nice for deep blacks, but that's about it. I prefer other tech for brightness and most importantly, no burn in issues. The other tech has improved to the point the positives of OLED are minimal.

It's pretty much a gap tech until microLED.

I dunno. I've not seen microLED, but I've read its aperture ratio is only ~10%. I've found I'm very sensitive to aperture ratio (which is why I strongly prefer LCoS, which has an aperture ratio >90%; anything less looks unnatural to me--screen door effect, etc.). Indeed, it seems even OLED has an inferior aperture ratio (hard to find specs on this, but it seems to be in the 60% range).

It's too expensive. Yes, 6K displays are expensive, but why not create something people can afford as well? It's like Apple thinks most people are loaded.

Apple think that they do not add any value for the low end monitors. Here is a monitor for an audience that is not being serviced by any option.

I actually like the design and the price is fine for a 6K 10-bit display, but again there's never an in between. We have to buy iMacs and settle for throttling, no upgrades, integrated graphics... Pretty disappointing.

The iMac Pro and the Mac Mini serve most of the needs of the lower end customers, despite all the complaints.

Is it just me or does that $999 stand look incredibly basic and ugly?

I own a lot of Apple products and would definitely not consider myself the "target audience" for this display that everyone keeps talking about. However, how can anyone justify the price for this stand? No amount of R&D equates to this price for the tech in my head.

It seems like its Apple's way of giving all their "pro" users the middle finger for complaining about bringing back a truly upgradable Mac Pro and new display. :D

Glad to see them release something that people really wanted though.

Nope, it's PAL-NTSC>1080p>DCI 4K>8K>16K for professional standards.

It is preferred to have a display that is greater than 4K to master 4K content, so that one has the ability to display UI while seeing the full resolution image. As for your list, you seem to have left out UHD.

Where could I buy a 6K TV to watch a 6K film on?

This is primarily for mastering UHD and DCI 4K content. One would want an 7K-8K monitor to work with 6K images (again, need space for the UI).

Everyone needs to calm down. They'll inevitably be a 'cheap' version released at some point. Probably alongside the refreshed iMac as they'll probably share the same design.

There's also a multitude of displays available for every budget. So again, everyone needs to calm down and relax.

Thanks! I totally forgot about that (as it was not exhibited in 120fps almost anywhere). At IBC this year, a few companies were showing 120fps for sports, but for dramatic content (from my experience :) even 48fps looks terrible. :)
Oh I agree, 23.97 all the way. Even when I see 60fps content on YouTube (especially motion graphics) it just looks odd and makes my eyes ache.

It’s called the iMac Pro

Like others, I gasped at first.
I type this out on my Cinema Display 30" from 2006. Not a single dead pixel or burn-in. Price paid: $1,799.00. Pretty good investment for 13 years of use and it will be the 2nd monitor when I purchase the new Apple monitor (with the new Mac Pro).

How can there be a cheap version of what is essentially an ultra high-end 6K display that’s squarely catering to video professionals who need to edit in 4K?

The “cheap” versions are the iMac 5K and the iMac Pro.

Actually, not all corporations are valued at a trillion dollars, so plenty will be like “yeah..nope” . This is absurd pricing.

I feel bad for the artist in my division, that still has a MP 4.1 and has been waiting for this release to finally upgrade.

Manager already told him that he is getting a nice HP Z or Dell Precision.
It’s not absurd pricing if you need a Xeon workstation; you’ll pay more for a similarly configured HP Z4/Z6.

Realistically, if your artist has been getting by with a ten year old Mac Pro, a regular iMac or a Mac mini would likely be sufficient, I would think. But if the worker will be more productive and there’ll be a better ROI with a Windows box, get the PC and enjoy the savings.

I look at this is as a sign that apple is tanking. They raised the price to make up for the low sales.

The problem isn't merely the cost of this model. It's the lack of lower cost options for professionals on a lower budget. I used to be one of those professionals but even when I could afford a Trinitron display I'd often settle for a Diamondtron display. By not offering anything else, Apple's sacrificing the majority of the market to win a pissing contest.
No idea who you think Apple is in competition with re: the contest you refer to, but many who want a 27” 5K monitor buy an iMac or iMac Pro.

Personally, I’d like Apple to sell a 21.5” 4K monitor and a 27” 5K monitor based on the iMacs they’re already selling, but apparently they don’t think there would be sufficient demand for Apple-branded monitors in those sizes. If they were to release one or both of those models, particularly the 27” 5K, it wouldn’t surprise me.

Both in engineering and finance people normally use cheap-average 300 bucks displays.

My question is, who is the target audience for this device apart from random posers? I guess cinema studios or something?

I don’t see your average (mortgaged-home) designer/employee/freelance spending $6000 on a monitor (or $12000 on a monitor+base mac pro).

It’s called the iMac Pro
You've misread his comment.
He was referring to an updated 27" regular iMac and 27" Apple Display releasing together that looked more like this Pro Display...

His reply was about me saying that there should have been an updated 27" Apple Display along with this 32" release.

Surely, you're not going to buy 2 or 3 iMac for a multi monitor setup.

Apple recently released a 23.7” 4K monitor. How bad is that for editing video?

Can’t wait to place my pre order.

Does anyone know if apple released a date?

Likely released in fall in tandem with the Mac Pro.

Which for Apple seems to be code for “at the end of the year, and in possibly limited quantities”.

Hope that doesn’t happen this year, I really want the xdr reference monitor.

That stand is gorgeous.
Won’t be surprised if some customers purchase it to use with other displays.
