Hmm... just did a comparison overlay of the images on Apple's website. If they're all to scale, the 40mm Series 4 Apple Watch is now as tall as the 42mm Series 3 and a lot wider - it's more square and the corners have a larger radius.

That's going to be BAD NEWS for people with small wrists. I don't think my wife will want to upgrade her 38mm Watch now. FFS... this was a HUGE selling point of the Apple Watch 38mm.

I hope they're not to scale - another post here with overlays from the shop drawings suggest Apple's website images aren't to scale. I think I'll ditch the pre-order and wait for the hands-on reviews/comparisons first.

So if I get the SS version with LTE, can I still use it like a non LTE version? (like my series 0) not intetested in paying extra per month amd also giving up my grandfathered unlimited.
Correct. I have the current generation with lte but don’t have it setup. O my reason I got the lte model is because I wanted stainless steel. You can’t get stainless steel without the lte.

Both have sapphire on the back, but aluminium is still limited to the Ion-X glass on the front.

Drat. Can you point out where that's listed? I've been looking and can't find the information. :(

I'd been planning to get an Edition, but now that that's nixed, it looks like I'll have to go stainless again. I've bumped my watch against things often enough to know that it'd scratch with Ion-X, but the sapphire crystal remains unblemished. Sadly, the case is scratched up a bit -- I need to polish it to remove the scratches, but I may just trade it in instead.

Oh well. At least if I do go stainless again, my Milanese Loop won't look out of place, but an Edition would have looked pristine for far longer. Unless I go space gray. Decisions, decisions.

Edit, next day: Turns out the mobile app displays that detail. If the desktop site has it, I honestly missed it... repeatedly. Ah well. Now I just have to decide on stainless case color.

I was actually expecting pulse oximetry like Garmin recently did (for altitude sports/aviation... and those with significant cardio-respiratory disease). It would have been very easy to add.
I had the pleasure of working on pulse ox/ETCO2 stuff in its early days - which is a while ago now.

Even back then, people thought "oh, it can go into a watch, no problem!"

Nope, not that easy. Reflection acts different than transmission.

What's the biggest hit for Garmin's pulse ox? Inaccuracy.

While I'm sure Apple is working on this (it opens up a bunch of cool things, like sleep apnea studies), it's not straightforward.

Love the new series 4 watch in gold but I notice they have removed the stainless steel link bracelet straps and are only selling the loop. I really like the link bracelet and had hoped they would bring out a gold one to match.

One oddity I have noticed at https://www.apple.com/uk/watch/cellular is that, although "there are two separate models for Apple Watch Series 4", "They have been optimised for use in the country of purchase". How can a given model sold across multiple countries be optimised for each country?

Lack of optimisation is one thing but lack of functionality is more serious. Model A2007 (40mm) and Model A2008 (44mm) are sold in both China and Hong Kong, yet there is a note against the latter country stating, "This product has been optimised for use in Hong Kong and will not work in mainland China." How can this be the case if they have the same model number?

Okay, this is good.
The watch is really evolving into a useful medical device.

ECG lead 1 isn't going to replace a full 12-lead ECG, but by golly it's a damn fine start!

I won't be buying one, but I like the direction they're going in...

(I'm a doc)
Agree. My parents would never dream of buying an Apple Watch before today. Now they are locked in buyers.

Where is the Watch & and band combination feature on Apple’s website? Most of my bands have a white lug and I’m curious what that would work like with the SS gold model.

has anyone seen a side by side of the series 3 and 4 yet? I need to see what the 42 vs 44 actually looks like

The difference is going to be subtle. Both watches are the same width. And the 44 is only going to add 1mm to the top and bottom. Here's Apple's schematics altered to reflect the additional 2mm. As you can see, it's subtle. The display area is what's really significant here.

It can't be wider, or the old watch bands wouldn't fit.

And while the exact measurements of the height may not be 40 and 44, it won't be the same as the original as the exact heights were 38.56mm and 42.5mm.

If I get a chance I'll create a photoshop with the new photos sized to scale and post.

So I just want a black stainless with GPS, I don't want stupid cellular. But if I want stainless I don't get a choice, how fracking dumb!

Apple announced new Apple Watch models at its Gather Round event today at the Steve Jobs Theater in Apple Park, Cupertino. The Apple Watch Series 4 will be available in 40mm and 44mm sizes - a step up from the 38mm and 42mm options of previous models - has a thinner body, and comes with a number of next-generation medical heart detection features approved by the FDA.

The new models have screens that are 30 percent larger than previous versions and, combined with a new user interface, allow watch faces to display up to eight complications, while native apps can show more information.

The Digital Crown has been re-engineered to include haptic feedback for better tactile responsiveness, the built-in speaker is 50 percent louder, and the microphone has been relocated, to reduce echo for better sound quality.

Meanwhile, new heart detection features, made possible via a new electrical heart sensor, include the ability to perform electrocardiogram (ECG) readings right out of the box, as well as detect low heart rhythm with background detection for atrial fibrillation, and low heart rate monitoring to detect very low blood flow from the heart.

The back of the Series 4 is made entirely of ceramic and sapphire crystal, with radio waves able to pass more freely through the front and rear, enabling better reception when using cellular functions. Despite the new tech, battery life remains on average the same as the previous generation Apple Watch, while running enthusiasts can now look forward to six hours' battery life when using outdoor workouts.

A new 64-bit Dual Core S4 processor provides up to 2x faster performance over previous generation models, and faster accelerometer and gyroscope technologies allow for better sensitivity, including the ability to detect a physical fall.

By analyzing wrist trajectory and impact acceleration, the Apple Watch Series 4 sends the user an alert after a fall, which can be dismissed or used to initiate a call to emergency services. If the device senses immobility for 60 seconds after the notification, it will automatically call emergency services and send a message along with location to emergency contacts.

With watchOS 5, Activity competitions allow users to challenge other Apple Watch wearers, automatic workout detection provides an alert to start a workout while giving retroactive credit, and Yoga and Hiking are new dedicated workout types that accurately track active calories burned and exercise minutes earned.

Meanwhile, Apple Watch owners can reach their friends with a tap of the wrist with Walkie-Talkie, a watch-to-watch connection exclusive to watchOS 5 that allows communication around the world over Wi-Fi or cellular.

The 40mm and 44mm Apple Watch models come in GPS and GPS + Cellular versions, in Silver, Space Gray, and Gold aluminum case options, and stainless steel options in Silver, Space Black, and Gold (with matching Milanese band).

A new Nike+ collection for Series 4 features redesigned Nike watch faces, which match to the new band colors, including a Pure Platinum/Black Sport Band and a Summit White Sport Loop with reflective yarn. Meanwhile new Hermès variants introduce an assortment of color-blocked bands and watch faces that shift from one color to the other with the passage of the minute hand.

Apple Watch Series 4 pricing starts at $399 for GPS and $499 for LTE, while the Series 3 continues to be available but at the new lower price of $280. Orders for the new models and new bands open Friday, September 14, with availability beginning Friday, September 21, in Australia, Canada, China, Denmark, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Italy, Japan, Singapore, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, the UAE, UK and US, with other countries later this year.

The new cardio/falling stuff sounds tremendous, it makes the Watch attractive to a different market than the physical fitnesss crowd. But I can't help wondering if all this new heart-monitoring technology is going to adversely impact battery time. Since Apple hasn't managed to do anything to address what a lot of us consider a pressing issue, this is a question of some importance.

It hasn’t been a pressing issue since they released the series 3. 18 hours use is definitely spot on. My wife and I simply don’t have an issue charging it.

Not terribly exciting frankly. The iPhones are still exceptionally overpriced... lets face it, the MacBook 12" is about the same price as the iPhone Xs Max... Bang for the buck boys and girls, not hard to see which one is better.

The watch is still is not a watch but more of an overpriced tech toy. Yea it has health data but lets get real, do you throw out your RADO or TAG Heuer after two years? Does your Movado battery last 18 hours? Even a wind up watch lasts a full day... 18 hours is a joke. An Apple WatchTheSuckersPay

Right. How does that MacBook fit in your pocket?

Tech toy? I charge it over night. Non issue, but I understand most people here just like to bitch. You can go buy a Samesong watch, we don’t care.

While I'm not happy with the price increase from last year, looking back the 42mm sport is really only 29$ more than the FIRST generation apple watch which was 399$ for a 42mm. Granted, the generation 4 is probably about what 10x faster and 5x better. (subjective I know).

It's clearly some combination of planning for tariffs (if they aren't already in place) and apple price increases over time. A 25% import duty wouldn't account for it all (Even though its about 20% increase to retail prices from last year) since the tariff only applies to the imported value of the product, not the RETAIL price of the product. These watches can't be more than about 125-150$ parts, maybe some shipping, meaning only about a 25-40$ increase in sold cost IF there is a tariff impact.

Maybe they are just planning ahead and didn't want to raise prices once the stupid trade war gets fully underway. Maybe it's better to lower prices in the future if the trade war gets settled without this impact, and / or see what demand is and then LOWER prices? Now THAT would be surprising.

I'm a 46yo who was diagnosed with myotonic dystrophy, which affects your heart and leads to falls. I see this as a possible life-saver, but I'm not sure I can afford $400 unless I can get health insurance to kick in.

This opens the question up to possibly using my HSA account to pay for the Apple Watch since it has all these health features. Basically considered a medical device now.

If the future tariffs had any impact then why didn't they increase the prices of the iPhones? The Cellular version being $100 more than the last model (and the current GPS model) is the part that irritates me. I'm still buying one, but ugh.

Hello ...

I've been trying to find out more about the tech specs for BOTH GPS and cellular models for Series 4. If I recall correctly, last year's Series 3 GPS had 8 GB of storage on their Watch and the cellular model had 16 GB storage (but here's the kicker though: Apple had reserved 8 GB for use with Apple Music ... a real drag because I don't want to use Apple Music, and I can't use the second 8 GB for *my* music!).

Anyway, if you happen to know with certainty the tech specs between these two models (GPS and cellular) aside from whether it has LTE or not, I'd appreciate seeing those! Thanks.

The price went up all over the world in every country.

Looks like Edition is gone. Stainless Steel was always the prettiest watch though, and having it in gold is even better.

Wrong. Many good watch-specific apps.

Two factor authenticator from Duo, best thing ever. Don't need my phone or a phone call to get into secure systems is just one prime example.
Duo is the best!!!!!!
