I Don't Get All The Bitching

I watched the iOS 7 brief live and again at home. Most or all of the issues people have been discussing on these boards for months if not a couple of years has been touched on and addressed with this update. Including multi-tasking and application integration. So it was not just a "design upgrade". There were items addressed under the hood. They even put the notification center on the lock screen. Also the multi-tasking is intelligent to support better battery life and use usage to determine how much resources to keep apps update to date with new information or notifications - mixing the multi-tasking of Android with live tile type functionality of Windows.

Also - they did some magic with the screen presentation where the top layer seems to float over the bottom layer - something that I do not get on my current Android device.

Yet - what do we hear ? "I don't like the icons". Good grief.

Now the next shoe to drop in the iOS world is the hardware upgrades to the iPhone and the iPad. If they put as much effort in the next iPhone - then they will have a true challenger to Android (note I did not say Samsung - because Samsung is dependent on the software for its success). Without the fragmentation.

This was an outstanding update to iOS and it will pay dividends going forward.

Yeah but without all the fragmentation of the Android world. It also has a more elegant user interface (at least from my subjective opinion).

Does the font look kinda thin only to me?

EDIT: Great update imho, looks fresh and more consistent. But that thin font?

Apple just crushed Android with this. Looking forward to the release this fall

I also liked the dig against Android/Samsung with the comment on Air Drop approach towards NFC - "You can share to multiple people easily at once without walking around "bumping" everyone's phone."

I don't mind Apple copying Google. If Google has a problem with it they can sue Apple, I just like a good UI. Let's face it, Android borrowed heavily from Apple too.

Android still does multitasking better with their app switcher button, rather than a double-tap home...but AirDrop sounds better than what Android does.

Maybe Apple should consult with everyone on MR before releasing anything. Then we really will never get a product released. They were right about one thing. This release surely is polarizing. I like it but wonder how older users of iOS will adjust.

Overall agree. The advantage Apple has is a better overall ecosystem that reaches back to the desktop and the new syncing of apps between OS X and iOS is quite powerful.

The photo management software also looks superior on Apple.

Shallow dig though. The point of "beam" - as I understand it is if you are looking at photos with someone - you can easily send them to another device. If two people are looking at one phone - they can bump. Easy.

Once you get into a scenario where you're too far to bump - you might as well email, whatsapp or text the image. Sure air drop is nice - don't get me wrong - but the "joke" against Samsung - like I said - is a bit shallow.

ETA: Also Apple's fine print on Air Drop is "AirDrop is available on iPhone 5, iPad (4th generation), iPad mini, and iPod touch (5th generation) and requires an iCloud account."

So no earlier iPhone and you have to have an iCloud account. And I believe you need wifi/etc.

S-Beam from what I understand creates an ad-hoc wifi (no wifi actually needed) and uses NFC. No external account needed.

Not really shallow. If two people are looking at one phone - one person can push a button and share the file/photo with that person and he/she does not have to pull the phone out of their pocket.

Point is - same capability - easier functionality. If that is shallow then Android's initial cut was just as shallow.

please explain how so? in case you haven't noticed.. all of those added features have already been in android.. some in more than two versions ago

Well some of these features are done better in a more tightly integrated environment. Siri also now has features that exceed that of Google voice.

The design is really all over the place. So inconsistent. Steve Jobs had the masters whip and he controlled the show. This shows that Apple is in demise. It is Rome waiting to happen. The biggest shock is the hardware... even that shows that Ive's is nowhere without the master. The current mac pro is a work of Art compared to the big black butt plug, or trash can. :(

You know nothing of industrial design and how it works. The sheep will never understand the intricacies of relative design between hardware and software.

Did you think the Mac Pro would remain having expandable hard drive bays and grilled externals for the next ten to twenty years when technology advances quickly?

The Flash memory in the Mac Pro did NOT surprise me at all. I saw this coming. Learn to use common sense and a third eye without the subjectivity.

NOTE: However, I do take issue with the iMac's single grill design with aluminum because in my second floor apartment, in the summer, it gets very hot and the heat of the summer itself, makes the computer warm up too fast despite the AC. But, in the deep cold of the winter in VT, I NEVER have heat issues on the iMac.

So, what does this mean? It means Apple should've THOUGHT about room and climatological temps that affect iMacs in altitudes or floor space. A single grill for the iMac is not enough, I think, to let it continue working all day in the heat of summer.

i keep hearing that yet no one here has been able to explain why it's all of a sudden better.. and please no more "ecosystem" this and that.. i use mainly mac computers and i never have any issues syncing my android phone with them.

It looks like a huge step forward in terms of functionality.

Maybe most of the "upgrades" have long been on Android, but who cares?

Some Android users are like bad preachers, they think that pretty much no one is enlighten as they are, hence they have to enlighten every single person they pass by.

Android is amazing, but what it shines on innovation it lacks on reliability.

iOS 7 might not have all the bells and whistles that can be found on Android or Jailbroken devices, but it get most of the most important without compromising performance.

And for me, there is where the value lays.

I was only going to stick to iPhone so I could keep my Tiny Tower and use iMovie trailers, but here's another reason to keep my iPhone. Finally, a more convenient way to turn on and off WiFi!

At this point there is little more that Android has that does not require significant compromise in battery life. The only main reason at this point for hard core users will be the larger form factor but that could soon get resolved with new iPhones.

Horrible. The white hurts my eyes and the icons look really really bad. Also very inconsistent use of arrows shadows and gradients. It looks like Apple are having an identity crisis. Ives is not a graphic designer, he knows jack about graphic design. Terrible skinny typeface / very bad and inconsistent use of type / horrible blurry backgrounds / with those campy 50's dots. This is a really weak redesign. Not worthy of Apple. Jobs must be looking down in total disgust. This is not the Apple I once loved. And did I mention the icons... euch. This is seriously the first time I think that I saw an Apple presentation and thought 'WHAT ARE THEY DOING!!! WRONG WRONG WRONG... 15 Apple devices I have bought in the last 13 years, always loved them, but this is really bad. Not to mention the Airport tower, what the .... haha that is a real joke. Jeez and the Mac Pro.... looks soooo cheap. I am not trolling. I have been a true mac user. So disappointed :mad::eek::(

What Ive is doing with iOS 7 is not considered graphic design. It is a form of UI design. Did you expect them to pull a HAL 9000 with iOS7?

iOS6 is stale. Trust me. You never want to stick with an old design for too long. Apple had to learn a hard lesson in "Move it or Lose it".

The white background does not hurt my eyes. But looking at a website with black backgrounds and stark white text hurts the eyes. What they did was invert it with svelte font typefaces to add elegance to it.

I don't know if I should wait and see what iOS7 will be when released, or just get an Android phone at the end if the month when I'm eligible to upgrade.

These new changes look good, but if the iPhone screen doesn't get larger, then it's a no go for me.

I share things with ease all the time.

But his joke was (paraphrased quote) "without walking around "bumping" everyone's phone"

If the person is next to you - you're not walking around. Simple as that. I think both s-beam and airdrop have their use cases.

It is absolutely nauseating to see so many people troll this topic. They cannot let us, Apple fans, enjoy a new software/hardware release without their need to stomp all over it. I have never gone to an Android site to say anything bad about a device I don't own or wish to own.

Has the whole Internet devolved to the lowest level of conversation? Where is common civility? Why is it always mine is better than yours, just like in Kindergarten?

Nobody asks you to comment if you do not own an Apple device or never intend to buy one. Your negative comments reinforce my affinity to Apple. Go troll somewhere else where the sun doesn't shine.

It's ironic you post that since I actually don't have an iPhone and use a Galaxy S4. :p Actually when I posted, it seemed most of the critics were Apple users. And don't worry, I still own and use a lot of Apple products. :) And I still stand by my statement that iOS7 aesthetically looks really nice IMO.

As for trolling, it's both sides of the aisle. Some Apple users are extremely smug (I can't tell you how many posts Ive seen with "SAMEsung," "SamDUNG," etc) and some Android users here will call them out on it (some troll, some don't). And likewise, some Android people are just trolling the Apple people. I don't get either extremes...

but that's the thing.. having owned a 4S and now an S3.. the S3 gets me through the day easily, while the 4S i had to plug in at work to make sure it gets me through the rest. and if i ever needed more from the S3.. at least i have the option to use an extended battery..

but yea.. i get how people get stuck with one platform and be loyal to it.. but i wouldn't say that ios7 "crushes android" at all, since it really doesn't bring anything new for someone who has experience in both.. i don't see anything that would make me want to switch back.

anyway.. cheers.. gonna go watch the Sony E3 conference.
