how exactly? that sounds like sayin' just to be sayin'. metro is huge solid color blocks with giant words going off the edge of the page. this is delicate, intricate, multilayered and a different color palette. i think it's great, borrowing a bit here and there but definitely original. the flatness with transparency and multidimensional reactive design is genius. can't wait to get my hands on it.

No need to wait. Just buy Android phone. Jelly Bean UI's flatness with transparency and multidimensional reactive design is genius.

I think it looks great, Apple finally is bringing their A game again. Now let's see what they have in store for the next iPhone... I'd like to see iOS 7 on an iPhone with a larger screen. Either way, I think it looks cool and at least they are finally getting around to some long overdo updates.

I don't want a bigger iPhone screen myself, but this should look wonderful on an iPad.
Love your sig.

Dont forget HTC, everyone always think trolls only like samsung, but many an android handset is made by HTC, with their 471 PPI LCD 3 display.

sure. i myself like HTC. but that doesnt mean I will start using it. Also, I dont think HTC either has the money or the taste to go for such a troll-paying tactic ;)

I think today was a step back in terms of usability in lots of ways, but your comment does not sense to me. What on earth are people doing with phones that iOS was suffering with? Seriously most the features people mention that are missing most people don't care about. Most people surf Internet, send email and messages, play games and take pictures. All the phones are about the same in this regard, and I find Apple's implantation has been great. Based on the number of people who actually take pictures with their phone or surf the Internet it seems apple is pretty dominant.

Styles change so apple updated the style to keep up with fashion. I dont like it but lots do. Usability and feature wise apple just has to keep up with some pointless features on other platforms that 1% of people care about so the press doesn't cry and say oh noes apple is behind.

Their is one area apple lags that actually does matter - the state of their cloud. Little else matters in day to day phone use for most people. My mom bought an iPhone and she barely uses any features besides FaceTime, email, and iMessage, and the Internet. Multitasking, widgets and crap like that would detract from her experience by making things even more confusing. I need to remember to tell her not to upgrade to 7 because it will be more confusing than 6 for her.

I care about those features. That's why I have a choice.

1% of users actually use the features demo'd today? I don't have percentages but based on Apple's stock falling today and all the reviews I've read as well as Apple faithful user comments I think you may be underestimating what the "average" user is in 2013.

Multitasking, widgets and other crap like that are why Apple who revolutionized the mobile market in 2007 with something new but they stopped giving users what they want and lack "crap" like that.

But be consoled. You have another 4" inch retina screen to look forward to with an iOS that is still at least a year behind the competition.

Smart move would have been to short AAPL before the close of the market today in my opinion and that's what I did.

It's a long time until the Fall when it does get released and the rest of the market is just going to keep pushing the envelope.

At least you will know by next May what iOS will look like. All of the "crap" features that are introduced on competitors OS's will be copied by Apple.

I hope Jony Ive keeps ups with the tech blogs (I'm guessing he does by the copy that was shown today) because that's what you have to iLook forward to.

Today was a fail for Apple and mostly for Ive because there was nothing but a Xerox copy of every mobile device on the market today and if Jony Ive is the future for Apple. Welcome to 1984.

Be smart and short AAPL because you have a long summer and fall before anything gets released.

You know, the first time I saw the new lock screen, I had to do a double take because it did strike me quite a bit as looking like the Galaxy S4.

I'm still tired as hell and completely whiny because of it, but to me, iOS7 does look like it takes a few cues from Google and a lot from MS. It's very Metro, but without as much emphasis on tiles.

All true. In the end, it looks better, so I am glad for that.

For a while, we will have to live with old apps that clash with the new ones.

I really like the overall aesthetic, but yeah, my reaction continues to be that it just feels non-Apple, like one of those new quiet and soft Samsung ads with the high school grads. Can't wait to play with it though.

...The skeumorphism that Forstall tried to instill is CHILDISH...

Way to long to post the rest of your artistic insight as to why Apple's design copied the rest of the market but as far as skeumorphism goes Jon Ive replaced it with Smurphorism.

Papa smurph is going to love the new "Flat" design and pastels. Just look at how artistically Flat they are.
It's beautiful and pure genius.

Forstall gave skeumorphism but Ive Smurfed it.

Oh wow, sorry if I sound like a rabid foaming-in-the-mouth sheeple, but I can't wait to download and install this!!! :apple:

I like the Smurf comparison. My first thought was a mid-80's mall...like outside of the Benetton store.

anyone know if you will be able to change default browser?

Probably not, Apple has never liked giving power to other companys, so my guess is no.

So... what's new?

So, more CPU use then; not more efficient/faster.
Sigh.

All of you, shut the hell up. You've gotten everything you've asked for, like a new design, and other things, and you're still not happy? Go find the end of a broomstick, and hop on it, trolls.

iPad 3 not getting AirDrop, but iPad Mini... First time I am really really pissed about Apple Incorporated!!! Thx su**ers :*

Apple pretty much says "Lol, what's the iPad 3?", ever since the iPad 4, they've completely forgotten about it. Plus, the iPad Mini is newer, so that could be the reason.

Really? The ipad 3 is more advanced than the mini, thats apple for you.

While that is true to most extent, they probably had a reason for doing so, like I said just one quote ago, maybe because the Mini is newer.

I love it. Probably switching back. Odd that no new phone as announced. I wonder if they will before iOS7 comes out in fall.

The iPhone 5 wasn't announced until the september event of last year, and iOS 6 launched days before it, you'll hear rumors about it coming sometime in the fall. Perfect time for iPhone 5S/6.

If Android is so much better why aren't those users off enjoying their phones/tablets, instead of trolling here? A lot of posts I've read appear to be Apple haters having a cry at what iOS 7 doesn't have that other OS's have, and Apple is so far behind, blah blah blah.
As for the icons, this is only the first beta. There's plenty of time for Apple to act on the feedback and replace them if they have anything else to swap in for the current ones causing so much of a problem for some people.
Functionality wise, things are looking good, I'm looking forward to updating. So far my iPhone does what I want it to do, I don't feel I'm missing anything (quick reply would be nice but I'll get by without it).
I've been to the other side with Android, easy to use but I just didn't like it. Too much time wasted stuffing around with setup and settings, micromanaging battery usage, apps lacking the finish of the iOS equivalent, if I could find an equivalent. I had to root to make any decent use of things, so no better than an iphone without jailbreak IMO. Different launchers, keyboards, widgets and so on, all just gimmicks as far as I'm concerned. Not for others but that's why we are all different in our preferrences. Overall android wasn't a good enough experience for me to stick with it, I prefer iOS, for now.
But I'm not going to bang on about what I didn't like, nor am I going to claim iOS is the be all and end all and say anyonme not using it is a fool and must change etc. Use what suits you, don't waste your time bagging the competition, it just shows you aren't truly happy with your choice like you think you are.

Overall a positive makeover. Announcements like these will never satisfy everyone. Despite a few awkward design choices, I think the overall design is going in the right direction.

A few things I am still very disappointed about and hope will iOS will one day (though doubt will ever) get soon...

- App Drawer! Please, oh please. I am so tired of managing everything on the home screen. Every home screen I've used feels like a mess, including my own!
- Swype-style keyboard. Jobs was so big on keeping the iPhone small and usable in one hand, yet no swype-style keyboard for efficient one handed typing??
- Notification LED...So useful and can be life saving at times...

Bigger screens will come on the iPhone 6...I just know it.

+Major Points for not having widgets! I would hate tacky Android'iques widgets.

Jonny Ive Has No Clothes

The IOS 7 interface redesign is proof that Jonny Ive is not the design genius I believed him to be. Major elements of the new interface are hideously amateurish.

I think Ives might've abused the pastels a little too much, but I kinda like the look otherwise. To me, it's like Apple's take on modern UI design. Like Metro when it's at its best, it's more focused on cleanly displaying content and information. UI bling is kept to an absolute minimum, and is only used to differentiate between the various elements you can play around with.

The most important thing to me though is the updates to multitasking. I always thought this was the worst thing about iOS in comparison to Android and Win8. It's not everything I wanted, but it's a helluva lot better than what it was previous. I'm hoping on the iPad, multitasking is set up more like Expose, where it brings up a grid of apps instead of the more coverflow like set up. If they do this, I'll end up jumping over to iOS7 without a second though and never look back.

You chose that as your first post. I'm not an Ive fan and iOS is a complete rip off of every other modern mobile OS but even I can say at least it's a step in the right direction.

Apple will never give users a choice in my opinion but the OS is not amateurish.

A Samsung/Android/Windows/WebOS/BB 10 copy yes. But not amateurish.

It took a year for Apple to copy the best of the mobile competition and they did a good job getting a jump on 2011.

Let's see what the competition has in the rest of 2013.

I'm probably one of maybe 10 people that think the UI on ios7 is the most beautiful thing I've ever seen (other than my fiancé haha).

Let's play, "Count the 'original' Apple updates"! Here's how to play: You simply watch the video, and count as many Apple "original ideas" that Android has already released months/years before this, and post them in the comment section!

#1 Preview of currently running apps with the app icon AND screenshots of the apps (Android already did it).

#2 The ability to swipe away currently running apps (Android already did it).

#3 Notifications in the lock screen (Android already did it).

#4 Bigger, yet thinner text to look more sleek (Android already did it).

#5 A control center for things like wifi, bluetooth, ect, all with the drag of a finger (Android already did it).

#6 Full-screen web browsing...even though iOS 7 doesn't even let you use literally the whole screen (Android already did it...and you can use the ENTIRE full-screen).

#7 A slide to unlock screen that doesn't actually show a bar to slide, but is invisible in order to look sleeker (Android already did it).

#8 Transparent screens. (Android already did it with the options of using apps that change the launcher...something that Apple still won't allow).

#9 Automatic Updates (Android already did it...YEARS ago).

#10 Photo date tagging (Android already did it).

#11 Automatically organizing photos based on date taken (Android already did it).

#12 Air Drop...Really? Bluetooth does the same thing without using up your data plan. (Bluetooth already did it).

#13 The ability to see web browser bookmarks in screenshot form (Android already did it).

#14 The ability to swipe through different internet tabs (Android already did it).

#15 iTunes Radio...Pandora did this ages ago. (Android already did it with Google Music All Access...AND you can listen to any full song you want (combination of Pandora and Spotify))

If this was a drinking game, we'd all be passed out by now lol

Since that is a pointless "feature" on a phone, any implementation is bad, the farther away from Androids version the better.

1. On a phone, maybe. On a tablet, definitely not.

2. Have you ever seen RT's implementation? Obviously not, otherwise you wouldn't state "any implementation is bad".

The skeumorphism that Forstall tried to instill is CHILDISH. Period. Very, very gay, I hate to say it.

Wait a minute...you're calling the OLD UI childish and gay?

Compared to this one???

The new UI looks like My Little Pony vomited on the screen. Have a man stare at that color scheme for 5 minutes and he'll start complaining about menstrual cramps.

It's trash.

Going flat is the right approach since it's easier on the eyes.

I can't tell since my retinas are burning. Maybe if they had used a color scheme that was...I don't know...NOT radioactive.

So Apple plays catch up with Microsoft and Google on flat design and 'borrows' some features left and right ... wow who would have thought that.
