Press and holding a finger selects text now on the iPad. I wouldn’t be surprised if you can now. But it will be slower than on a Mac still.
yeah pressing and holding will select text but you still have to then grab the nodges(?) and and wrap it around what you want... As I said it literally isnt adding any function other than you dont have to touch the screen of your toouch screen tablet...

They changed the behavior of select for iPads in 13. If you haven’t already, watch the iPad part of the keynote.

Pretty incredible that they were able to hit on so many needed features for iPad OS. This is only going to further cement iPad as the platform for the future of Apple.

What’s the difference?
A lot. The mouse support literally doesnt add any extra functionality. You arent going to be able to select text, right click and hit paste. You will have to hold down button to select the word, then still have to grab the text handles to select what you want and then press the copy button hanging over it.

That’s dumb. Probably the biggest reason people wanted more support on the iPad. Text selection sucks.
at and a left click lol

It’s here. What should I try?

I wonder if the iPad 10.5 will finally get usb 3.0 speeds they sold to us on stage and then didn’t deliver.

Apple had to create an entirely separate OS just to add support for home screen widgets

o_O

i found the whole thing about iPadOS rather boring. external drives. nifty. not like the system supports all files so how useful is that really going to be. using your iPad as an extended display. yawn, that's just copied from a couple of 3rd party setups.

otherwise a couple of new gestures, a new column view and the inevitable multitasking stuff. everything else is the same stuff from iOS

It natively supports all the buttons on my mouse. Face ID is twice as fast as on my XS Max now. I plugged in a 64GB usb drive and a 1 TB external hard drive. The files app recognized them both and I was able to browse them. It is buggy software but I am loving the features!

Seriously asking... HOW does this make this fulfill any more potential than it did before? How does any of this make you more productive or make it a "proper companion" than it is now? I'm just not seeing how this fundamentally changes the iPad and how you interact with it?

Don't get me wrong - cool updates, but I don't see me using the iPad any differently than I do today.

I don’t want to come across as offensive but consider that you are not representative of all? For me for example, the ability to bring in photos directly (for a much easier workflow for Raw processing) and the ability to attach an external drive is huge.

Ok this is a bit awkward as it involves a series of steps, but I’m posting this hoping any of the beta-testers on iPadOS can try this an tell me if this iOS 12 bug is still there on iPadOS on a 11” iPad (This doesn’t happen on 10,5” iPads, just in the 11” and only in landscape)

It involves the small bubble that appears on top when you’re recording or have a dongle connected, or you’re in the middle of a phone call (red bubble, blue bubble, and green bubble respectively). Also it involves the control centre and having the split view activated with 75% of space at the right, and 25% on the left, with the 75% screen being a PDF reader like Books or Documents by Readdle with an actual PDF on it. The app on the 25% at the left doesn’t matter.

Steps to trigger the bug successfully, I repeat, on an iPad Pro 11”, on landscape:

1- Start a recording to get that red bubble at the top right of the screen. The dongle thing doesn’t work because it just last few seconds after plugged, then disappears. And the phone call works as well to trigger the bug but I’m not asking you to make a phone call on the iPad Pro just because of me.

2- Open a PDF on Documents by Readdle or in Apple Books. If it’s just a Book from the Apple Books Store it may work as well, but just to be sure, use a PDF, and when split viewing, use the 75% of the right space for the PDF.

3- Open another app, Pages or another text editor for instance, to split view it along with the PDF, taking the 25% of the screen at the left.

4- Make sure you’re still recording, and just invoque the Control Centre, whie still in landscape, swiping down from the top right corner.

If done correctly, all the apps will restart and the springboard will reload completely.

If you’re followed all the steps and this doesn’t happen, please let me know, because that means Apple finally fixed it.

If it still breaks the system, please take a minute to report it like I already did. Thank you.

EDIT: This has been, apparently, fixed on the new iPadOS.
