No more $199, $299, $399 thanks to the extinction of subsidized contract prices.
Correct.
It's now $32/month, $36/month, $40/month for the phone itself... plus whatever your service plan is.
But remember... you were
always paying for the phone even with the old contracts and "subsidies"
Did you really think you were *only* paying $199 for a brand new iPhone? That your cell carrier was giving you a true subsidy? Or a gift?
No... the retail price of the phone was always built into your monthly phone bill. YOU were paying for it.
At least now you can see it.
And before anyone says "
it was cheaper with contracts and subsidies..."
Your overall monthly payments would likely have gone up anyway even if they kept contracts and subsidies. Things like this tend to get
more expensive over time... not less. Your cost to own an iPhone in 2016 is higher than it was in 2011. I don't think you can blame that strictly on the loss of contracts and subsidies.
It's difficult to make any sort of comparison between the old way of buying phones and the new way.
Hell... back then you had to choose how many minutes you wanted... how many text messages you wanted... and maybe how much data you wanted. What was that worth?
But today... voice and texts are so
devalued that everyone just gets them included. And it's now your
data allotment that is the bulk of your bill.
Times change... prices go up. But you're still on the hook for paying for the phone. Just like you always have.
