iPhone 8 (2017) will be made from ceramic like the new Apple Watch. That's for certain. It will see eliminated the antenna bands (and hopefully the camera protrusions).

So you're pumped that they will one day remove a massive design flaw that they themselves introduced?

What is the problem?

They are providing you an adapter free of charge. And they're moving into the fully digital world.

To me it sounds like a win-win.
Unless the lightning connector plugs into my brain, there's nothing moving into the digital world about it. They're just shortening the length of wire between the digital to analog converter and the speakers by an insignificant amount.

What he said on stage were all good and valid reason and yes ultimately it takes courage. It was a rare moment of honesty on stage.

Not a single one of those reasons was an actual benefit to users. Every headphone manufactured that will work with this phone will have to pay a licensing fee to Apple. That's the real reason for this move.

Yes, it's true. It takes courage to release such an underwhelming round of updates and stand on stage putting a straight face. It takes courage make changes nobody asked for, products that are still playing catch up to your competitors, and to allow Lady Ga-Ga meets Cousin It on stage so it can stand there and lip sync to it's own terrible songs. Well done Apple, and God speed you crazy warrior!

Look at the exchange rate. For every Pound Apple only gets $1.10. (20% VAT, and an awfully bad exchange rate). Do you think Apple should subsidize the British voters that fell for the lies of the weasel and mini-Trump?

True, except that I don't think I've ever seen their prices drop as quickly when the pound has been strong against the dollar. They'll hang on for months saying the same thing the oil companies do: "what we're selling now we bought at the old prices so we have to make that back". Oddly when the exchange rate favours the dollar the prices go up almost immediately.

Why are so many people charging their phones and listening to music?? Do you all really do this so much? If so, why? If I can charge my phone then it's likely i'm somewhere I can use another device - eg my home cinema, my home hi-fi or my home recording studio setup...why would I be using headphones in my iPhone if I have access to these?
My office...

I don't understand the upgrade program. It costs £33.45/m here in the UK and it says that's based on £718 over 20 months 0% p.a. But the iPhone 7 costs £599. Where are they getting £718 from? It says 0% p.a so is it possible the punishment for paying in instalments is an inflated price?

Probably £599 for the phone and £119 for AppleCare. Your decision whether you want AppleCare or not. If you look after your phone, its not really needed with EU consumer laws.

I still don't get it. I thought my data plan subsidized part of the cost of the phone over a two-year contract. You paid part of the cost upfront when you signed a contract, and then your data plan covered the rest of it over the duration of the contact. So again, if I am making a one time payment or monthly installments on the phone, shouldn't my monthly data plan be lower then? Confusing...

No because carriers charge more for plans now.
So, stop going to the gym.

You will eventually, anyway.

I couldn't care less about the headphone jack time to move on.

No. What I'm suggesting is digital-only from the source makes sense. It makes a device just a delivery device. You can get a cheap music/memory stick device for example, but then opt for an expensive set of headphones (w/ the built in DAC) for a great experience - something you'll carry between each device you have w/o the stupid DAC in the middle. This is a good thing for consumer choice.

Bluetooth headphones are currently pretty much the only ones with built in DAC.

Quality audiophile-geared headphones are pretty much always wired, and never have built in DAC.

What you're suggesting would be removing the DAC from the phone, which would mean the speakers in the phone wouldn't work.

Hey, letting everyone know that the 6S now also starts at 32GB and for $549. It's still a flagship phone that's not going to die anytime soon with the overall disappointed response to the 7.

It's a much better value.

Who's disappointed except for the typical whiners?

If you want to pay for it all at once, yes. But if you roll it into a two year installment plan its roughly the same as if you were paying for a phone under the old 2 year plan.

I don't know how else to explain it.

Subsidized Phone: $299, $399, $499
Unsubsidized Phone: $749

Both phones new out of the box

Monthly bill for BOTH plans: the same for me as it always has. No change in monthly cost

Ok, I've been out of it for a couple of years. Are subsidized prices completely gone? My cell phone rates haven't really dropped to reflect this. If that's the case I'm not gonna be very happy.
(haven't checked to see if others have replied) They're almost gone in the US. On my plan, I can still get subsidized phones, but they are much more expensive for the monthly charge for the line. I had to upgrade my (AT&T) plan to get the new pricing, though.

God save the old jack. What will folks do, other than the majority who use whatever is in the box they get, or the remaining other folks who will simply add the adapter to it and forget about it, or those who never use it for anything and will love the new state of art wireless.
I think I'll get the airports and wait for the 10th anniversary phone. Yes the 7 looks great but I'll move to airpods first but in living my 2 year old 6 plus .

I'll wait for reports of 6 , s working with ios10 first before installing the update though.....

Love the seamless design. It may not look that much different from the 6/6s, but when you look closer it's just stunning.

Love that Jet Black iPhone design but thats as far as is goes. Removal of 3.5 mm jack was idiotic move at best. Humans listen to analog music so that analog connector was there for a reason. Moving the DAC outside the case is just inconvenient move for many and most likely requires some extra spending if you want high quality external DAC. Anyway, if Apple had USB-C instead of lighting then one could have seen this merge as new standard way of connecting wired headphones but since all of the Android manufacturers are going with USB-C then Apple is left alone with their proprietary lighting connector. The worst part is that Android has over 80% market share and when one includes computers with USB-C then you end up with massive economics of scale benefits for USB-C camp.

Oh, so this was idiotic unless they used USB-C? Gotcha.

Exactly. They're giving us the adapter in the box. Not really, though, as it's built into the price of the phone but definitely more convenient and less likely to make us feel nickel & dimed. Proof positive, as well, that Steve Jobs is dead and not living in a bunker somewhere. He definitely would have made us purchase it separately reasoning that they already include the best engineered headphones on the market in the box.
