From the photos, it doesn't look like you can charge while listening to headphones. If true, that's a pretty huge downside. The only option would be to spend more money on wireless headphones of some kind.

It's not gonna be the "only option." I'm sure there will be a $5 monoprice dongle that allows you to do this within a few weeks.

Actually, it's the fools and the idiots who don't have a budget. I don't understand where all the hate is coming from today. Hate the phone if you want, but I've already been called a fool and an idiot in the span of 5 minutes for buying a phone that I can afford? #wtfmate
I don't get what's wrong with people on this site today. New toys we've been waiting for an entire year. One guy asks a few questions and he gets killed. Looks like Engadget

My courage is telling me to hold for the 8. Courage may give us back the jack.

Unlikely to happen. A list of things Apple dropped that I don't recall ever coming back.

Floppy Drives
CD Drives
VGA Port
DVI Port
30-Pin Connector
Ethernet Port

the new iphone is really nice...especially that "Jet Black"... I'm surprised nothing else was said about Macbook Pro's, MacPro, etc... a whole event for just the watch and iphone. wow!

Can't charge and listen to wired headphones at the same time. I need this in my car, so no new iPhone for me.
Upgrade your stereo for $79 - jvc media player. Has USB for charging and music, Bluetooth for music and hands free phone calls, works great. Installed it myself in my old car and got a great boost in sound quality as well.

I have to agree.
Say in a few years time, all headphone sockets finally vanish on all devices.
Android Phones, Laptops, Desktops, MP3 Players etc, to be replaced with USB-C over the entire world (after a period of years) and there is Apple on it's own with Lightning ones.

Does not really seem that great a thing does it ?

^^ This. The big mistake was not removing the headphone jack IMO either. It was sticking with the Lightning Port instead of switching to USB-C at the same time. So now they make Lightning port headphones that are only good for the iPhone and not even their own Macbook? Stupid move.

Anybody know whether Apple's wireless is just Bluetooth - or have they introduced a new wireless protocol that actually allows high quality audio?

Umm yes I have an appointment for my new wireless Apple ear buds, I have apple care and my dog ate or I lost one so how do we work this out ?

ROFLMAO

Every year until this one I have paid $130.00 a month for two iPhones with unlimited data. Every year I sold one of my phones and upgraded. Either paying $99, $199, or $299. Then recouping some or all of my cost by selling my old phone. Only now if I want to upgrade do I have to pay for the phone in one of those stupid NEXT plans and my cost will go up by however many months I want to lease the phone for. Or I can just buy the phone and be done either way I am coming out of pocket the full price of the phone plus the monthly cost for service. You must have been on a different plan.

You're making no sense. The prices you listed above are subsidized prices. The full retail cost of those phones was usually about $500 more.

Did the carrier recoup the cost of the subsidy in your plan? Yes, but it doesn't mean it was not subsidized.

NOW, you have to pay full price for the phone AND full price for the service. This is the problem. You selling devices and making money back has nothing to do with the calculations and is a distraction. The total price you pay from 2014-2016 for a subsidized phone and rate plan will now be $4-$500 more expensive from 2016-2018 unless your carrier is offering a lower rate plan for unsubsidized phones. I do not see that mine is.

Just do the math. You'll figure it out.

I have to say, moving away from the analog to digital is a gamble Apple is taking. Long gone are the days that Apple catered their products to what their customers wanted and more into borderline shoving it down our throats.

They're reasoning behind the removal of the 3.5 jack was abysmal at best, so as a pardon they've included an adapter free of charge. You win some / you lose some.

Yes, an external DAC can be better than the one apple uses in its phones, but they could also be used with every other iPhone. Dropping the headphone jack hasn't altered digital audio functionality at all.

Not to mention you still need a DAC in the phone to listen to phone calls on the phone.

Anybody know whether Apple's wireless is just Bluetooth - or have they introduced a new wireless protocol that actually allows high quality audio?
They would have screamed about it non-stop on stage if they had some sort of a high-fidelity wireless audio protocol.

I think it was a great keynote, and Im considering buying the new Iphone. But damn they are expensive with the higher storage levels!

Every time someone shows somebody a Facebook video they see? Every time they click a link that takes them to YouTube? Every time someone sends them an Audio Message? Audio quality is more important than 100 year old technology. Also. Free adapter. If you disagree, you still get to use your antique, dated equipment. Without paying any more to do so.
So you don't know what stereo is?

If audio quality is important (if it's facebook, none of it is important) than you should want the fewest components between the original sound and your ANALOG ears, that doesn't mean adding cheap little DACs and bluetooth into the path.

Your ears haven't changed in over a hundred thousand years, if you're disappointed, disable them with an ice pick.

So that next year, they become courageous enough to be audacious enough to say that we did it again, now the base storage is 64GB, and we keep 128GB and 256GB, or maybe add 512GB at the top. Who knows. But stuntmen they are, of the highest quality. :p
I doubt that they will increase the base storage next year again. 32GB will be probably Apple's base storage option till 2025 :p

So true and exactly my point. iPhones are overpriced compared to Mac's and iPads. We never felt it until now.

This has almost always been the case for cell phones in general. I used to work in the wireless industry from 1990-98 and even then the prices for a phone on-contract was much lower than the price of a phone off-contract. The prices were always subsidized by the contract rate. This practice has been around for far longer than most people here have been carrying a cell phone.

The 7 may as well be called the 6SS.

Other than the home button, the storage, the camera and the processor, the rest of the specs seem to be straight out of the 6S.

Where's the innovation??
