Anyone have any idea if the ram is soldered? They showed the ram in the presentation but I wasn't really sure. Because it would be great to know if it can be aftermarket pushed to 32 gb. I don't need it but seems like a lot of people here do.

It's definitely soldered on.

Two days ago, I called my dealer and asked him if I could already place an order for the new 2016 Retina MacBook Pro.
I'm a developer and Professionally Working with Images/Videos. My circle of friends and colleagues is quite large and there has been ONE thing which we have all been waiting for... All been eager to pay for and order immediately. The MBP 2016 Fully Loaded. Screw the cost. Finally something screaming fast. New processors, MORE RAM....

Watching the Live Coverage I got a little nervous as they totally failed to make a point out of the 'Processor' and DDR4 RAM.... I said to my partner, man - they are seriously going to use the Core i7 and NOT the newer ones along with keeping DDR3. In the end, Schiller just stated that the new MacBooks are awesome.

I was dumbfounded, shell-shocked bewildered over the fact that instead of finding the apple.com address to hit the buy button - I was sitting staring at the people standing up from the Apple Event... I let the iPad enter sleep mode and began playing with my daughters. My wife asked me, so honey, are we poorer already, with a big smile on her face, alluding to me having been rambling about this new Apple Device since the beginning of October... I said, babes, I dont think I'm gonna get it... At least not until they upgrade the RAM and Processor. My iMac 5k is faster and cheaper. My 2014 Retina MacBook Pro is more than fast enough. And it has function keys enabling me to work without taking my eyes off the big wonderful Retina display....

The along came the iMessages from all the colleagues and let me tell you, my words were very mild in comparison to those they chose. I cannot image that we are the only ones with those opinions. I imagine lots of folks had planned on placing an order today. But aren't due to those very reasons.

At least I dont know why I would spend 4k or 5k for a CPU with 16GB of DDR3 RAM. The current iMac is 32GB and fast as fast can be. The Current MBP is fast as well and great at what it does... Why would I shell out money for something that brings nothing to table that aint already available - aside from a mini-iPhone sitting where the function keys used to sit....

I believe this release will go down in history as a mini-Newton. Perhaps if they update the processors and RAM this product will fly... But until they do - my bet is that it will be a brick... Too expensive to browse the web with and too weak to do professional work with... 16 GB of RAM is about the greatest bottleneck for any graphics work... I dont care how many thunderbolt ports or emojis you cramp into it... 16GB to a Muliti-Tasking system like OS X is like putting an iPhone Battery into a Tesla and expect it to drive past the drive way !

The biggest kick in the balls is that the cheapest macbook was the air at £675 (education pricing), now that has shot up to £949.

Honestly its an absolute joke, they are going back to prioritising profits.

About the RAM... let's keep in mind that RAM is becoming less and less important than it used to be. RAM is not doubling sooner as it used to be. Reason? SSD. The new MacBook Pro is capable of reading and writing at least blazing fast 2GB per second. RAM was created as a response to the limitations of HHD and now with SSD being extremely fast with access and transfer, the importance of RAM is much less emphasized than ever. It makes no sense to keep expanding RAM storage if the performance is not as significant as it used to be. 16GB is likley the provide the most bang for the buck and more than that, it just doesn't give you much added value.

Do not expect RAM to keep doubling quickly anymore. With upcoming 3DXPoint technology, the storage will be just as fast as RAM and they may reduce the RAM footprint as well.

storage may get faster and faster (so does RAM) but the connection between the CPU and the RAM is direct, with storage it is not. RAM will always be much faster in use.

an image processing workstation is well served by 32 to 64GB RAM. motion graphics and compositing, 64 to 128GB. CG and 3D compositing, 128 to 256GB. sure, go ahead and say the MacBook Pro is not a "workstation". but then what is it? a $3000 Facebook machine?

The 15" should be called Edition because it is a serious presentation piece. I like the touch bar design a lot. Though it seems pedestrian this is the way keyboards are going. These devices will eventually need A10 derived quad processors to take them to the next level of mobile status symbol.

Say I'm in FCPX and I want to adjust the screen brightness or turn the volume up, do I have to now go to finder to make those keys available on this silly touch bar?

Today is the last time I will bother watching an Apple live or otherwise. It's simply a waste of my time.
This event made my sad. Really sad for Apple.

I will hug my cats and my CATBOOK AIR (hiding the last Mac with a lit Apple) and start work on my XPS 13 Kaby Lake that arrived yesterday.

So long Apple. Ex-computer company.

Outside of all of the other disappointments, the 512 GB standard hard drive is a deal breaker. My current MBP is 512 GB, and I'm running out of storage as it is. I was expecting 1TB on the high end model - without having to pay $400 more.

It is the thinnest Facebook Machine and it is Space Gray, buddy. AND Apple said it is the best there is. Oh, and you can put your favourite Emojis into a touch-menu-bar and soon you can play Pokemon Go on the touch bar....
Oh and it is thinner. Muuuuch thinner. Thinner is better. Its gotta be thinner. If it aint thinner it sucks. One day the MacBook Pro will be so thin that you can't even see it. It will be a software running on Windows Machines !

Probably the best time to go hackintosh!
In any case, I have already been thinking about that. I know it works... Thank's Tim for encouraging young people to move to 17" inflated laptops with mac os X, at an unbeatable price ! I think I will console myself for the absence of touch bar... :)

Yeah, those shows are becoming highly repetitive. A big crowd seemingly being paid to say 'Woooooo' when one of Apple's executives enters the stage... Been trying to locate the people holding the 'Wooooo' posters up when they want folks to interact but they have been pretty good at hiding them....

Why aint no body ever screaming Boooooooo... When they come back from the 'Gatherings' they are 'Ah Man, I am so disappointed with the new products.... etc etc'... Man, why did you go 'Wooooooo' instead of 'Boooooo' when you had the chance ???

Why aint nobody speaking up at those shows --- almost as if the audience was post-inserted and the execs would be speaking in an empty room from a green-screen... Cant imagine SO many people being soooo happy with what is going on there !

so let me get this straight. First the iPhone got rid of 3.5 audio but kept the very specific lightning port, then the macbook loses usb but keeps the audio port while lacking a lightning port for apple brand headphones AND becomes ungodly expensive? what are they smoking?! I want some of whatever it is! And I know this is going to stir up a lot of hardcore apple people, but here comes 1997 again for apple. what are they even thinking at this point?

don't worry, the iPhone 8 will have a USB C port. then everything will line up. and you can buy more headphones and adapters.

This is exactly like me and 4 other people I know that were planning on buying. None of us are buying one - even though all of us had our credit cards ready. 2 of them have already ordered Surface Books. I'm going to use my 2014 MBP for a little bit longer and try to figure out what to do.

4GB GPU not enough for me (and people thinking I should be enough with 4GB, sorry but no, I've a Pascal Titan X in my Unix desktop and its 12GB are even a bit limited for my projects). I'll skip this MBP until they support at least an 8GB VRAM GPU, which is a bare minimum for my visual simulations datasets. I'll keep my old MBA (not suitable for graphics either) until they add a really powerful GPU.

the Intel integrated graphics can make use of up to 64GB of system RAM. so...

I went hunting for info on DDR4 vs DDR3. The difference is apparently extremely small. So whats the big deal that they used the fastest of the DD3 offerings instead of DDR4?

From what I can see between all the bitterness on this thread, the biggest issue really is just that it maxes out at 16gb of ram instead of 32. Everything else they changed (removing ports) is a bit annoying but not the end of the world.

EDIT: I would have loved a bit more powerful graphics chip but the one it offers isn't bad. Not a deal breaker for me (I chose the 4gb one)

I really can't complain over the Macs I have today. They are fast and great. And OS X is the best there is IMO.
So I won't switch to a new system just cause I am dismayed and disillusioned with the 2016 MBP. To me the Operating System is the most important thing... iOS is the only thing keeping Apple in the business of building phone hardware. The hardware is outdated in comparison to competition but Android is like driving a 1984 Volkswaggon in comparison to a 2016 Mercedes E-500. Latter representing iOS ;-)

I think the 2016 MBP will see the fastest hardware update any Mac has ever seen as soon as Apple realizes that sales are anything but remotely representing their estimates... This release would have been the bomb with 32 and 64 GB RAM versions, new Processors, DDR4 RAM, and 8GB VRAM. That would have been - state of the art. And directing the future and WORTH the gargantuan price tag. But this device is while being thinner and having an emoji bar features nothing that merely reflects the future of Lap Tops... At least that would be the death of lap tops.

wow... The level of anger in this thread is beyond just about anything I've seen!
Personally, I think these are demonhole machines. My rMBP is only 3 years old, but I'd love a space grey 15.
That track bar or whatever it's called is something I've wished for for many years now. So they've actually made my computer wish come true! Touch ID on the machine is massive as well. Thinner and Lighter too!
The ports will be a little painful until new cables are released for all the relevant situations, but after that it will be great.

This is the first time in a long time I've thought... I want to ditch my current computer and get a new one before its end of life.

This machine, the 2018 iPhone plus next years iPad and iMacs/Mac Pro will be Apples best line up of products since the 5s year. Just a pity they are taking their time to release the desktop machines.

I predict that the 2015 Macbook Pro's are soon to become hot commodities. $1800 for the 13" is a joke.

anybody "tried" adding 2 32 GB sticks yet?

The LG one is $600

There aren't any 32GB sticks that I'm aware of, they are all 16GB, but feel free to correct me if I'm wrong. The lighter machines (XPS 13, 15, etc) all have 2 sockets (32GB) and the larger machines (M7510, P50, etc) all have 4 sockets. I've added 2 x 16GB DIMMS to my XPS 15. No issue whatsoever.
