One of the worst things you could do to your battery (phone, laptop, iPad) is to constantly plug and plug it; and that's exactly what a single port does for this one.

Wonder how bad the battery will be after a year or so of use

LiIons have no memory effect. Plugging and unplugging does nothing for them. In fact they actually do best at around 80% State of Charge. The constant charging and drain has little effect on them. See Tesla for an example of this.

People seem to forget that, just because a product doesn't fit their needs, it might fit a lot of people's needs. I am a neuroscientist, so I only need Terminal to get onto my computing cluster, Illustrator, Safari, Keynote, Pages, Mail, and the anacondas python distribution for local testing of code. And I need something very light to take to talks / conferences to take notes or give a talk (most projectors have wireless now, so I had not needed an adapter). It handles all of that quite well (note that I have 8GB 1.1 GHz version). I also have a brand new 3.3GHz iMac, and, besides the obvious display size differences, I don't notice too much lag working on my MacBook compared to my iMac, even editing large paper figures in Illustrator.

The new one sounds very nice as well, and, depending on the resale value of my current one, I might upgrade.

Still just a Core M chip and still just a single USB-C port? No Thunderbolt3? For that price?

It's funny that HP managed to squeeze a Core i5/7 chip and two TB3 ports in their latest ultrabook that's even thinner than the rMB.

Oh, but you can get it in rose gold, so I guess it's fully worth it.

No idea about the UltraBook, so I'll just throw in two questions. Weight? Battery life? How much of those did HP squeeze in? Actually, make that three. Is the display retina?

It's a chipset issue. Adding proper 4K support would require the Alpine Ridge chipset, which would take up space and cut into battery life. Likely this is coming next year when Thunderbolt 3 and updated DisplayPort specs are built into the CPU.
I doubt if the GPU can actually power 4k external display at all but adding TB3 support is pretty necessary even it loses some battery life. Hey, when you have TB display connected, no need to worry about battery life at all! That is to say, if apple could design an adapter which combines the power and TB cable together into a usb-c port.

I was waiting for this update. Nothing really substantial but pretty much what I expected. No USB 3.1 Gen 2 is a bit surprising, plus shame the camera is 480p. But Skylake, better iGPU, faster RAM and an hour extra battery life, that will do nicely.

How often do you upgrade your laptop?

Yearly - I like to have the latest tech and the residual value of the old one has barely moved in that time so it makes the most sense.

My Mac mini is the oldest computer I own (late 2011 model, but is hacked to hell running something on all sata ports and a raid array via Thunderbolt for a custom 8TB fusion drive...so its not your run of the mill Mac mini) ive been dying to upgrade it for ages though, but its silly to push the button on the Mac mini at the moment as the new on will be out, the one thing it's majorly lacking is USB 3.

I just don't get why anybody would choose this over the MacBook Air. For a better screen resolution (on a smaller screen with slower graphics power) you get a machine that is slower, has less battery life, is much more limited in connectivity, and costs more. Oh, but it's thin and that's all that matters...so why not get an iPad Pro instead?

The HP weighs 30% more, has a lower resolution screen, and has 2TB-3 and 1 USB 3.1 port.

I didn't expect them to add a second USB port but I'm surprised that they didn't put in Thunderbolt 3 with the Skylake processors.
Apparently it still requires a special chipset to support Thunderbolt 3.

Nice to see a new Mac release. Rose Gold will probably look very nice at the store, not really feeling it online but that's what I said about the Rose Gold phone too and what color do I have? :p:rolleyes::p

Glad to hear about the improved battery life too. (Trying so very hard to appreciate my 27" iMac because I have to try and hold off from upgrading anything until my last semester of university.)

Will be interesting to see what the rMBPs boast when they are updated.

I have the previous generation MacBook. Guess I don't need all those other ports because I've only had to use my USB dongle one time. If you need SD, multiple USB, etc., I guess you're a MacBook Pro or Surface customer.

The biggest disappointment:

"Dual display and video mirroring: simultaneously supports full native resolution on the built-in display and up to 3840 by 2160 pixels at 30Hz on an external display, both at millions of colors"

What's the point of even advertising that it can support a 4K display if it can only do 30Hz? Might as well promote the use for 2560x1440 monitors. MacBook Pro or bust.
Maybe some seniors will remember, that "millions of colors" was the great technical advancement in the 90's. Who/why writes this stuff?

Looks good, was hoping for a price drop like they did on the second or third gem MBA, but I guess that is at least one generation away.

Underwhelming all the way around. Still stuck with two compromise devices just like we were yesterday.

My daughter is going to college this fall and wanted a Mac for graduation. I'm sure her eyes will get all shiny over the Rose Gold MacBook. I was dreaming of an updated screen for the MBA...(knew it wasn't going to happen though).
If she will be doing anything involving multi tasking I wouldn't even allow her to get this size of a laptop. My 13" macbook pros screen isn't big enough for me while attempting to study..
