Apple does not appear to be referring to the new headphones as AirPods Max 2.

AirPods Max 1.1?

USB-C is very welcome but was hoping to see a lot more from this update. Don’t think I’ll be jumping on this new model after all. Sad.

I got my lightning version when Walmart had them for $350 a couple of months ago. To my ears, they sound better than any current gen., competing headphones. No regrets.
That's great, I'm glad they work well for you. It does make me wonder how many others you sampled but if they make you happy that is all that matters. :)

Well, I've not owned the Maxes before and was holding off until they received USB-C before even considering them, and now that they have I guess I'll remain true to my word and do just that, take them into consideration. But I'm still not convinced these are worth tbh... Even for someone like me who's heavily dug into the Apple ecosystem and way of life. I mean come on I was at least hoping for an H2 chip or some tweaked improvements to the audio quality, something.

Same bad design. Do they at least have the new chip?
I honestly can't believe it but no, they're still shipping H1 chips in their most expensive headphones. I really don't know what to say, I guess they built too many of the gen 1, priced them wrong, and are now refusing to take the L?

I barely use mine, they just suck for comfort after a short amount of time, given this update I'll sell them and try out something different.

They are so heavy, and the sagging headband issue is so annoying if you've had it a few years, you can't replace that part, Apple considers it normal wear and tear.

For me, it was unusable, once the headband sagged I couldn't wear it for more than 2 hours without it getting super uncomfortable.

Switched to Sonos Ace - all day comfort.

i don't remember them making this much of a deal when they updated the airpods charging case to usb-c. They said it's now available and you can buy it for your existing airpods; and that was about it.

Apple today announced that the AirPods Max are being updated with a USB-C charging port and new color options, including Midnight, Blue, Purple, Orange, and Starlight.

In addition, Apple said the AirPods Max are gaining support for Personalized Spatial Audio with the upcoming iOS 18 software update.

The updated AirPods Max will be available to pre-order for $549 starting today, and the headphones launch on Friday, September 20.

Apple did not announce any other changes for the AirPods Max during its event.

Apple first released the AirPods Max with a Lightning port in December 2020, and the changes announced today are very minor, to the point that Apple does not appear to be referring to the new headphones as AirPods Max 2.

This is obviously Apple simply complying with the EU requirement for USB C connections by year end. A few new colors gives them something to talk about while not actually making any changes.

Couldn't they at least have changed the case?

My guess is that their will be a version 2 next year, but they had to do something to comply with EU requirements before then.

With AirPods, it was a case, not the AirPods themselves, and they could charge for it. These are $549 headphones.

No replaceable battery = nope! And can these dumb-dumb things even do lossless audio yet? The originals couldn't. What kind of headphone can't do zero-latency lossless? I'll stick with my nice headphones that have a swappable battery and can take a good ol' analogue connection.

Just criminal to charge full price for a product with a H1 chip…
Is this a joke? Years for new colours and a port update. C’mon!
This is Tim Cook's Apple, guys. People like me have been saying this for a decade, now. He's a supply-chain guy, first and foremost, and as CEO he's beholden to "shareholders". From both perspectives, he's going to be as lazy as possible, only amending SKUs when they run out of current inventory. He doesn't care about doing the right thing, he only cares about the money.

Shoots glance at Apple folding charging station that will never be updated
It is unlikely - there's no point now that Qi2 is a standard, and literally anyone can make an equivalent product.

Poorly kept secret; a lot of the Belkin adapters released at the same time as a new product are heavily based on Apple designs, which Apple decided weren't worth bringing to market. At Apple's scale, smaller product lines (like say, the entire home networking segment) are considered a distraction.
