I’m happy with my first gen APM, but it seems incredibly lame that they have fewer features than the much cheaper AirPods Pro. I still get a ton of use out of them but I was really hoping for something better here.

It's just the same old Apple AirPods Max with additional color options and a new charging port.

It’s a shame there’s no lossless audio over USB-C, and it also doesn’t support the low latency codec found on AirPods Pro (usb c) and Vision Pro.

This should've been a non-press released announcement/release that just occurred during the middle of the year. The fact that this took airtime during the Apple Event goes to show how little they had to announce.
Today's whole event was like that. Much of the time was spent summarizing and doing demos of iOS and Apple Intelligence, which we already got from WWDC. they definitely padded time to make today's event seem better than it really was.

Absolutely thrilled with this update! I do not have to upgrade my APM! As for new buyers, do NOT buy them either. Get the first generation. Still one of my favorite products I've ever owned. I do hope they get a legitimate update eventually.

Can you use a type-C to type-C cable to device for hard-wired (no latency) audio?
My question is the same. Version 1 can do it over Lightning. I have the cable for that.
There is nothing in the specifications so far. However, that does not mean anything. We have to wait. My Beats Solo 4 can do it. However, this was mentioned in the specifications. It is also analog and does not require a battery.

They just came in and said our cheapest basic AirPods have all these wonderful features with a new H2 chip that are basically AirPods Pro without tips… and come in saying our best AirPods Max have new colors and USB C! Same high price!

I just got slapped in the face
Yeah, "our best ones yet" as they say and literally the only changes made were some new colors and changing from lightning to USB-C

Innovation!

I’m hearing that they don’t. If no H2 chip, then I’m not sure why they bothered to make this refresh.
Yep, it's still using the H1 chip. Not cool.

I like my AirPods Max, but the experience of switching devices and the noise cancelation is very noticeably worse than the AirPods Pro 2s. It's not a small difference, the AirPods Pro 2 are way better. Way way better.
Oh yeah, the fact that these are using a chip pre-H2 is just a huge slap in the face to all of us, and if you have APs that do have the H2 chip, going back to these really is a noticable difference in how long it takes to change between devices with it

As for the noise cancelling, I've found them to be just as good as my AirPods Pro too, but your mileage may vary

I think the problem is that you don’t understand. Apple enormous market cap is justified by the words so and the phrase an unparalleled celebration of colour. Both are fatuous and largely a waste of time but c’mon folks I mean ai, oh look at the colours and a usb c port. It would be cheap at double the price! With the AirPods Max Apple has proven that even a 2 year release cycle is probably too short. The iPhone 16 pro max isn’t exactly super exciting either and as an Apple Watch 2 ultra owner I’m now po’d that they’ve given the Apple Watch a bigger screen than mine. A garmin fenix 8 51 mm with a google pixel phone is beginning to look enticing or perhaps I’ll just stop upgrading. Focal or Dali will get my business for wireless headphones.

No H2 for the AirPods Max is probably the biggest disappointment of the day. Maybe the second generation is coming next year and this was just a stopgap until then?
That's what I'm thinking and hoping too. Clearly we're a small minority of people that care about H2 and BT 5.3. The average user couldn't give a **** and will likely using the AP3 or APP anyways. The Max are not a high volume product for Apple.

I think they released this version, only to comply with EU laws on USB-C ports and hopefully will have a better upgrade next year, with maybe even a H3 instead of H2?

Pretty lazy updates in some respects in my opinion.

1: The flagship Apple Watch model (Ultra 2 now will have last year's S9) whereas the standard model will have this year's S10. Just doesn't make sense to me.

2: AirPods Max has been out since 2020. And the only thing Apple have done have introduced new colours and a USB C connector, but not other internal improvements.
