Absolutely wild to not at least bump to H2 chip. A flagship $550 pair of headphones should probably support the highest-end lossless audio that streams on Apple Music. Very disappointing for those awaiting a new AirPods Max, although it is still a great headphone if you are dead-set on it and don't want anything else.

This is embarrassing. They did not even upgrade to Bluetooth 5.3.
Also the fact that they switched the iPhone last year (finally) to USB-C, after neglecting their own "awesome" lightning port for it's whole existence – why did they not switch the AirPods Max to USB-C in the same event last year?

Did the engineers need more time to change a port or what? It's truly laughable. They even could've done a press release mid year to change the port. Customers were forced to buy headphones with a outdated port for a whole year to end up still needing two different cables for the lifetime of their headphones.

They just played the consumer here. Imagine you bought a iPhone last year, you also bout the AP Max, you took the toll of them having an old port, different from your phones port, because they're really good headphones after all.
And the next year Apple releases an updated version of the headphone and ALL they do is switch out the port to the one you wanted. Crazy.

I would have been fine if they changed the port last year, and I even would have been fine if they did absolutely nothing, still selling them with a lightning port (EU does allow this for products released before the deadline in 12/24). I mean, don't get me wrong a lightning port would still be silly, but the situation we are in right no is straight up outrageous.

Unfortunately the average consumer does not care / fully understand how they were fooled here.

I personally would've bought AirPods Max after release, but now I won't. I'll either wait it out for a newer generation or buy the old ones with lightning. This obviously depends on the deals we get. If 3rd party vendors can offer them almost at the same price as the old ones I'll obviously take the newer ones, but I will not pay retail for THAT. I'd rather go back to stone-age port.

I still can’t believe what I just saw about APM. They literally did nothing. Not to mention no updates to that hideous case.
yeah that comes on top... it's still that "case". But after today I am keeping my hopes low, there surely is someone at Apple who thinks that "case" is great and they will keep it for APM 2. No worries, marketing will find some nice words, they already call it a "smart-case".

I find it more shocking they didn't release a new Airpods Pro....its still on 2.

As someone that uses these 8-10 hours every single day, I don't find this that upsetting as many people here. A price reduction would have been nice sure. I honestly don't see how going from H1 to H2 is going to be a major game changer and why people demand it so much.

OK, I just need to vent.
What the hell is this!?
Four years later all that Apple has to offer is new washed out colours and a USC-C port!?
If they came out with these two years ago, it would have been a let down, but not a big deal, but this is just wrong.

This whole year has been bad for Apple. Still the only thing I am excited for this WHOLE YEAR, is built-in Window management with the next macOS. A Windows 7 feature finally built in.

AirPods Pro 2 does use the H2 though so it’s still got it all! Not a lot of room for improvement aside from perhaps some health sensors or better case with LCD screen etc

I'm actually relieved since I just got the blue Max for my birthday two days ago. I'm okay with lightning for these -- I'd prefer USB-C, but the colors don't impress me at all. The new blue is okay, but I prefer what the original sky blue.
You have a lot of posts about this. Just enjoy them.

Apple today announced that the AirPods Max are being updated with a USB-C charging port and new color options, including Midnight, Blue, Purple, Orange, and Starlight.

In addition, Apple said the AirPods Max are gaining support for Personalized Spatial Audio with the upcoming iOS 18 software update.

The updated AirPods Max will be available to pre-order for $549 starting today, and the headphones launch on Friday, September 20.

Apple did not announce any other changes for the AirPods Max during its event.

Apple first released the AirPods Max with a Lightning port in December 2020, and the changes announced today are very minor, to the point that Apple does not appear to be referring to the new headphones as AirPods Max 2.

Well that is frustrating. No real changes on a four year old product. Apple just saved me $600 ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Seriously?! That’s all Apple has to offer us? A USB C port and new colors? No other updates and nothing new?!
No new chip, better noice cancelation, better sound and new features?

Shiat, this makes me glad I purchased refurbished AirPods Max from Best Buy in August and they literally are like new and only cost $349

I was waiting for today to see if they released the APM 2 and, if so, buy a pair of them. Looks like I’ll be taking my money and buying the Dyson OnTrac headphones instead. 55 hours of battery WITH using ANC, etc. Not going to be paying more money for multi-years old headphones from Apple. Really disappointed they dropped the ball on these headphones today. I guarantee you that USB-C wouldn’t even be a ‘feature’ if it wasn’t the EU going to a USB-C mandate (which I’m totally on board with, less electronic waste and a one cord to fit them
All approach). Sorry you lost out on $500, Apple!

That's what I'm thinking and hoping too. Clearly we're a small minority of people that care about H2 and BT 5.3. The average user couldn't give a **** and will likely using the AP3 or APP anyways. The Max are not a high volume product for Apple.

I think they released this version, only to comply with EU laws on USB-C ports and hopefully will have a better upgrade next year, with maybe even a H3 instead of H2?
Yeah, I think the H3 will introduced in September 2025 with both the AirPods Pro 3 and AirPods Max 2. It probably wasn’t ready yet and Apple probably wanted to wait rather than stuff in a relatively soon to be outdated H2.

considering USB-C is the only change alongside personalised spatial audio, I'd get a discounted Lightning model. It's not like having a Lightning one will kill you.

would kill all my joy of finally getting rid of all lightning products though.

There must have been some big delay with the new model, or they could have switched to USB-C last year, when they updated the APP2 to it..
