Apple today released a new 3E751 firmware update for the second-generation AirPods and the AirPods Pro, updating them from the prior 3A283 firmware that was released back in September.

Apple does not offer information on what's included in refreshed firmware, so we don't know what improvements or bug fixes the new firmware brings.

There's no standard way to upgrade the AirPods‌ software, but firmware is generally installed over-the-air while the ‌AirPods‌ are connected to an iOS device. Putting the ‌‌‌‌AirPods‌‌‌‌ in the case, connecting the ‌‌‌‌AirPods‌‌‌‌ to a power source, and then pairing the ‌‌‌‌AirPods‌‌‌‌ to an iPhone or an iPad should force the update after a short period of time.

You can check your ‌‌AirPods‌ or ‌AirPods Pro‌‌ firmware by following these steps:
  • Connect your ‌AirPods‌ or ‌AirPods Pro‌ to your iOS device.
  • Open the Settings app.
  • Tap General.
  • Tap About.
  • Tap ‌‌‌‌AirPods‌‌‌‌.
  • Look at the number next to "Firmware Version."
If we find notable changes after the firmware updates are installed, we'll share details, but the software likely includes performance improvements and bug fixes.

Nothing changes the problem still there there is no noise cancelling and the static sound still there even if they update to new firmware still the same there is no bass too

After putting the AirPods in the case for over an hour, they were finally updated to the new firmware. Preliminary observation: automatic connection switching is faster now.

This seems more like a hardware issue than a firmware problem.

Mine (gen 2) are really problematic when it comes to connecting to my MacBook. I always have to manually connect/disconnect a couple of time before they actually connect to the mac. Does this update, along with the new Big Sur one, fix that?

The directions in this article to check firmware version in the article may be out of date. On my iPhone 12, it's:

Settings
Bluetooth
Select connected AirPods Pros
Hit the blue 'i'
See Version

First impressions: Didn't notice any real upgrade in noise cancellation. It's still not quite what it was when the AirPods Pros first released, and I'm beginning to think this is what we're stuck with.

I did notice some slight improvements to the sound stage. Listening to lossless tracks, the bass seems a bit richer and more rounded. Haven't had the chance to go back and forth between devices, so looking forward to checking that out today.

same with me.

Well for some reason by auto switching is not working. It worked before when iphone was on 14.5 beta and ipad was on 14.4.2 but now i have to manually go and swipe down to choose the airpods. It's set to auto on both devices

Has anyone actually updated to this firmware version? I just chatted with Apple and the latest version they know of is 3A283.
I have just upgraded. My problem was that settings are not remembered. Problem persists. Disappointment.

My AirPods updated to 3E751 quite quickly after putting them in the charging case and plugging in to power adaptor, unlike previous firmware updates that seemed to take several days for my own AirPods to receive.

It's so hard to evaluate any change in sound quality after the update.

I know there's heated debate (especially here!) about the AirPods Pros, but, after going through many brands and styles of wireless buds, I've always been happy with them for my purposes; the combo of size, ease of use, acoustics, and fit/comfort adds up to the a good match for me.

I kinda sorta think they sound better than they did yesterday but who can actually tell. Maybe it's the placebo "snappier" effect. Sure do wish that Apple gave a clue about the change.

I too tried everything suggested to force an update since yesterday but to no avail even today. I’m sure it’ll happen…whenever it feels like it.
Ditto. Wonder if rollout is being done by region. I’m in Canada. No love here.

My AirPods 2 still have not updated, despite me asking them politely, giving them hopeful looks, putting a cat on them, etc. As many others here, I wish Apple would just allow us to press the button to initiate the update, else it remains very random. 🤷🏻‍♂️

I have two sets of AirPods Pro, one of which I allowed to update, and just did an A/B comparison of both with the same music tracks chosen for their very different sound profiles (Stereolab’s Spark Plug and Rammstein’s Deutschland)

Overall soundstage, bass, and treble are enhanced with the new update, vs 3A283. 3A283 has a more mid-range focus with more mud in the treble.

Although I don't own 2 pairs of AP Pros I can generally agree with your assessment. I normally choose a few tracks that (for me) have a large sound stage and deep (not muddy) bass. This update is ever so slightly better than the previous.

My AirPods Pro's will not update. I have tried everything. frustrating.
Here's what usually works for me:

1. connect your AirPods to your iphone and play some sound (music podcast or something)
2. disconnect them from your ears and place them back in their case
3. connect (via lightning cable) power and leave sit for approx. 30 minutes
4. reconnect to your iPhone and check the version in settings

Assumes you are connected to a wifi network with full internet access.

Both my units updated within 5 minutes of being plugged into power using the following procedure:

1. Plug case into power.
2. Have an iOS device connected to Wi-Fi.
3. Remove pods from case and insert into ears, force connection to the specific IOS device being used (if necessary)
3. Listen to audio (music or podcast) on the iOS device for 30 seconds
4. Put pods back in case and wait 5-10 minutes.

No issues at all for me.
