I wish my AirPods Pro connected automatically to Apple TV, the same way as it does to iOS devices and Mac. Often, I'll be listening to something through Apple TV, I'll open my Mac Book pro, and they will switch. It's the same when I'm watching something on my iPad Pro and I want to check my phone. It was less frustrating when we did it manually. I hope the powers that be take care of it soon.
You can disable automatic handoff on all of your devices to go back to the old behavior.

Apple's solution to this is you getting replacements under AppleCare or buying new ones.

Your only "real" option for your dead AirPods is offered by a third party https://www.thepodswap.com I haven't tried this myself but it seems to be a decent solution.
I used them for my airpods 1 version, the process was great I highly recommend them.

I now have working airpods again. It was the best $60.00 I spent. I still like the sound of the original Airpods. I returned the AirPods Pro as the sound was too muddy with no highs. The original airpods provide better clarity and crisp highs in my music. Just my opinion.

I have the opposite problem - mine always want to connect to my iMac even when I am actively using them with my iPhone. It now just keeps popping up an "AirPods Pro are nearby" alert instead of actively switching to the iMac, so that's a plus. :)
macOS 11.3 seems to have fixed this “airpods nearby“ thing

In my case it's worse than not smooth...it barely works. When I am trying to watch or listen on my iPad, my pros connect to my phone. Yet, I can be upstairs, away from the iPad but with the phone in hand, wanting to connect to it...and they go to the iPad instead. I used to see the blue "switching" logo and now that doesn't even come up anymore, so it just doesn't work. Updating each device to 14.5 did nothing to change it!
It just works.

Try to switch to another user account on the Mac and then back to your account, AirPods aren’t even popping up in the device list anymore, need to reboot... it’s a giant mess.

I did as recommended upthread: Plugged in the case and set it by iPhone. Ten minutes later, it was updated. Be sure they're bluetooth-connected to the iPhone.

I finally got it only after rebooting the phone.

Maybe the "fit test" will go back to normal. It now tells me there is no seal in the right ear even though there does seem like a seal and I "fail" the test irrespective the size of the tip.

Was not an issue when I bought them at launch.

Mine were doing that, took them back to an Apple Store, they were replaced with a pair that have worked great since then.

Plugged in my AirPods 2 and put them right next to my phone and ate my dinner. Finished it and my AirPods were updated. I've never had a problem updating them.

Apple today released a new 3E751 firmware update for the second-generation AirPods and the AirPods Pro, updating them from the prior 3A283 firmware that was released back in September.

Apple does not offer information on what's included in refreshed firmware, so we don't know what improvements or bug fixes the new firmware brings.

There's no standard way to upgrade the AirPods‌ software, but firmware is generally installed over-the-air while the ‌AirPods‌ are connected to an iOS device. Putting the ‌‌‌‌AirPods‌‌‌‌ in the case, connecting the ‌‌‌‌AirPods‌‌‌‌ to a power source, and then pairing the ‌‌‌‌AirPods‌‌‌‌ to an iPhone or an iPad should force the update after a short period of time.

You can check your ‌‌AirPods‌ or ‌AirPods Pro‌‌ firmware by following these steps:
  • Connect your ‌AirPods‌ or ‌AirPods Pro‌ to your iOS device.
  • Open the Settings app.
  • Tap General.
  • Tap About.
  • Tap ‌‌‌‌AirPods‌‌‌‌.
  • Look at the number next to "Firmware Version."
If we find notable changes after the firmware updates are installed, we'll share details, but the software likely includes performance improvements and bug fixes.

The above mentioned, how to check firmware steps are wrong...it should be:

To check your AirPods firmware version:

  • Open the Settings app on your iPhone
  • Navigate to the “Bluetooth” menu
  • Find your AirPods in the list of devices
  • Tap the “i” next to them
  • Look at the “Firmware Version” number

It’s not necessarily wrong, it’s just a different way of doing it.

they do anything about the horrible amplified background noise any call listener can hear on phone calls? ANC is horrible for work.
