Looks like Apple has been a bit leaky as of late, nothings a surprise anymore!

Probably intentional, there is always too much speculation of the products for so long that when something is released, it's not got everything we wished for, and thats only disappointing. A bit of fact to backup a rumor is not all bad.

Be careful with importing from the US

Yes you can :)
... A friend of mine is moving over to Boston for a year in July; I already asked him to send over an iPhone. He can expect other orders from me :D

Be sure to check if the product you're buying supports 220/240 Volt. I read about issues in the past (people 'toasting' their imported US iMac Mini)

Airport Express as Ethernet Bridge

I haven't ever seen this asked, can you plug a game system (original Xbox or PS2) into it and use it as a wireless adapter? Pure curiosity, not sure if I would do it or not. Could you hook a NAS up to it via the ethernet port, this would be more like what I would do with it. A NAS and a printer, that would be really nice.

I use mine as an ethernet bridge for my ReplayTV. I would expect that this updated version can be used the same way. If so, it can be used for anything that can be hardwired to the internet.

Do we think they announced today because they have something bigger/better for tomorrow (iMac/Mini update?)

Fingers crossed!

That'd be nice - my 733 MHz G4 Power Mac is getting really long in the tooth these days. More and more lately, I'm leaning towards replacing it with a Penryn mini if/when those come out. The great thing is that I'll also be able to replace my FreeBSD PC by running it in a virtual machine on the mini, saving oodles of power (and fan noise!).

Still, I don't think that there's nearly as much of a pattern to Apple releases as many here think there is (always releasing on Tuesdays? not really). So who knows if those Mac updates will happen soon or when.

Regarding this update, I suppose it's nice if you have all new devices running 802.11n. If you have any 802.11g (or god forbid, 802.11b) devices, it sounds like there's no reason to run out and replace your existing Airport Express:
Apple said:
Speed and range will be less if an 802.11a/b/g product joins the network.
Too bad, though I kinda figured it would be this way, since that's how it is with combined 802.11g and b. For people like me, who only have one wifi device that's 802.11g (original MacBook), there's no reason to upgrade their Express. If/when we get a new MacBook with 802.11n, it sounds like it'd be smarter to run two simultaneous networks at that time - one for the faster 802.11n machine, and one for all others. Rather than replacing my existing Express, I'd just get another one.

I don't plan to have to worry about that for a while yet...

Will they ever sell a stand alone airport extreme card with 802.11n

I would love to up grade the one in my 12" powerbook G4.

Although, according to some users using "g" and "n" on the same "n" networks they still get the longer range just at "g" speeds (still plenty fast for web use).

In short, no. For one thing it isn't user replaceable. Secondly you'll only be gaining faster networking speeds (computer to computer) as "g" networks are already running faster than you internet connection (unless you have FIOS).

Well my Nintendo DS and PSP are 11b only, so, what I do is I'll keep my 11b/g access point, and get an Airport Express to run in 5ghz band for 11n device only.

You could plug in a gigabit switch into the 100Mb port, and this would still work. Your wired computers would talk at gigabit speeds amongst themselves, and at 100Mb speeds (Max - not likely to actually be this fast) over the wireless network.

Yes that would 'work', just not as optimal as it can be. 802.11n draft 2 can indeed go over 100mbps in practise... and either way, it is much better to have a wider "pipe" for several devices to send data through simultaneously. Just think of an highway with 2 lanes versus 10 lanes, provided that all cars obey the speed limit, the 2 lanes will have a congestion much sooner than the 10 lanes will get a congestion.

Wirelessly posted (iPhone: Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU like Mac OS X; en) AppleWebKit/420.1 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/3.0 Mobile/4A102 Safari/419.3)

This is cool. Glad to see the update.

oh, i see.
I have a 15" powerbook 1 gh that did not come with an extreme card, I added one recently.
I assumed that my 12" (my do everything, workhorse machine) that did come with one installed, had the same slot and I could just add the 802.11n card when it became available.
Thanks!

The AirPort card on a 12" PowerBook is user-replaceable. (It is inside the battery bay.) But Apple won't ever go back and revisit it with a wireless upgrade; they want you to buy a new Mac.

You know what, you're right! Shows how much I take my battery out  Sorry about the confusion.

But yeah, Apple won't release a card for it. They'd rather you buy a new MacBook (Air if they're lucky) instead.

Fantastic timing, I'm also sick of European prices compared to US prices.

Well, I'm just in a business trip to california and just got an MBP. I went to the Apple shop to download updates as the hotel room wireless was just too crap.

I almost bought an AE on the spot when I saw my dl going around 900Kb/s !!
Sadly, I found out that the AE was not 'n'.... until today.

I'm flying out tomorrow, hope they will be in stock in the Bay Area apple shops !

What a great way to add N to my G network.

Now, I'm starting to think about something else now:

- if I turn off wireless on my current B/G adsl modem/router
- attach to it the 1TB external HD I just bought (224 $ for a terrabyte.... geee)
- add the new airport express

will I be able to share that harddisk over wireless to backup 2 apple laptops ???

That's a poor's man time capsule I guess, but I hope it will work.

Sadly it won't work. You can only use the usb port for printing.

Clearance b/g?

Anybody know where I could get the old (802.11g) version? I can't justify spending $100 since I have a perfectly good router, but AirTunes and printer sharing would be really nice...

Anyone else think the "Airport Express in Action" graphic is totally lame? It doesn't show you any real "action." And, what's with the attempt to modernize by adding a blurb about the iPhone in the top right.

I thought it was funny.

Refurb section has been empty for a while now. Store has been out of stock for 2 weeks or more. Loads of us are waiting for clearance ($49?) Expresses. If they come on the refurb or clearance areas, they will go fast.

I do not see why not, I have been doing it with the previous version with a number of TiVos and a Buffalo NAS unit for several years. I even use it to access a temperature control system for a BBQ smoker.

Yeah.. That was what I thought... They must have something big tomorrow which would leave the new AE 802.11N in shadows..

BTW, why havent AE made the front page yet? I'm not expecting it to replace the iPhone SDK banner, but c'mon Apple, still "American Idol"??
