If I were a conspiracy theorist, I'd assume it was because they ended up scrapping an announcement about a special-edition band-themed iPod nano. But for the life of me, I can't think of a band that sings about anything yellow...

My pragmatic side thinks they forgot to turn the "Apple Exclusive" layer off in Photoshop when they were saving the yellow nano image file.

Doesn't Coldplay have a song about yellow? Hmmm...

What has the ipod team been doing for the past year? Putting a awful camera into the nano? This is what happens when Jobs leaves for 6 months, everybody gets lazy and apple releases less than par products.

No Camera on iPod Touch!?

Apple, I will buy 2 iPod Touches if you add a camera and mic! I have been waiting for it like a year! Why didn't you add a camera to Touch?

I even have saved money for 2 iPod Touches! OMG! I am not gonna buy the Nano. I don't need the iPhone!

Lame...I am pissed...

if they're making $2.5bn revenue from the app store each year, they need as many devcies out there buying stuff. That includes ipod touches. Ideally you have one common platform, which means camera, GPS, compass in the touch. Ideally microphone in the main unit, not the headphones, but thats ok.

And its not just for taking photos, I know we all have cameras yadda yadda. Its about the other apps you can use with the camera as well. augmented reality with the GPS/compass/camera, barcode scanners, twitpiccing etc.

Not everyone wants to, or can, switch to an iphone. They're either in a contract for a while, happy in their contract, or can't easily switch (eg work supplied phone or want to stay on a particular network)

...or in an area where AT&T has no coverage.

If Apple really wants to "phase out" the iPods to encourage people to get the iPhone, and in doing so giving other mp3 manufacturers a HUGE advantage by not offering mp3 players, then fine. I don't care. A slim little 16GB Zune will do me just fine.

Honestly, I don't think Apple would ever do that, but hey, I'm just saying..

I just love how so many of you are pretending that the lack of a camera in the iPod Touch is a dealbreaker and you are completely dismissing the big storage upgrades. If Apple had put the camera in the iPod Touch, big storage upgrade, bluetooth and FM radio you would've still said it was a lackluster upgrade and said, "I'm pissed, Apple was gonna get my money today until I noticed that they did nothing to the iPod Touch". Get real. :p
The 2G iPod Touch owners have no reason to upgrade right now so why are you all the most upset here? If someone doesn't own an iPod Touch this is a great buy for them. Too many of you geeks here think you're the only customers Apple has and needs to please.

Unlocked but fully supported iPhone 3GS really is what people are after, not a new Touch. ;)

Well, I also think there's plenty of folks out there who want a GPS capable itouch with camera & microphone, and would be willing to pay a bit extra for that.

I don't really care since I have my iPhone, but it's kinda funny they'd put only a video recorder in the nano and not still picture.

All of this Apple fanboy complaining is ridiculous. You all read RUMORS and think "OMG AWESOME!! TOUCH UPDATES! CAMERAS!! VIDEO CAMERAS!!! A TABLET!! I AM SOOOOO EXCITED!!"

It's a rumor site, chill the f out with your rabid disappointment because the Touch doesn't have a camera. You're all acting like a 3rd grader who didn't get the G.I. Joe they wanted for Christmas.

Yes, and I think it's rather funny that Apple has put a video camera in the nano with absolutely no on-board app for editing video.

That's the IDEA. If you put in an FM radio and a video camera into an iPhone minus the phone, you get a very powerful device. Post to youtube, Twitter, etc immediately? Come on. Apple doesn't want that. Thus it puts the nano in its sandbox and gives it features. It's only useful if you connect your Nano to your computer and extract the recorded video. otherwise it's just meh... Like a dumbphone you know? Give a dumbphone a camera? Okay... Give a smartphone a camera? Wow. Why do you think people post facebook pics, tweet, etc using their smartphones with pictures videos, etc? The dumbphone is useless in this arena.

I think it's interesting to note that with this update to the Classic, it's really at EOL status. Unless they make it as appealing as the Nano, I see the line going nowhere. The Nano was always a slim down version of the bigger iPod. Now it's being touted as mainstream. The iPod was ALWAYS that big clunky white thing with the hard drive inside. Now it's being defined by the Nano with all these silly girls carrying them, and somewhat by the touch. WHAT HAPPENED to the classic? It's not as useful, but honestly, if you want to keep it alive, at least breathe some life into it.

WRONG. There are many folks that wanted exactly what you described and would have paid more for it. The nanos with the crappy cameras (that can't even take still pictures, lol) are what Apple has focused on?!

You get real. Apple lost out on a big market here.

I can't wait for the maelstrom that will strike these boards when everyone discovers that the tablet rumors were just that: rumors. :D:D:D

Well written +1

Dear me...

I don't know what everyone's whining about...

If you haven't got an iPhone but you do have a mobile phone of some other make, the chances are you've already got a phone with a camera on it anyway but it's really bad at being an MP3 player. Therefore an iPod Touch is what you need to make up the difference.

If you have/want an iPod Touch for its gaming abilities then you're almost certainly going to need another mobile phone anyway which is going to have a camera regardless.

If you've got an iPhone then you've got everything you need unless your music collection is vast, in which case you need the extra memory if a second iPod but not an extra camera.

If you're too young for a mobile phone but want to play music and take pictures, then there's an iPod for you too now.

Yes, I think that these new products from Apple don't exactly merit partying in the streets - they're very definitely only a mild evolution of what we already had, but equally I don't think Apple deserves to be castigated either. It seems like a logical range for the various types of market that wants to buy Apple kit.

Nobody who wants one or needs one is going to be lacking a camera simply because of the makeup of Apple's latest iPod range.

I agree... I've had a 2G iTouch for quite a while now, and I'm kind of glad that I still actually have a tech product that is not out of date.

I can often fall into the same trap as many people and want to have the latest and greatest, but I sometimes have to step back and remember that by having a cheap cell phone and an iTouch, I don't pay for a data plan and still have a great portable device for music, WiFi, and apps.

But I gotta say, Apple has given me no real reason to make an upgrade. It's kind of a catch 22: I buy a product that I really like, but it is so good that I have little need to upgrade and pay Apple more money until they find something else that blows me away.

Phew....

Back in the "Mac with Free Touch" promotion.... I got a new macbook pro + ipod touch and sold the touch to my cousin for a 40% discount. Lucky it didn't get new camera today, or she'd have been pissed.

If I was anyone else, though, I would be anything but impressed with Apple's most recent ipod updates.

The nano with camera and the stainless shuffle is okay cool, but the rest of it wasn't really newsworthy; Apple bumps up memory and hard disk space in its macintosh lines all the time without barely a mention.

p.s I'm also quite happy my 16gb ipod touch isn't too outdated yet, so no need to shell out money for another one. =D But I would be selling my apple stock soon (especially since it practically doubled in the past 6 months); What with apple's ipod lines looking like on the cusp of stagnation and steve jobs getting old, etc.

disclaimer: There is no financial advice in this post.

I'm confused. Why didn't the Touch get a camera? I mean the Nano update is pretty slick but why would the Touch be left out?

How do you think Apple will sell you another Touch next time they update? That's right they will include a camera! Apple knows what they are doing to keep people buying.

No 16GB iPod Touch

First, it is and iPod Touch, not iTouch. I will say that over and over again until people get it.

I think the real reason there is not 16GB version right now is because they are still trying to purge old 8GB versions. Once these are gone, I think the default $199 iPod Touch will be a revised 16GB version with faster processors etc. This will bring their entry level model in under the Zune HD entry model. If I'm wrong, I think their price breaks are retarded given Zune HD's entry into the market. Also, if I'm wrong, I think they are missing a big chance to make the Zune HD stillborn.

Oh, and I realize this will piss off a lot of people who buy the current 8GB at that price, only to be pooped on, but perhaps they really do have these kind of quantities already produced, and don't want to take a hit at something like $150.

Did Steve approve this retouching?

The fingernails on those thumbs holding the new iPod touch on Apple's Home page are a little too heavily retouched, methinks. :D

It's interesting that how the Apple rumor site like MacRumors, and so-called "analysts" created all the hypes about the "new" features to come on the new iPod Touch, but when those rumor didn't materialize, everyone turn on Apple instead. Apple never officially announced anything prior to the introduction of the new models, but we somehow think the speculation from all the news sources are facts, and when our expectation didn't meet, we all become enraged.

I admit I'm a little disappointed with the fact that the new iPod Touch didn't get a camera, but I'm not holding that against Apple. They never said it would have a camera.

It's all about the iPhone and the App Store.

The iPod is now just a cheaper way to get to the App Store.

Otherwise, the iPhone is the future. It's all about full device convergence. You don't have to believe me, just follow the trends. That's the direction in which everyone is trying to move (with varying degrees of success.) Apple has already positioned the iPhone as *the* handheld to end all handhelds - whether smartphones or mediaplayers. Apple's recent price cuts to the iPhone just underscore their intention. Once it hits even more carriers, there's no stopping it, and it'll be even more affordable. Android is suffering (quite badly) at the hands of the iPhone (as I was told by a middle-manager for Rogers GTA marketing in Toronto.) The iPhone is already #1 in Japan. WinMo is sliding down the tubes. RIM is trying to keep up. Nokia is busy copying. Motorola has some tough decisions to make. And Palm is barely in the game so far, despute their best efforts. But the iPhone didn't just change the mobile indsutry overnight, it changed the handheld industry as well.

And most importantly, everyone is learning from AT&T's successes and mistakes. We're slowly getting to a point now, where if a carrier wants to do well and attract customers, it MUST carry the iPhone. Everyone wants in.

If Apple were to introduce a tablet in the next year, and if it's going to be the game-changer people think (always bet on Apple!), then you'll see the complete death of the stand-alone phoneless mediaplayer market. It's already dying gradually thanks to the paradigm-shift the iPhone caused.

App Store + iPhone (+ Tablet.) This is the future.

For me it is pretty simple. If the new iPod Touch would have had a camera/video I would have purchased one. I have a iPhone 3G right now and I'm not in a good window to upgrade to a 3Gs, but I would really like the video features and even developing some applications using it - so it would be nice to have something supporting those features. I figured I would get a new Touch then next year get a new iPhone and pass the Touch on to a family member. But since it does not have a significant feature for me over my current iPhone 3G, it doesn't make any sense to do that.

So like many others - no sale.

It seems odd...

It seems odd to me that people get upset because a single-generation bump in spec doesn't give them enough of a reason to ditch their old model to buy the new one...

Single generation spec bumps were never meant for that - they were to encourage NEW purchasers in and to get people holding models two or more generations back to upgrade.

I have a 3G iPhone. The 3GS is not enough of a reason for me to upgrade. I dare say it will only be the NEXT iPhone, whenever it comes, or possibly even the one after that will be the impetus for me to upgrade. As it stands the 3GS simply doesn't represent enough of a difference to what I have now. The same logic applies to anything else produced by Apple - or any other manufacturer for that matter.

Apple's products evolve like all others. It's very rare to get a quantum leap for each generation.

Classic Apple (non) Event

I live on the other side of the world (Thailand) and I stayed up very late into the night to monitor this event. In my sleep deprived state I couldn't really believe what had just happened and went to sleep.

Now is the morning for me and I still don't believe it.

Why have an event for minor upgrades, that have already been leaked anyway?

OK, I get the point, Steve is still alive and he is still in charge (is that a good thing?).

I would sure love to be a fly on the wall and find out what is really going on.

Am I the only one who still loves a Classic?

Love em, love em, love em. I have a Classic for "normal" use, a 1G nano for the gym and a 3G iPhone for ... a phone. I'm thrilled with that lineup.

I like Apple.

ps: I won't be buying anything introduced today. No need.

You're definitely not the only one who likes the Classic! I recently got an Apple-refurbed 160GB Classic in silver to keep the black one company. One is for operas and classical music, the other for everything else. I like to have the Classics with me when I am travelling without a computer. Everything my ears might long for in a couple of little boxes.

I am glad they're bringing back the larger size in their new release of the Classic. By now there must be a lot of people with large audio collections who don't want to have to do manual syncs to fit their stuff onto smaller iPods. The novelty of making the picks does wear off!

The nano intro'd today is very intriguing but I haven't ordered one yet. I want to see how long I can resist. I figure... Friday? But only if I decide not to get the 64GB iPod touch. I might do that instead of trying the new nano. Decisions, decisions... I love my 32GB iPod touch, it's my favorite for design and utility along with the 2nd gen nano. The Classic I like just for the spaciousness, and the way it looks in the speakerdock. My shuffles I like for always having one in my purse and for wearing around the house doing chores, but I admit to not having tried the latest gen yet. I like the controls on the device, not a fan of messing about with the cord.

Absence of a camera on the iPod touch does not bother me in the least even if I may have said I'd like the feature. There's a cam in my iPhone and in both of the other cell phones I sometimes carry instead. Last time I used any of them was to take a picture of a hailstone-hole in a maple leaf outside my kitchen window in June or July, so how hot could I say I was for any camera anyway.
