They've done it for years. Spec updates do not need events, what would they show off? T\.
Their timing is always problematic. We just upgraded our college labs to the "new" iMacs in August. Mainly, we needed better graphics chips (from our original 128 mb iMacs). I wish Apple had a summer upgrade cycle so that we could get the newer machines for the start of the semester. The iMacs we purchased have 512 mb. Now 1 gb seems to be standard, along with 8 gb of RAM. By the time we can afford to upgrade the labs again, we'll probably once again end up behind the curve....
Edit: Whoa! Finally a 1 tb SSD option -- for an additional $1000.
Performance wise its more like a decent laptop. Wouldn't call it a 'gaming' monster.
I guess this explains why the iMac I ordered 2 weeks ago still hasn't come in!![]()
Don't think that'll happen, Apple has been moving products away from discrete graphics not towards them.
Would you buy one with a Retina Display for 2x the cost?

No one said the iMac screen looked bad. Just that a retina one would look better. There was nothing wrong with my 1680 x 1050 Macbook Pro screen, but my 2880 x 1800 one looks a hell of a lot better.Perhaps you should buy some glasses so you can stop sitting 9 inches away from your desktop computers. For those of us that sit up straight in our chairs the iMac screens look amazing.
The bottom line is, while an eventual retina-iMac will look great, if that's your criteria you're going to be computer-less for at least 2 or 3 more years. Is that really the best way to live your life?
I think that's a pretty simplistic statement. They put discrete graphics in devices when it makes sense. Pro models, and/or products that have the space inside them to fit discrete graphics get them. Integrated graphics usually happen when the form factor and/or price of the product can't support discrete.
The MBA is an example. Given it's popularity with professional users, and the issues around the original Intel graphics I can guarantee Apple would have put discrete in there at least as an option if they could have figured out a way to reliably cram them in.
