Holiday shopping season is 1000 times more important than the start of a "semester."

Agreed. But if Apple wants to have greater adoption in higher education (as they sort of half-heartedly claim), they should either give us a clearer roadmap so we know when to adopt, or accommodate our rather rigid purchasing schedule.

Maybe this actually wasn't that big of an upgrade that it was worthy of screen time during a keynote. Still, the fact that they only announced this in a press release leaves me confident they have a lot of things for the october event. Obviously too much for the iMac to fit in. :)

it wouldn't be 2x the cost... when they launched macbook pro with Retina Display wasn't 2x the cost.... When they launched iPhones with Retina Displays it wasn't 2x the cost.

Neither of those had a 27" screen. I'm sure that as soon as they can get the yields up enough on large screens to make them financially practical they'll be shipping Retina on the iMac.

Trust me. Phil Schiller wants nothing more than to gaze into your eyes and tell you that theirs is the highest resolution desktop display in the world. But it does no good to make that proclamation if only 5 people are going to buy it.

The Fusion Drive option is $50 less which is good and the SSD options are a tad different. This basically lines up with what I expected in the update.

The one question I have is the 780M the same specs as other 780Ms or did Apple get a slightly faster version?

i think is the base specs of the 780M but with 4GB vRAM....
so with maveriks and 780M i think a 20% better performance than 680MX with Mountain Lion...so yea it is worth it

I don't get it...

...what is it with this fascination for Retina displays on iMacs? I'm typing this on mine and I'm 12 inches away from the screen. I'm a designer, I have to do close-up stuff and as I see it, a Retina is just way over the top - I can easily do without it. It's like people who want to print advertising hoardings at 300dpi when they're going to me tens of feet away from them to read them properly. I'm in for one NOW! Now where's that "Take My Money!" Meme?

Don't think that'll happen, Apple has been moving products away from discrete graphics not towards them.

Sadly, you are correct. Though a BTO option would satisfy both groups. But even in the Mini subforum, there are folks who BLAST anyone asking for a dGPU as a BTO option. smh

Now I really wish I didn't get so caught up in the wait last year, these seem to be pretty big update over the older ones, particularly in terms of graphics.

Retina monitor

Amazing to think the the first 4K monitor came out in 2001 - IBM T220. 9 megapixels. (I think it was the first). Needed a serious video card setup.

Their timing is always problematic. We just upgraded our college labs to the "new" iMacs in August. Mainly, we needed better graphics chips (from our original 128 mb iMacs). I wish Apple had a summer upgrade cycle so that we could get the newer machines for the start of the semester. The iMacs we purchased have 512 mb. Now 1 gb seems to be standard, along with 8 gb of RAM. By the time we can afford to upgrade the labs again, we'll probably once again end up behind the curve....

Edit: Whoa! Finally a 1 tb SSD option -- for an additional $1000.

Just done the same here, 85 brand new iMacs only they are not the latest now, 1 week after term starts hahaha.

I said this before and I will say it again. Even though I like the new case design I wished that Apple applied it to Haswell last June 2013 rather than delay Ivy Bridge by over 7 months in 2012.

I say this because it was announced in November 2012 but I took delivery in February 2013.

I'm just annoyed by it. :(

On a side note I find it odd that this came before the Mac Pro, MBPro, iPad, iPad mini, Retina MBPro, Mac mini and Apple TV.

Is it me, or does Apple just really love Tuesdays? Why is that?

Pretty good, nice surprise. At this point they should've reduced the size of the iMac or get that screen bigger to reduce the black bezel. Time to go edge to edge!

Does anyone else think that if they are putting in "decent" mobile dGPUs in the iMac (consumer mac) that this may bode well for the rMPB to get a dGPU as well? I can't fathom Apple selling a 2K plus machine with just Iris Pro when their base iMac has Iris Pro. Thoughts?

I guess the upcoming low-end 13" rMBP would have the same graphics as the new low-end 21" iMac, i.e. the Iris Pro graphics. The justification for the 2K+ price-tag is the retina display and portability.

Does anyone know if Iris Pro graphics (HD 5200??) is better than Nvidia 640m/650m (as in previous 21" iMac) or not?

By themselves (Haswell, 780M, PCIe based SSD for the Fusion Drive) weren't worth waiting for, as a package of all 3, it is quite worth it.

...
Exactly. And as a reminder, the PPI of an iMac is 90% of what it needs to be to fall under the retina definition anyway.

Just hoping they include 16GB of RAM on the 13" retina MBP as well.
At least, as an option. Oh, and 256GB PCIe SSD. And the Iris Pro.

Can't wait to see new rMBPs :D

You're always behind the curve with technology. Just buy what you need when you need it.

Quick. Cancel it and order another with the updated processors and cheaper upgrades. And be happy you got in under the wire.

Already done. I just really needed a computer 2 weeks ago! It's for my secretary's desk. Performance and latest tech. isn't necessary here.

nobody noticed the 27inch 'high end' model comes with nvidia 775m by default??? and 4gb 780m?

woah...

it's gonna be a gaming monster =]

im wondering why it's not overclocked mx models like the previous 680mx.
This is just a spec bump. The 780 is an improvement over the 680MX and it uses less power too. It's possible they have overclocked it, as well.

I'm eyeing the 27 inch w/ GTX 780M. The 775M isn't good enough at all for 1440p imo.

Talk about a stealth update! Not even so much as a "New" or "Updated" badge showing up on the online store.

I guess for a desktop, the Haswell update is a pretty minor spec bump.

I love suprises like this with little to no rumors to give it away.

32GB option is nice.. was this offered before?
